Prince’s former backing band The Revolution have announced they will be reforming in his honour for a series of reunion shows. The band made the announcement in a video posted to Facebook, explaining that after spending time together grieving they had decide to reunite.

PrincePrince’s former backing band are reuniting.

“We have decided, after spending three or four days together now grieving over the loss of Prince, that we would like to come out and do some shows,” guitarist Wendy Melvoin said, sitting among her bandmates.

“And we want to let you know that we’ll be there soon, so we want to let you know now. So thank you, and see you soon.” The Revolution’s most famous line-up consisted of Melvoin, bassist BrownMark, keyboardists Matt (Doctor) Fink and Lisa Coleman, and drummer Bobby Z.

They served as Prince’s backing band during his early years and were featured alongside him in the 1984 film Purple Rain and its best selling soundtrack. Through various line-up changes and additions to the band they went on to record the albums 1999, Around the World in a Day and Parade with Prince, before disbanding in 1986.

The group have reunited at various points since their break-up three decades ago. During a 2000 concert in Minneapolis members Dr. Fink, Bobby Z. and Brown Mark joined Prince on stage to perform ‘America’.

Then in 2003 the group, minus Prince, appeared at a special charity concert featuring several of Prince's protégés held in Los Angeles. Their last big reunion came at a 2012 benefit concert in Minneapolis at First Avenue (the club from Purple Rain) where they again reunited without Prince.
