Very Good

From Spain, this drama grapples with some enormous issues without getting too heavy about them. It's emotionally wrenching without ever feeling sentimental, because inventive filmmaker Julio Medem (Sex & Lucia) keeps the tone funny and full of life. He also gets sparkling performances from Penelope Cruz and Luis Tosar, who keep the movie bright and hopeful even as the characters face mortality and death.

Cruz plays Magda, a feisty woman who turns all of her energy toward her lively teen son Dani (Teo Planell) after ditching her womanising husband Raul (Alex Brendemuhl). Dani is a star player on his school football team, attracting the attention of top scout Arturo (Tosar), whose life is shaken to the core when his daughter is killed in a car crash that leaves his wife in a coma. Secretly, Magda has been dealing with issues of her own, going through treatment for advanced breast cancer with her attentive doctor Julian (Asier Etxeandia). When things get more serious, she sends Dani away to stay with his aunt (Monica Sagrera). And while he's away, she and Arturo help each other through their darkest moments.

The film is a rollercoaster of emotions, from soaring happiness to deep despair, and Medem's approach is so honest that this never feels jarring. It's a look at the resilience of the human spirit, which can remain optimistic even when things get tough. Using dry humour and truthful emotions, he explores the importance of choosing joy, seamlessly mixing comedy and tragedy while refusing to let this become a traditional weepy drama. Within this open-handed approach, Cruz shines as a radiant woman who faces life head-on. Her interaction with each of the other characters is complex and engaging, especially in the surprising journey Magda takes with Arturo. Tosar is excellent, as always, with equally layered side roles beautifully played by Planell and Exteandia.

Grimsby Review

OK

Although it contains some memorably outrageous comedy moments, this movie (retitled The Brothers Grimsby for North America) is such an awkward combination of gross-out humour, violent action and sappy sentimentality that it never becomes a classic. Sacha Baron Cohen creates yet another lively alter ego as lager lout Noddy, although he isn't nearly as fully formed as the indelible Ali G, Borat and Bruno.

Noddy Butcher lives in Grimsby, northeast England, with his girlfriend (Rebel Wilson) and 9 or maybe 11 kids. His main passions in life are football and beer, then he learns that his long-lost brother Sebastian (Mark Strong) is alive and working as a super-spy. So Noddy heads to London and crashes Sebastian's latest mission, protecting a model-turned-philanthropist (Penelope Cruz). In the havoc, the brothers end up on the run trying to both clear their names and prevent an impending terror attack. This takes them to South Africa and Chile, as they're pursued by both a villainous thug (Scott Adkins) and a ruthless assassin (Sam Hazeldine) hired by Sebastian's boss (Ian McShane). Along the way, they're assisted by Sebastian's love-lorn colleague (Isla Fisher), locals (including Gabourey Sidibe and Barkhad Abdi) and the gang from Nobby's hometown pub.

The script merrily pushes the boundaries of taste, often with riotous vulgarity. Some of this is so jaw-dropping that it's funny (an unforgettable scene involving a herd of elephants), while other jokes are harder to take (a running gag about HIV infection). Most of the humour centres squarely on male genitalia and anal insertion, which gives the film an oddly homophobic undercurrent that will only amuse the drunken yobs in the audience. More interesting is the wildly astute pastiche of Britain's perceived benefits fraud subculture. But director Louis Leterrier (The Transporter) seems uninterested in this, instead focussing on intensely brutal action, which results in an unusually high body count for a comedy.

Zoolander 2 Review

Good

With virtually the same blend of wit and idiocy as the 2001 original, this fashion-scene comedy is funny enough to spark some solid laughter in between the gags that fall flat. The punchlines are simple and the characters paper thin, but this world is so ripe for parody that the rather awkward mix of in-jokes and satire can't help but hit the bullseye every now and then.

Things haven't been great for top supermodel Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) over the past 15 years. His reading school collapsed in tragedy, sending him to live as a "hermit crab" in the wilds of northern New Jersey. And with a facial injury, his cohort Hansel (Owen Wilson) has retired in the wasteland of Malibu. Then Italian designer Atoz (Kristen Wiig) summons them to Rome, just as Interpol agent Valentina (Penelope Cruz) is investigating a series of popstar murders that seem linked to Derek's past. Teaming up with Valentina, Derek and Hansel track down their old nemesis Mugatu (Will Ferrell), reconnect with Derek's long-lost son (Cyrus Arnold) and discover a sinister conspiracy.

Stiller directs the film as if it's the next instalment in the Da Vinci Code saga, complete with shadowy secret rituals and ominous chase sequences. But the dialogue remains utterly ludicrous, as this "ridiculously good-looking" duo go through their individual existential crises, clueless that the world has moved on without them. Stiller and Wilson reprise the hang-dog charm that made the characters so likeable the first time round. Although this time Derek gets some emotional depth, while Hansel plays the action hero. Ferrell and Wiig camp it up to the rafters in their colourful roles, while Cruz vamps through the film in bombshell love-interest mode. Her deadpan performance might actually be the funniest thing in the movie. And each scene is packed with big-star cameos, some of which are genuinely amusing.

Non-White Ethnic Groups Dangerously Under/Misepresented In Hollywood

Penelope Cruz Chiwetel Ejiofor

A study has found that non-white ethnic groups were severely underrepresented in Hollywood in 2013, indicating deep-seated issues regarding inclusion and equality at the heart of the movie industry.

12 Years a Slave'12 Years a Slave' - an Oscar winner with a predominantly black cast. But Hollywood is still far, far behind

The study found that, while America’s population includes a large Hispanic population – more than 16% - only 4.9% played speaking parts in blockbuster movies from 2013. Black actors were cast in 14.1% of roles and 17% of films had no black speaking characters.

Despite A Great Cast, 'The Counselor' Gets Lost In A Crazed Mess Of A Script

Ridley Scott Michael Fassbender Brad Pitt Javier Bardem Cameron Diaz Penelope Cruz

The Counselor is the latest film from No Country for Old Men writer Cormac McCarthy, making his screenwriting debut alongside director Ridley Scott, with a film that explores the complexities of hustling, and the fact that no matter how big a shark you think you are, there's always a bigger one swimming nearby.

The Counselor
Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender make up part of an impressive cast

The premise and the names attached tot he film all looked as though they fit into place, and The Counselor seemed to be the latest hot Oscar contender, however, upon closer inspection it looks as though the pieces were too big after all, and the film looks unlikely to stand up to expectation.

The Counsellor is a clever new thriller from the creative mind of Sir Ridley Scott and screenwriter Cormac McCarthy, in which a lawyer (Michael Fassbender) decides to try and make a little extra money on the side by selling cocaine. Over the course of the film, he learns that there is no such thing as easy money, especially not in the drug trade, as he begins to meet and mix with some unsavoury character (even worse than lawyers, we're led to believe) and has to work out who his real friends are in this new, powdery life, that's if he even has any in the first place.

Spanish actress Cruz and her husband actor Javier Bardem welcomed a little girl into the world on Monday 22nd July in Madrid, reports Spanish magazine Hola.

The Lone Ranger Bombs At Cinemas, But How Does It Compare To The Worst Box Office Bombs?

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer Ron Howard Brian Grazer Eddie Murphy Matthew Mcconaughey Steve Zahn Penelope Cruz

Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp back together in another swashbuckling adventure, what could possibly go wrong? Unfortunately for Disney, a lot did go wrong with The Lone Ranger; no one was interested in a big screen version of a 1930s radio series. Johnny Depp is starting to lose his box office appeal and, ultimately, it was terrible. But hey, at least there's worse film right?

Lone Ranger
The Lone Ranger probably wont make it into the top five

The film isn't out of cinemas yet, so we can't really say how much it will lose (who knows, it might have the best week three in cinema history), but we can assume it will sit nicely next to Disney's last big box office flop: 2012's John Carter. Speaking of John Carter, when it comes to the top box office flops, the confused martian adventure doesn't even break into the top ten. Here's the five worst performing films of all time.

Is 'The Counselor' Set For The Oscars? [Trailer]

Ridley Scott Brad Pitt Penelope Cruz Cameron Diaz Javier Bardem Michael Fassbender Sylvester Stallone Robert De Niro

The trailer for Ridley Scott's upcoming gritty thriller The Counselor dropped yesterday, after the initial teaser was circulated in cryptic Russian. With a November release date, there's certainly enough time to build up anticipation for the film, which is written by No Country For Old Men screenwriter, Cormac McCarthy.

Michael FassbenderMichael Fassbender Filming A Scene From The Counselor

There may be added logic to the late-2013 release date however: to give itself the best chances for 2014 Oscars consideration. The Counselor stars Michael Fassbender (Shame, Prometheus) who plays a lawyer who gets involved in cocaine trafficking and ends up in over his head with the wrong people. According to First Showing, Fassbender teams up in business with a rich acquaintance, played by Bardem, as Pitt's shady criminal character comes out of the shadows as things take a turn for the worst. In an incredible cast, Fassbender's co-stars include Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.Despite their cinematic fame and success, neither Scott nor Pitt have ever won an Oscar before, with Pitt apparently resigning himself to never winning, having said: "I don't play the Oscars game." November release dates tend to be awards friendly, due to being late enough to not be forgotten amongst the year's other cinematic releases but not too late as to have not made enough of an impression.

Could Penelope Cruz Be The Next Bond Girl?

Penelope Cruz Daniel Craig James Bond

Rumours are circulating that Penelope Cruz could become the Bond girl for the franchise’s 24th outing. If she does, she’ll become the oldest ever woman to play the iconic character of Bond girl at 40-years-young.

"The producers have tried to get Penelope before, but she has never been available because of other commitments. The discussions have been going on for some time and they are working out the contract details now,” a source told The Daily Mail. It’s likely that Sam Mendes – who has reportedly signed on for another Bond film after initial doubts – met Cruz while working with her husband Javier Bardem on Skyfall. "She got back into shape fast after the first baby and will no doubt regain her figure quickly this time. She'll be a great Bond girl,” added the source. "Bond girls are always brainy as well as sexy, and that's totally Penelope."

Skyfall has become the most-successful Bond film ever - grossing more than $1bn and becoming the eighth-biggest box office hit of all time. One person who definitely will be returning for Bond #24 is Daniel Craig, who has signed up for #25, too. That’ll make it 5 Bonds for the British hunk, who said he might not even play the British spy in Skyfall. Idris Elba was mooted as possible replacement, and he’d make a brilliant Bond, but he’ll have to wait his turn now. And it could be a while.

I'm So Excited! [Los Amantes Pasajeros] Review

Very Good

Fans of more recent Almodovar films like The Skin I Live In or Volver should be warned about this one, because it harks back to his much cheesier 1980s films with its broad comedy, lurid production values and camp characters. But even if it looks fluffy and silly, there are some serious things going on under the surface, as Almodovar undermines stereotypes and plays with sexuality issues. Although this means that most of the humour is aimed at a gay audience.

It all takes place on a flight from Spain to Mexico, but shortly after take-off the pilot (de la Torre) announces that a mechanical fault means they need to make an emergency landing. Then the passenger Bruna (Duenas) reveals that she's a virginal psychic who sees death ahead, and everyone starts to panic. The flight crew (Camara, Areces and Arevalo) try to distract the passengers from impending doom by performing a choreographed number to the Pointer Sisters' eponymous hit. And when that doesn't work, they lace everyone's drinks with mescaline.

Each person in the first class cabin (economy is sound asleep) has his or her own crisis, including a notorious dominatrix (Roth), a businessman (Torrijo) on a quest, a shady hitman (Yazpik), a just-married groom (Silvestre) who prefers his wife to be asleep, and a man (Toledo) running from his suicidal girlfriend (Vega). And the pilots and flight attendants are also romantically entangled. All of this swirls together like a nutty 1970s Mexican soap, complete with flimsy-looking sets and a sparky mariachi score.

Bigas Luna Dies: Proteges Javier Bardem And Penelope Cruz Lead Tributes To Late Director

Penelope Cruz Javier Bardem

The Spanish director Josep Joan Bigas Luna, who can count Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz among his acting discoveries, has died at the premature age of 67.

The BBC reports that Bigas Luna died after a long battle with cancer at his home in Tarragona, northeast Spain. One of the biggest influential film makers in the country, he also had an eye for talent – Javier Bardem’s first role was in Bigas Luna’s 1990 film The Ages Of Lulu. "I don't know where to begin," Bardem said in a statement, adding that he owed the director "the woman I love" and "a career that I never dreamed I could have". Cruz also went for a role in The Ages Of Lulu and though she didn’t get the role, her first meeting with the director apparently changed her life. "In walked a man with a rascal's face: Bigas Luna," she said in her own statement "The first thing he asked me was my age [she was 14]. I said I was 17 and he, always very gently and without making me feel too bad, laughed in my face and said: `Well, you won't make this movie, but I'll call for another when you're older."'

True enough he did get in touch with her three years later, to star in Jamon, Jamon alongside Bardem. It was the first time the pair met and they went on to get married. Both have starred in Bigas Luna films since as well, with Barden appearing in 1993's Golden Balls and 1994's Le teta y la luna and Cruz in 1999’s Volaverunt, before going on to win a best supporting Oscar in 2009 for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Penelope Cruz Pregnant; Second Bambino On The Way

Penelope Cruz Javier Bardem

Hollywood's Spanish dream team are expecting their second bambino, is has been announced. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are to give birth another baby, according to US Weekly.

A source also told E! that the "Volver" actress was "around three months" pregnant. It's clear, from an interview with Vogue in 2011, that Cruz relishes motherhood. "From the first second, you feel so much love," she explained in the June edition of the fashion magazine. "It is a revolutionary experience. That's the best way I can describe it. It transforms you completely, in a second. Nature is very wise and gives you nine months to prepare, but in that moment, when you see that face, you are transformed forever."

It's going to a busy year ahead for the Cruz clan, with Penelope's sister Monica also expecting. The Agent Provocateur model and mom-to-be, 35, announced the news in a post titled "My Life's Dream" earlier this month. "I'm going to be a mother!" she wrote in Spanish. "I have managed to fulfill the dream of a lifetime. Because of that, I want to share with all of you this special journey and be able to tell you about all of my experiences during this fascinating time..."
