Disney's 'Frozen' has been doing pretty well at the box office, could all that be about to change?
Disney's new animated musical, Frozen has had a merry time at the top of the box office, charming both small children, parents and critics alike across the Thanksgiving weekend and rustling up some genuine Oscars talk at the start of the awards season.
'Frozen' Has Charmed Its Way Up The Box Office Rankings, For How Much Longer Though?
The sweet and festive kids' movie managed to topple the former box office leviathan, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, from the top perch with $134,278,000 grossed to date, according to Box Office Mojo. The film, which tells the story of a fearless princess on an epic journey, did manage to sneak in at a prime time, capitalising on Catching Fire's waning interest and scooping up the family vote over the holiday.
All that could be about to change once The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug comes along though. The eagerly-anticipated sequel to Peter Jackson's 2012 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been brewing up interest with teasers, adverts and sneak previews since early summer and looks set to absolutely sweep the festive season box office rankings yet again.
Rather than just the younger demographic and their parents, The Hobbit 2 has the pulling power to appeal to all ages, genders and tastes with last year's The Hobbit at least a pretty good indicator of what's to come with over $1 billion grossed at the box office grossed worldwide, not to mention a handful of awards nominations along the way.
The new instalment, where Bilbo and co. venture into the realm of the formidable dragon Smaug, will be released this weekend and looks set to magnetise consistent scores of viewers right through the rest of the month.

The Hobbit's main competition this weekend is likely to come from Walt Disney Pictures' Saving Mr. Banks which stars Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson as Walt Disney and Mary Poppins author P.L Travers. The film looks at the relationship between the two as Disney tries to persuade the writer to sell the screen rights to her book.
Dark Comedy 'American Hustle' Looks Set To Be A Big Hitter This Weekend Too.
After Paul Walker's tragic death last weekend, it could be expected that New Orleans Hurricane Katrina drama Hours will perform better than originally expected and will attract interest from Walker's fans or those who otherwise may have not heard of the thriller.
American Hustle too has been steadily building interest, having been reviewed stunningly by the critics, wiith distinct Oscar buzz in the air, and of course its all-star cast of Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner. Will any of these movies even get a look-in once The Desolation of Smaug is unleashed though? Unlikely.
