There are ongoing fears for country music performer Randy Travis' health this evening after it was revealed that his fragile health has taken a turn for the worst. What started out as viral cardiomyopathy has taken an even more sinister turn as it has emerged that Travis suffered a stroke as a result of congestive heart failure.

According to his hospital, Baylor Health Care System, the singer "is currently undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He is in critical condition," adding that they'll keep posting updates as his condition evolves. Critically ill Travis is surrounded by the support of his family and friends in a Texan hospital. Before the stroke on Wednesday, Travis' physicians had said that his condition was stable and he was showing "signs of improvement" after he was originally admitted to hospital on Monday due to a viral upper respiratory infection.

Speaking to People magazine on Monday, Randy's sister-in-law Teresa Trawick spoke of a trend for heart problems within the family: "(His mother) passed away at an early age with her heart, so it is like these boys are following right in their footsteps," referring to her husband, Randy's brother Ricky, who had a heart attack last year.

Though Travis has had a rather busy show schedule recently, which could have fatigued him, the 'He Walked On Water' singer has had to attempt to deal with a dented relationship after a string of incidents in 2012 involving alcohol, including losing control of his car, being found naked and drunk in public, threatening intervening police officers, and street brawling. In January 2013, he received a sentence of two years of probation, a $2,000 fine, and a 180 day suspended jail sentence. He had been scheduled to play a show on Wednesday in Deadwood, South Dakota, but the performance has had to be cancelled in light of his compromised health with no set date for hospital release.
