Already announced were Friday and Saturday's headliners Ride and The Strokes, and now they've been joined by a host of other equally incredible artists. Thursday sees The Black Keys leading the bill alongside The Replacements, who are hitting Spanish stages for the first time and Antony and the Johnsons, who've been doing plenty since their last Barcelona gig. Bringing some variation to Thursday proceedings are electronic virtuosos James Blake, Richie Hawtin and Simian Mobile Disco.

Primavera Sound Festival - 2013 Preview

It's May and festival season is upon us, which means it will soon be time for Primavera Sound 2013, arguably the pinnacle of Europe's increasingly popular schedule. Set in beautiful Barcelona and mainly based on the Parc Del Forum site at the heart of the Diagonal Mar area of the Sant Marti district, this year's event will be the thirteenth edition of a festival that first opened its doors in the summer of 2001.

Primavera Sound Festival 2013 - Preview

As has been the norm in recent years, Primavera week kicks off with a series of fringe events starting on Monday 20th May. Sonic Boom's Spectrum headline the Sala Apolo venue, with the likes of Bo Ningen, Godflesh, Veronica Falls and Parquet Courts all playing there over the two nights. The main festival itself kicks off at the Parc Del Forum on Wednesday 22nd May, with The Vaccines and Delorean heading a bill that also includes hotly tipped US trio Guards and skatepunk duo The Bots.

The main event itself gathers momentum the next evening for the following three days, where over 200 artists will perform across eight different stages until the early hours of Sunday morning. However, as in previous years, that isn't where the fun ends, as there'll be a series of free shows on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May in the Parc De La Ciutadella featuring the likes of Merchandise, The Babies and Mac De Marco, while Sunday evening's closing ceremony at the Sala Apolo will see performances from Deerhunter, Come and The Orchids among many others.

A Week In Music - Eels Back On Form With 'Wonderful, Glorious, Frightened Rabbit Album Uncomfortable Listening, Depeche Mode's Broody New Video

Albums of Note... Mark Oliver Everett (better known as ‘E’) returns as eels, with new album Wonderful, Glorious. It’s a return to the form that we saw from Eels in the ‘90s. In recent years, Eels albums have been a rather bleak affair, as Everett has had to deal with the death of his parents, his sister and his cousin, all in a relatively short space of time. Wonderful, Glorious sees Eels get some of the fight back – literally, in ‘Kinda Fuzzy,’ in which he snarls “don’t mess with me I’m up for a fight.”“this teeth-grit, eyes ahead attitude is something we've come to expect from Eels, and Wonderful, Glorious is at its best when he's at his growliest… By the end you even sense a form of happiness has fallen upon this most maligned performer…"

Frightened Rabbit have parted ways with Brighton indie label Fat Cat and release their third album Pedestrian Verse on Atlantic Records. With most of the album’s tracks having been written around the time of Scott Hutchinson’s relationship breakup, it can make for a pretty uncomfortable listen at times. With a new producer at the helm the band seem to have developed a more free-flowing musical ideal, even if the emotions contained within are high in intensity.“In summary, 'Pedestrian Verse' can perhaps best be described as the sound of Frightened Rabbit doing what they do best. Just how many more fall outs and break-ups Scott Hutchison can through to continue the cycle remains to be seen, but for now this is up there alongside 'The Midnight Organ Fight' as one of the band's finest collections to date.”

Primavera Sound Festival, Poble Espanyol/Parc Del Forum, Barcelona 25-29 May 2011 Live Review

With more festivals to choose from than Tesco Mobile stores popping up in the centre of town, the sifting process of deciding where to go can be a bit like picking needles out of a haystack. Bearing this in mind, the idyllic setting of Barcelona played its part in selling Primavera as one of this summer's most viable options, as did an altogether stellar line-up that meant it nigh on impossible to have any spare time between the hours of 6pm and 6am the following morning.

Primavera Sound Festival, 2011 Preview

Wading through the growing number of festivals strewn throughout Europe there's a familiar look to most of them, both in terms of layout and the artists booked to play them. Standing out like a proverbial sore thumb head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd is Primavera Sound, now entering its eleventh year on the festival calendar.

Primavera Sound Festival, 2010 Live Review

They say the Spanish are a race of people who wave their hands and say 'mañana,' at organisation. 'They' have obviously never been to Primavera. Set in a stylish suburb of an even more stylish city, Primavera Sound runs with a ruthless efficiency. It's like a nuclear clock. Upon arrival, for instance, rather than just a mere wristband, you are presented with a swipe card and scanned in like a piece of fruit at the supermarket. If you get lost there are kiosks to borrow mobile phones, I don't queue longer than 3-4 mins for a beer, and I don't see one band taking the stage later than they should. Amazing really.

Primavera Sound Festival, 2010 Preview

Not many festivals can claim to have snowballed on the same scale as Primavera Sound. Beginning its life as a 'boutique' event back in 2001, it attracted a thoroughly decent 8,000 people. And yet this year, the promoters expect 74,000 to descend on Barcelona from the 27th-30th May, making this one of the most colossal festivals in Europe. What the hell happened there?
