Update: since this article was written, David Bar Katz has followed through on his threat to sue the National Enquirer for publishing fake quotes suggesting he was romantically involved with the late actor.

David Bar Katz, the man who found Philip Seymour Hoffman dead at the weekend, has allegedly claimed that he was having an affair with the Oscar-winning actor. The playwright said that the Capote star was not only his lover but that also he had witnessed him using cocaine the night before he died. However, we must stress this is straight from the National Enquirer - via Radar - so the chances of it being accurate, are, well, slim.

"We were homosexual lovers. We had a relationship," apparently revealed Katz to US magazine the National Enquirer, via Radar. "We were planning to go to the Super Bowl together and have a really nice day. This is so terrible," lamented Katz.

"I was Philip Seymour Hoffman's gay lover and saw him freebasing cocaine the night before he died," the playwright added. Katz also said that he's seen Hoffman use heroin on several occasions: "But I never thought his addiction had reached that level," he reportedly said. Katz found Hoffman dead in his apartment last Sunday (2nd Feb.) due to a suspected drug overdose.

It has been speculated that the collapse of the 12 year romance to costume designer Mimi O'Donnell fuelled his spiral back into drug addiction after more than 20 years sober. Friends of the actor have said that it was Hoffman's confusion over his sexuality that had caused the breakdown of his relationship with the mother of his three young children.

The 46 year-old actor entered rehab in May last year upon his first relapse and spent ten days in treatment. However, only weeks ago, Hoffman voiced concerns for his own life saying "'If I don't stop now, I know I'm going to die."

Since Hoffman's death, there have been news reports claiming that police found between 50 and 70 envelopes of what New York police believe to be heroin as well as used syringes and prescription drugs.

Four people have also been arrested on drugs charges after 350 bags of heroin were found but police have not yet found a link between the heroin in Hoffman's flat and the purported dealers', according to BBC News.

Hoffman's family say they are planning a private funeral service "for the family and close friends" followed by a memorial service, but no dates have been confirmed yet.
