Two people were killed and a number of others injured on 26 March (15) when a blast, believed to have been caused by a gas leak, sparked a fire which tore through two residential buildings in Manhattan's East Village.

The Sopranos actress Drea de Matteo was among those who lost their home in the disaster, and a fundraising concert has been scheduled for Sunday (12Apr15) to bring in money for the GOLES (Good Old Lower East Side) foundation, which is helping those affected.

Smith, who has a longtime association with the area, has now been confirmed as the headline act.

Novelist Alan Kaufman, who is among the organisers of the show at the Theatre 80 venue, tells New York Post gossip column Page Six, "In a sense, she (Smith) is the emblematic icon of the East Village, its presiding eminence, but the real headliner of this show is the East Village itself."

Other acts confirmed for the line-up include musician Dev Hynes, also known as Blood Orange, who lost his own apartment in a fire in 2013, actor Penn Badgley's band Mothxr, and the Village People star Randy Jones, who will host the event.
