Florence Foster Jenkins Review

Excellent

Although this comedy-drama seems to have been written specifically to give Meryl Streep a chance to dress up and put on a silly show, it's actually all true. And it's hugely entertaining, generating gut-wrenching laughter and some sharply resonant emotions too. It's also a subtle exploration of pop culture, most notably privileged artists and the fact that there's more to stardom than just talent.

Streep shines as Florence, a socialite who hosts lavish parties in 1944 New York with her husband St Clair (Hugh Grant). Both of them are frustrated artists: Florence sees herself as an opera diva, while St Clair never quite made it as an actor. So at her parties, Florence puts on performances for her friends, oblivious to the fact that she's riotously off-key, while St Clair plays the doting husband, protecting her from criticism and hiring talented young pianist Cosme McMoon (Simon Helberg) as her accompanist. Florence doesn't really mind that St Clair has a woman (Rebecca Ferguson) on the side. But when she books Carnegie Hall to perform a concert for troops returning from Europe, St Clair realises that he can't protect her from a real audience.

Writer Nicholas Martin and director Stephen Frears construct the story beautifully, building up to reveal Florence's voice in a painfully hilarious sequence that's expertly played by Streep, Grant and Helberg. Streep's enjoyment of the role is infectious, and she makes Florence sympathetic by letting us see her yearning to sing. She imagines she sounds like her operatic idols, so can't hear the strangled notes coming from her mouth. And those who don't applaud are laughing so heartily that surely they're just as entertained. Streep's performance soars through the performance scenes, but is just as powerful in the comedy and at moments when Florence is vulnerable and nervous.

Florence Foster Jenkins Trailer

The shows Florence Foster Jenkins put on were true spectacles but there were only a modest few who were privileged enough to witness them. The American socialite wasn't exactly given a natural gift to sing, but that wasn't going to put her off her ambition to appear on the same stages as some of the best operatic voices of her time.

Her ever-loving second husband was always on her side to give her the support to fulfil said dream.

In recent years Meryl Streep has appears in many films including Ricki and the Flash, Into the Woods and Mama Mia which all include musical scenes which she must showcase her vocal abilities, now she must take on a completely different approach in order to sufficiently mimic Foster Florence Jenkins' unique voice.

Florence Foster Jenkins was never what you might call a 'naturally' talented opera singer, however she had a remarkable talent for entertaining crowds. Most opera singers are trained from a young age but without her father's help (which he refused) Florence was unable to raise the funds to support her dream.

After her father's death, Florence found herself heir to enough money to begin a quest to fulfil her dream. She set up her own club and became a member of many social groups. Her live shows became renowned but she would never make her appearances public. Each of her shows had a strict guest list, with Florence deciding exactly who would get the tickets.

With the help of her husband St. Clair Bayfield, in 1944 at the age of 76, Florence finally decided that it was time to take up a new challenge and perform to her biggest crowd to date at Carnegie Hall.

James Arthur Has The Promotional Budget But Could The Justice Collective Have The Christmas Number One?

The X Factor James Arthur Holly Johnson Sir Paul McCartney Robbie Williams Rebecca Ferguson

The race is on for the UK Christmas Number one, due to be announced on Sunday December 23, 2012.

It’s a battle of two charity singles this year: The x factor winner James Arthur is looking for a second week at number one with ‘Impossible’, the proceeds of which will go to help the charity Together For Short Lives (which helps sick children), whilst The Justice Collective are hoping for the number one slot with their cover of The Hollies’ ‘He Ain’t Heavy (He’s My Brother).’ The Justice Collective single is also a charitable concern, raising money to help the families of those affected by the Hillsborough Disaster with their legal fees.

Despite receiving far less airplay than Arthur, The Justice Collective – which features Holly Johnson, Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams and Rebecca Ferguson, among many others – currently looks to be in the front-running for the title. The former Frankie Goes To Hollywood singer, Holly Johnson, is urging the public to go out and buy the single – not simply so that it can go to number one, but because it will help the families of the victims of the 1987 disaster.

Close Call: James Arthur ‘Impossible’ Inches Ahead In Race For Christmas No.1

The X Factor James Arthur Sir Paul McCartney Robbie Williams Paloma Faith Melanie C Rebecca Ferguson

Could James Arthur bag the 2012 Christmas Number One after all? Despite the bookies selecting The Justice Collective’s Hillsborough charity single as the likely candidate, it now looks as though James Arthur is now the favourite for the number one slot this year. His single ‘Impossible’ looks to be heading to the top of the chart, despite the huge support for The Justice Collective’s cover of The Hollies’ ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,’ which is raising money to help the families of those killed in the Hillsborough disaster with their legal fees.

James’ single is also raising money for charity. Proceeds from his single will go to Together For Short Lives, which debuted last week with sales of 490,000. The Managing Director of the Official Charts Company told STV “While James Arthur has an early lead over The Justice Collective after just two days of sales, it is exceptionally tight – especially with Christmas gift purchases likely to impact on both releases as the week progresses. It looks like being an extremely exciting race for this year’s Official Christmas Number One." So it’s not quite in the bag for The X Factor winner then, but he’s in the lead at the moment. Can he keep hold of his lead until the weekend? Or will the Justice Collective take over.

The Justice Collective features contributions from Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, Paloma Faith, Mel C and Rebecca Ferguson.

The superstar will also take to the stage in Manchester, Cardiff, Newcastle, Sheffield, Aberdeen and Glasgow before closing his Tuskegee UK tour at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham on December 15.

Richie's latest album was a huge success in the U.S, debuting at No.2 on the Billboard 200 with solid sales of 199,000 - his best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. In its third week, Tuskegee sold 129,000 copies to rise to No.1 and become his third chart topping album. It was for a time, the second best-selling album of 2012, behind Adele's all-conquering 21.

Hillsborough Charity Single To Be Released In Aid Of Liverpool Fans' Families

Robbie Williams Melanie C Rebecca Ferguson Paloma Faith Mick Jones

A single is to be released to be released to help families of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster as they seek to recoup legal costs paid out over 23 years of fighting the authorities.

There was jubilation around Merseyside recently after it was finally determined via inquiry that Liverpool fans were not at fault for the deaths of 96 of their fans at a soccer match between their club and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough, Sheffield on April 15, 2012. The battle has been long and hard, after the South Yorkshire Police had originally blamed the fans for the tragedy, and now the hope is that those who covered up the affair will be brought to justice.

The single though, a cover of The Hollies He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother, will be recorded by Robbie Williams, Mel C, Rebecca Ferguson and Paloma Faith, with other artists involved including Mick Jones from The Clash, Chris Sharrock from Oasis and the Lightning Seeds, and Gerry Marsden.  It will be doing battle for the Christmas number one singles spot in the UK, probably against whoever wins the latest X Factor series. The money raised from it is of far importance than where it might finish, with the families of the 96 having spent tens of thousands in their quest for justice.
