First "Annie" Trailer, Starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Makes Its Way Online

Quvenzhane Wallis Jamie Foxx Cameron Diaz Will Gluck

Calling all musical theater fans. Not only is the Annie movie officially coming to a screen near you soon, there’s also a trailer and everything. Just a heads up: there are two kinds of people – those who get emotional during Annie and those, who don’t have hearts. With that said, let Quvenzhane Wallis melt your heart in just the short time of the trailer.

Watch it below.

A thirty-second teaser trailer and preliminary movie poster were released Wednesday, showing Wallis in the title role, as well as Jamie Foxx as Daddy Warbucks and Cameron Diaz as the villainous Mrs Hannigan. The new clip, released by Entertainment Tonight, looks ever so slightly campy, what with Cameron Diaz’s strangely accented line “You think you’re better than me?” and the iconic Tomorrow, sung by Wallis, dramatically playing in the background. It doesn’t look like the problem is with any of the actors though – Annie was just never meant to be condensed into a trailer.

Cameron Diaz Is Miss Hannigan In Will Smith And Jay Z's 'Annie'

Cameron Diaz Carol Burnett Jamie Foxx Will Smith Jay Z Sandra Bullock Quvenzhane Wallis Emma Thompson Will Gluck Aline Brosh McKenna Rupert Everett

Sony have confirmed Cameron Diaz will be starring in Will Smith and Jay Z's musical re-envisioning of the hit Broadway musical Annie. Diaz has landed the role of Miss Hannigan, the cruel manager of the orphanage Annie initially lives in. Sandra Bullock was previously linked to the role and was involved in talks with Annie producers. However, it has been confirmed Diaz has the part.

Annie, initially a comic strip, was turned into a musical, opened on Broadway in 1977. The musical was turned into a film just five years later (1982). Carol Burnett played Miss Hannigan in this version, although her performance was slated by critics (as was the film in general which is still considered one of the worst in film history).

The Onion’s Quvenzhané Wallis Tweet – A PR Stunt?

Quvenzhane Wallis

The Onion have seemingly taken their shtick too far, but, considering it’s their unflinching, satirical take on the news that won them such a large audience in the first place, we’d be fools not to second guess their motives behind such an offensive tweet.

"Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis seems kind of a cunt, right? #oscars2013" came the tweet from the official Onion account. This is an online publication, which, if they’re to be believed, receives 40 million page views and roughly 7.5 million unique visitors per month – hallowed ground for any website. We can assume, then, that the people behind it, especially considering their brand, are smart, on-point and socially aware; social awareness is the cornerstone of their content. Now consider the worst thing that could happen when calling a 9-year-old girl a “c*nt”. Twitter outrage: obviously. A bunch of news stories about the onion: an obligatory consequence. Formal sanctions of any kind: not likely. See, with the anonymity involved – The Onion are yet to identify their writer – the very worst thing that can happen is increased exposure. Something any online content editor will tell you is no bad thing.

The Onion Offer Apology To Quvenzhane Wallis Over Crude, Offensive, Tweet

Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Quvenzhane Wallis Wendell Pierce Seth Macfarlane George Clooney

Quvenzhane Wallis, the 9-year-old actress nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars on Sunday, has received a personal apology from Steve Hannah, the chief executive of satirical newspaper The Onion, after it tweeted an offensive post about the young star. Wallis was dubbed a "c*nt" in the offensive tweet, that caused a storm during the Academy Awards broadcast.

"On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars," Steve Hannah wrote on the publication's Facebook page. "It was crude and offensive-not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting." The offending tweet - "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c***, right?" - was deleted about an hour after it was posted, though plenty of users, including some celebrities, were up in arms. Wendell Pierce of HBO's The Wire demanded that the publication identify the author of the tweet. "Let him defend that abhorrent verbal attack of a child. You call it humor, I call it horrendous," he tweeted. Pierce later added, "It doesn't matter what the intent was, it was offensive and they should apologize to Quvenzhane."

The Onion's apology continued, "We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again. In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible. Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry." The tweet was posted during a night when Seth Macfarlane joked "it'll be 16 years" before Wallis would be too old for George Clooney.

No. 1: Don't Call A Nine Year Old A C*nt - The Onion Tightens Twitter Rules After Quvenzhane Wallis Insult

Quvenzhane Wallis Jennifer Lawrence Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Rule number one: Don’t call a nine year-old a c*nt. We can only assume that this was the opening gambit of The Onion’s “new and tighter Twitter procedures” after they were forced to apologise for calling Quvenzhane Wallis a c*nt. Yes. That’s Quvenzhane Wallis, the nine year-old Oscar nominee. There’s a fine line between humour and insult, that’s for sure, but The Onion well and truly overstepped that line when they used the remark in a Tweet on Oscars night (February 24, 2013).

The satirical US publication issued a statement of apology, after deleting the offending tweet (but not before it had been re-tweeted several hundred times). The Onion’s CEO, Steve Hannah said “It was crude and offensive - not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting,” The Telegraph reported. He added “Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry” and explained that those involved in writing and posting the Tweet would be reprimanded.

So far, Quvenzhane Wallis has not commented on the tweet. Wallis did not win the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild but instead lost out to Jennifer Lawrence. If she had won, she would have been the youngest actress ever to take home the golden statuette.

The Onion Went Way Too Far Calling Quvenzhane Wallis A C-Word

Quvenzhane Wallis Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

The Onion is normally very funny. We liked the story about Kim Jong Il being named The Sexiest Man Alive 2012, largely because a Chinese newspaper ran the story as though it were real. The reactions of its audience, be that misinterpreting as the Chinese did, or taking their stories in the comedic manner they're meant, is what makes The Onion worth having around. However, when they called 10 year old actress and Academy Award nominee Quvenzhane Wallis a c-word... well, that was a joke too far. Far too far.

Quvenzhane Wallis To Take On Title Role In The Upcoming Annie Remake

Quvenzhane Wallis Will Smith Jay Z Willow Smith Jaden Smith Will Gluck

Quvenzhane Wallis will follow-up her Oscar nominated role in Beasts of the Southern Wild by taking on the lead role in the remake of the classic musical Annie, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced yesterday morning (Feb 24).

The young actress wowed audiences with her award-worthy performance as Hushpuppy in the Benh Zeitlin fantasy drama, and now the actress is reaping the benefits of her mature performance by signing up to her second post-BotSW role. Wallis will also star alongside Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender in the upcoming Twelve Years a Slave, which follows the story of a New York man kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South in the early 1800's.

Will Gluck, who directed Friends With Benefits, is already attached to directed the remake, which is being financed by Will Smith, Jay Z, Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter and Tyran Smith. Will and Jada's daughter Willow Smith was initially rumoured to be taking on the lead role, but it seems the appeal of having an Oscar nominee star in the film was too much for Will, who will be appearing alongside his son Jaden in the upcoming After Earth.

The Onion Call 9-Year-Old Quvenzhane Wallis A “C**t”

Quvenzhane Wallis Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Poor Quvenzhane Wallis; first of all, Hollywood managed to convince her that she might be in with a chance of an Oscar for Best Actress, then The Onion call her a “c**t”. “Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c*nt, right? #Oscars2013” read the tweet from the spoof-news site.

We understand The Onion’s shtick; they’re a controversial sort-of-site, with designs on raising eyebrows with their brand of false news, however close to the bone that news may be. Still, considering they’re just doing what any other site does – trying to get visitors – they’re not that different at all, are they? And besides - she’s a 9-year-old girl. The tweet, of course, was met with a barrage of complaints from angry fans, not that The Onion weren’t looking for that kind of reaction. And look, they’re getting it right now. Wallis didn’t take the gong for Best Actress; big bad bully Jennifer Lawrence stole of from the young starlet for her role in Silver Linings Playbook.

The Oscars 2013 – Quvenzhané Wallis Represents Longest Odds

Quvenzhane Wallis Oprah Winfrey Kelly Rowland Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Considering she’s the shortest actress in the category, Quvenzhané Wallis represents the longest odds to win Best Actress at The Oscars come this Sunday.

Should the miniature force of nature – as she’s been called – win the award, she won’t have just thrown the betting form out the window, she’ll beat the previous youngest winner, Marlee Matlin, who was 21 when she was honored for 1986's Children of a Lesser God, by around 12-years.

"If I don't win, at least I was nominated. And if I do win, at least I was nominated—so either way it goes, I am still nominated," Quvenzhané said in an interview last Friday, when she was visiting New York. Wise words from one so young. Quvenzhané – and we have it on good authority, is pronounced ‘kwav-en-ja-nay’ – has been mixing it with the biggest of celebs at Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Is 9 Too Young For An Oscar? Quvenzhane Wallis Divides Opinion

Quvenzhane Wallis Tatum O'neal Benh Zeitlin

Quvenzhane Wallis is amongst the youngest actors and actresses ever to have been nominated for an Oscar and has just over a week to wait, to determine whether or not she will become the youngest ever actress to win an Oscar, in the Best Actress category, for her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild. Currently, the youngest person ever to win an Oscar is Tatum O’Neal, who won a Best Supporting Actress award for 1974’s Paper Moon.

Is it right, though, that arguably the highest accolade an actress can win, could be awarded to a novice, with such little experience in the movie industry, when others have been honing their craft for so many years and navigating the pitfalls of the industry? Is it right that a 9 year-old could be considered the best actress in the movie industry right now? The movie’s director Benh Zeitlin spoke to Associated Press and explained why he felt that Quvenzhane is very much deserving of the award, explaining that she has a natural acting instinct, rare in one so young. One day, on set, when Wallis appeared to be struggling with the role, he took her to one side and asked what the problem was. “I can't snap it today. Normally I can snap it,” came her answer. “The fact that she had an internal sense of when she's in character, when she's getting the emotions right and feeling it, is really special even in experienced actors,” remarked Zeitlin, “but especially someone of her age to have that sort of self-awareness."

Thelma Adams, contributing editor at Yahoo! Movies, however, is of the opinion that the nomination is no good for a nine year old girl. “To have her nominated, it's not good for her… this red carpet thing is a grind.” It remains to be seen whether this year’s Best Actress announcement will be a record-breaking one (equally, it could go to 85 year old Emmanuelle Riva, tipping the scales the other way) but even to heap the pressure of an Oscars nomination on a 9 year old girl is a big ask.

Quvenzhane Wallis Set For Lead Role In Annie? About Time!

Quvenzhane Wallis Will Smith Willow Smith Jay Z

Quvenzhane Wallis is in line for a lead role in the remake of he musical Annie. Will Gluck will direct, and it'll be produced by Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment, reports Entertainment Weekly.

It's finally happening. Quvenzhane Wallis has been labelled anything from 'future star' to 'miniature force of nature' and it's been months since her performance in Beasts of The Southern Wild was lauded by the critics, and even earned her an Academy nomination for Best Actress (the youngest ever female to be nominated). But since the initial hype, things have died down somewhat with attention turning to some of film's big guns - Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, for instance. Now, though, young Wallis is being talked about in the big time again, and a role in Annie would surely suit her skillset, which is just about anything, really. We say it's about time the young-but-talented actress was being talked about for big films.

Will Smith and Jay-Z are set to take a pivotal role in Annie, with the latter providing the score for the film. Smith's daughter, Willow, was also suppoed to feature in the remake, but it turns out 12 is too old. Her father said: "Willow was supposed to be doing 'Annie', we got Jay-Z to do the movie, got the studio to come in and Willow had such a difficult time on tour with 'Whip My Hair' and she said, 'You know, daddy, I don't think so. I have a better idea, how about I just be 12.' "

Can Youngest Nominee Ever, Quvenzhane Wallis Win The Oscar For Best Actress?

Quvenzhane Wallis Emmanuelle Riva

The Oscars don't have an award for 'Breakthrough Artists' unlike many other awards' ceremonies, but in many respects that makes Quvenzhané Wallis's nomination for Best Actress that much more important and laudatory. She's the youngest person ever to be nominated for the award, though she's 9 now, she was just 5 (and had to lie about her age) when she auditioned for the role of Hushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild. But, when she's up against current Hollywood beau Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain, as well as French icon Emmanuelle Riva, what are her chances of winning?

We would really love to say that her chances are really, really good, but that's only because we'd give her the award right now. She's such a wild card, however, that there's very little to compare her nomination against. "We were trying to find any film that had been led by a 6-year-old," Benh Zeitlin, Beasts director said of Wallis, "so maybe it was madness or being naïve, but we had a faith that the story was going to find its way, that we could will miracles into existence, so we just searched and searched, and we found her." She truly has been a bit of a miracle, so perhaps her blessings can continue far enough for her to win that award.

At such a young age there may be fears that she'd simply be a one hit wonder, but she has already been snapped up by a much bigger production than Beasts, Steve McQueen's next project Twelve Years A Slave

Best Actress In A Leading Role Oscar Nominee Quvenzhane Wallis The Youngest Ever - Just Who Is She?

Quvenzhane Wallis

As ever, the Oscar nominations provided plenty of talking points after being announced earlier today (January 10, 2013), but of all the actors, directors and producers included over all of the categories, few have got so many people talking as the nomination of nine year-old Quvenzhane Wallis in the Best Leading Actress category. So who exactly is she?

Well, until the release of Beasts Of The Southern Wild no one would know at all. The Benh Zeitlin directed film (he himself is up for Best Director) has been enjoying a massive fairytale story ever since it took the Camera d’Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival last summer – and Wallis has been at the center of that. Playing Hushpuppy, her character was forced to go looking for her lost mother after her father became seriously ill, causing a series of extraordinary events to unfold. It was hard to believe it was her first role, and it was hard to believe it was so accomplished so young.

Wallis has since appeared on the Jay Leno Show as well as Super Soul Sunday. CBS wrote that Zeitlin auditioned her in her school, and said that he’d asked her to throw a stuffed animal at the producer she was running lines with, only to be told "It's not right to throw things at people you don't know.” The director went on to say “she was being defiant, but she was being defiant on the grounds of right and wrong. And that's who Hushpuppy is. She's this incredibly defiant warrior girl. I don't think I could have articulated that about her character until that moment in the audition." Should she win the Oscar for Best Leading Actress she will be the youngest winner ever – she’s already the youngest nominee. And if you want to see more of Wallis? She’s set to appear in Boneshaker and Twelve Years A Slave, both out this year.

Oscars 2013 Nominations For Best Lead Actress See Youngest And Oldest Ever Nominees Pit Their Wits Against Each Other

Jennifer Lawrence Naomi Watts Quvenzhane Wallis Jessica Chastain Emmanuelle Riva

The Oscar Nominations for Best Lead Actress are far harder to call than Lead Male, with a excellent selection of work between Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhane Wallis and Naomi Watts, this might be one of the toughest categories to call. If anything, it's a two-horse-race between Lawrence (who's now) and Chastain (2/1).

The category also sees and interesting first, with Wallis (9 years old) the youngest ever nominee, and Riva (85 years old) the oldest. Delivering such a strong performance at the age of 9 is truly staggering, but then so's being so active at 85, so how do you call that!?

Chastain's performance in controversial film Zero Dark Thirty sees her one of the favourites, but she'll face stiff competition from Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook. So popular has the rom-com with a psychological twist been, her co-star Bradley Cooper is nominated in the male equivalent, while David O Russell gets the nod for Director and the film for Best Picture.

Quvenzhane Wallis Gets Two Critic's Choice Awards Nominations After Age Lie To Star In Beasts Of The Southern Wild

Quvenzhane Wallis

Sometimes lies are okay. Sure we're told not to lie to anyone, ever, but if the miniature powerhouse that is Quvenzhane Wallis hadn't told a porky pie to the producers and casting directors of Beasts of The Southern Wild - who stipulated that applicants must be aged 6 or older - then it wouldn't be the film it is today.

And it's for that film that she's been twice nominated; once in her own age group for best young actor/acress, and once for overall lead actress - a category full of big old grown ups. There's something special about this kid, most notably her confidence away form the film set, and her humble nature. "Only one friend's seen the film, he's my cousin," she told the Huffington Post. "But they all kind of noticed, they asked 'Why are you out so much?' I said 'No reason.'" Born August 28, 2003 (doesn't that make you feel old), Wallis is now 9. Her immediate future sees roles for her in Twelve Years a Slave and Boneshaker - both in post-production and set for 2013 releases. "I'm just going to keep going," says Wallis. "My favourite film was 'Robots', then it was 'Princess and the Frog' and now it's 'Happy Feet'. I love penguins."

The Critic's Choice Awards will be handed out on January 10th, which happens to be the same day that The Academy Award Nominees are announced.

Silver Linings Playbook? Argo? Lincoln? Your Oscars Cheat Sheet For Best Picture!

Ben Affleck Steven Spielberg Tom Hooper David O Russell Joaquin Phoenix Philip Seymour Hoffman Michael Haneke Bradley Cooper Jennifer Lawrence Kathryn Bigelow Daniel Day Lewis Hugh Jackman Helena Bonham Carter Russell Crowe Anne Hathaway Paul Thomas Anderson Ang Lee Quvenzhane Wallis

David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook - a stunning dark comedy starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper - appears to have hijacked the Oscars race. Russell was tipped for a golden statuette with The Fighter, though missed out on the directing prize to Tom Hooper (The Kings Speech). His latest movie has certainly thrown a spanner into the works for the greatest film prize of them all, so we've compiled an Oscars cheat sheet for Best Picture in 2013. So read on, before cleverly dropping the information into conversations with your friends.

Who's the frontrunner?

There's still a handful of likely Oscar contenders to be released, though the eight or ten movies most strongly tipped to get nominated for Best Picture are now in place. The list is headed by two movies: Ben Affleck's thriller Argo and Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln. The bookmakers cannot choose between the two, but most give the former's movie the edge as recent history suggests this type of film is likely to please the younger looking Academy. The Hurt Locker famously usurped Avatar in 2009, and Affleck's slick movie has much in common with Kathryn Bigelow's classic Iraq War film. As mentioned, both films are pretty much neck-and-neck in the betting, though Argo is generally available at 3/1 while Spielberg's epic is around 4/1.

Beasts Of The Southern Wild Is "Beautiful, Funny, Timely And Tender"

Quvenzhane Wallis Benh Zeitlin

You have probably never heard of Quvenzhane Wallis. Well, you have now, because it has been written and you have read it, and you must now never forget that name (difficult though it may be- and even more difficult to spell). Quvenzhane Wallis. She was just 5 years old when she played Hushpuppy in 'Beasts of the Southern Wild', directed and co-written by Benh Zeitlin, a film that won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Festival this year.

Beasts of the Southern Wild is focalised through Hushpuppy and focuses around her and her alcoholic father, living in a fictional and poverty ridden area of Louisiana called 'Bathtub'. It focuses in their preparations for, reactions to, and relationships related to Hurricance Katrina. Part drama, part surreal, magical-realist masterpiece, this film is an absolute gem.

Critics from around the globe have gushed with praise for the film. The Telegraph said "Few American debuts in recent years have announced a talent as singular as that of Behn Zeitlin, the blazingly gifted director and co-writer of Beasts of the Southern Wild". Time Out said that it's "A dreamy but strikingly immediate and frayed-at-the-edges, child's-eye view of life on the margins of America." And, Empire described it as "Beautiful, funny, timely and tender, this is the American arthouse movie of the year." The Daily Mail were unsurprisingly cynical, particularly in regard to its "Left-wing wishful thinking" and refers to Hushpuppy's utterly beautiful and poetic prose as "nonsensical philosophising". We can only put this down to a sad lack of imagination and scorn for anything that isn't Taken 2. We can't yet say whether we consider Beasts of the Southern Wild to be our film of the year, but we love 'nonsensical philosophising' and are beyond impressed with the skills of a 5 year old to deliver that beautiful nonsense in such a heartfelt, sincere and engaging way. We can only applaud it.

Beasts Of The Southern Wild: The Reviews Are In

Quvenzhane Wallis

Beasts of the Southern Wild was granted its European debut today at the London Film Festival. We’re excited about this one, so we’ve had a look at some reviews and we’ll explain why you should be too. This is our Beasts of the Southern Wild review roundup

Quvenzhané Wallis, the young and extremely talented actress, who allegedly lied about her age, saying she was 5 so she could get the part, stars wonderfully in this dreamy epic surrounding a global warming. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film 4 stars, saying: “Benh Zeitlin's debut feature is part film, part hallucination: a ripe and gamey piece of what you might call Apocalyptic Southern Gothic, ambitious and flawed but sprinting with energy,” and rival British publication, The Telegraph tacked on another star: “Few American debuts in recent years have announced a talent as singular as that of Behn Zeitlin, the blazingly gifted director and co-writer of Beasts of the Southern Wild.” In fact, we struggled to find anything negative about this film; it’s just that good, apparently. Go watch our trailer and you’ll be booking your seats in no time. Empire Magazine possibly says it all in one line, with: “Beautiful, funny, timely and tender, this is the American arthouse movie of the year.”

Beasts… has been out in The U.S for quite a while, since Summer 2012, so now that it’s hit the U.K circuit, we think it’ll be an outsider when it comes to the Oscars. Can’t wait.
