Rebecca Hall Was Initially Taken Aback By The Christine Script

Rebecca Hall

After premiering at Sundance in January, the film has made the round of global festivals, and was screening at the London Film Festival just as it opened in US cinemas. This is the true story of Christine Chubbuck, a 29-year-old journalist at a TV station in Florida who in 1974 shot herself in the head during a live newscast. Since then, it's been revealed that she suffered from a variety of mental health issues.

Hall says that despite the controversy, she was drawn to writer Craig Shilowich and director Antonio Campos' sensitive take on the story. "I'd not heard of Christine Chubbuck," Hall says. "When I read the synopsis, I was like, 'Why? Why do this?' I got kind of angry about it. And then I realised actually that if a film doesn't grapple with this in a way that is compassionate and universal, then the thing she did is left to become reductive horror. Because that's how she appears on the internet, on every top ten most shocking list."

The BFG Review

Very Good

For his adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, Steven Spielberg reunited with screenwriter Melissa Mathison, with whom he made E.T. nearly 35 years ago. Another story of an unlikely friendship, this film is even more wondrous and earnest, and also much more reliant on effects. But it's also hugely involving, with a terrific cast and of course a delightful story with a wry sense of humour.

It's set in a timeless London, where Sophie (newcomer Ruby Barnhill) lives in an orphanage. One night she spots a stealthy giant (Mark Rylance) prowling the city streets, so he grabs her and takes her back to Giant Country so she can't reveal his secret existence. As she gets to know him, Sophie discovers that he's an outcast in his own community, half the size of the nine giants (including Jemane Clement and Bill Hader) who live around him and bully him mercilessly because he doesn't eat human beans. This has earned him the nickname Big Friendly Giant, which Sophie shortens to BFG as she accompanies him into a colourful parallel world in his job collecting dreams and nightmares. Then when the bullies' threats grow stronger, Sophie comes up with a plan to get help from the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and her staff (Rebecca Hall and Rafe Spall).

'Iron Man 3' Director Says Film's Villain Was Changed From Female To Male Because Of Toy Sales

Shane Black Guy Pearce Rebecca Hall Kevin Feige Robert Downey Jr

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black has shed new light on the sexism in the movie industry, by describing how the villain in the 2013 Marvel film had to be changed from female to male, to help toy sales. Speaking to Uproxx, Black said that after the draft of the film’s script was finished, he received a memo saying the villain’s gender had to be changed to male, because a female toy wouldn't sell as well.

Shane BlackShane Black has revealed how Iron Man 3’s villain was changed from male to female.

“All I’ll say is this, on the record: There was an early draft of Iron Man 3 where we had an inkling of a problem,” Black began. “Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the draft.” The character is thought to be Rebecca Hall’s Maya Hansen, who ended up having a much smaller part.

The BFG - Teaser Trailer

Sophie has spent her life alone. She lives in an orphanage full of girls just like her. Each night the girls tell tales of the witching hour when the boogieman comes to visit and children go missing, Sophie's friends believe the witching hour is at midnight but little Sophie doesn't agree, she thinks the hour is much later, at 3am when only Sophie remains awake.

One night, whilst Sophie is reading, she hears an almighty rumble from outside and cannot help but open the window and look to see what's there; what she finds will change the lives of many forever.

The BFG is the much loved Roald Dahl book which was originally published by the author in 1982. The book was later turned into an animated film which featured David Jason as the voice of The BFG.

Johnny Depp Rebecca Hall Paul Bettany Christopher Nolan

Johnny Depp's new science fiction thriller Transcendence isn't even out yet in most countries but box office prospects are looking shaky for its upcoming debut weekend. With its intriguing premise and dark moral message, the film was supposed to be simultaneously Depp's comeback after the critically trashed Lone Ranger and first foray into leading a sci-fi film but has unfortunately failed to ignite reviewers' imaginations so far.

If Women Make The Best Spies, Will We Ever See A Female Bond?

Daniel Craig Rebecca Hall

A leading female intelligence officer has gone on record as saying women make "bloody good spies" because of their ability to understand emotions and multi-task. During an interview with the Times, an anonymous intelligence officer going by the name of Lisa suggested that being a mother is an advantage too, because it allows women to connect with a wide variety of people, from terrorists to political leaders.

"I am less of a threat than a single female," said Lisa, who is married with young children, "They [the terrorists] have mothers, sisters, daughters."

Robert Downey Jr, Rebecca Hall and Stanley Tucci were among the high profile attendees at the Iron Man 3 premiere in London on Thursday (April 18, 2013). After an initial postponement following the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the premiere went ahead and was a typically star-studded affair. Of course, most of the crowd had turned out to catch a glimpse of Downey Jr, the Hollywood star who reprises his role as Tony Stark for the third time in the latest movie. Speaking to Sky News at the premiere, the actor said he was unsure if he will play the role again. "Right now the future is uncertain, but I think it's very important that we end this first Marvel phase in a way that is definitive and has people asking questions," he said.

Downey's contract is up with Marvel, though it would be unthinkable for the studio to let him go without a fight. His co-star Don Cheadle, who plays War Machine, said he would do his best to persuade the actor to don the metallic suit again. "I'm going to threaten him that I'll let all his secrets out and then maybe we'll see if he can come back!" he joked.

Iron Man 3 Stills Show Robert Downey Jr In Full Armour (Pictures)

Robert Downey Jr Gwyneth Paltrow Rebecca Hall Guy Pearce

It's been a big week for fans of Iron Man 3, with a brand new TV spot airing during the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, confirmation that Gywneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts will be suiting up alongside Robert Downey Jr and, now, some brand new stills from Marvel's new movie. The Avengers destroyed box-office records this summer, though Downey Jr's return as Tony Stark could make it another huge year for the studio. This time, Mr Stark is up against a brand-new foe in Ben Kingsley's Mandarin, his toughest test to date.

Paltrow's Potts is the most prominent of the supporting cast and rumors that she'd be donning a suit of armour of her own were confirmed in this week's new TV spot. Speculation first emerged after images of LEGO's new Iron Man 3 series were leaked online, showing a female character in an Iron Man-esque suit. In the promo, Potts lands on-top of Stark in a protective stance, saying, "I got you." It appears as though the new movie follows Pepper's storyline in the 'Invincible Iron Man' comic book series, in which she took on the hero name Rescue and helped Tony Stark's alter-ego on his missions.

Better Than Downton? Benedict Cumberbatch Drama 'Parade’s End' Is A Critical Hit

Benedict Cumberbatch Rebecca Hall Tom Stoppard

Benedict Cumberbatch’s new period drama Parade’s End depicts life in World War I England and the co-production between HBO and the BBC has so far impressed TV critics, with the first of five episodes, due to air on HBO tonight (February 26, 2013). Tom Stoppard worked on the adaptation of Ford Madox Ford’s work of fiction and Benedict Cumberbatch (playing jilted husband Christopher Tietjens) and Rebecca Hall (Tietjens’ straying wife, Sylvia) are the undoubted stars of the show.

Both Cumberbatch and Hall have stellar reputations in the UK, though Hall is better established over the pond, having starred in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Once the inevitable comparisons to that other popular period drama Downton Abbey are out of the way, New York Times praise Cumberbatch for his delivery of lines such as ‘I shan’t have a house again, anything beyond a flat looks like impudence in a man who can’t keep his wife,’ writing that “It is to Mr. Cumberbatch’s credit that he delivers such lines without a smile or a smirk, as befits his unusual character.” They add that Cumberbatch is “almost unrecognizable in this role,” a sure sign that he’s not conforming to type – good news for any serious actor looking for challenging roles.

Elsewhere on Popmatters, Hall is described as a “firebrand” and argues that Sylvia “emerges as the most fascinating character in Parade’s End by several degrees.”

Iron Man 3 Trailer

Tony Stark may be Iron Man, but he's feeling less than unbreakable these days. Plagued by nightmares and guilty feelings, he is forced to doubt himself and his ability to protect himself and the ones he loves against a new enemy; the formidably ruthless Mandarin. His doubts are only amplified when his world and his power source are brutally snatched from him and left to burn at the hands of his enemy and he is left with his own internal strengths and resourcefulness alone to find the perpetrator and end his reign of terror. Stark is finally made to confront himself and his superhero identity as Mandarin sets out to prove there are no real heroes in the world.

The third instalment of this Marvel adventure, 'Iron Man 3' is set to be the most hard-hitting of the movies so far with questions being raised less about Iron Man and more about the true Tony Stark and his deeper abilities. It has been directed by Shane Black (the writer of the 'Lethal Weapon' film series) who also co-wrote the comic action flick with Drew Pearce ('Lip Service', 'No Heroics'). It is set for a spectacular release in cinemas on April 26th 2013 in the UK.

Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, Ben Kingsley, Paul Bettany, William Sadler, Stan Lee, Yvonne Zima, Dale Dickey, Ashley Hamilton, Ty Simpkins, Spencer Garrett,

Hot Tickets! This Weekend’s US Movie Releases: Hyde Park On Hudson, Playing For Keeps, Lay The Favorite, Bad Kids Go To Hell

Bill Murray Roger Michell Laura Linney Olivia Williams Gerard Butler Jessica Biel Rebecca Hall Bruce Willis Stephen Frears Judd Nelson

Kind of a disappointing showing this week folks, best hold on for those Christmas heartwarmers, or, if you’re one of the 56 people left on the globe that haven’t seen Skyfall, that’s probably still showing…

Hyde Park On Hudson has been touted by many as Bill Murray’s next stab at Oscar success. However, the movie itself has hardly received glowing reviews. Directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill) and also starring Laura Linney and Olivia Williams, Hyde Park on Hudson tells the story of Franklin D Roosevelt and his love affair with his distant cousin, Margaret Stuckley. The ‘action’ takes place over a weekend in 1939, when the King & Queen of England visited upstate New York.

Murray’s performance has been hailed as a masterpiece and there have been mutterings of Oscar contention, but it seems that Murray is a jewel in a pretty shabby crown, here. He may carry the film, but it’s clear that it’s a deadweight. Bill will have to keep his fingers crossed that the Academy award voters can stay awake through the historical drama long enough to appreciate his performance.

Iron Man 3 Teaser Trailer Does The Trick

Robert Downey Jr Gwyneth Paltrow Ben Kingsley Guy Pearce Rebecca Hall

A brief but effective teaser trailer of the upcoming 3rd installment of the Iron Man series of movies has been released online.

Those cheeky devils at Marvel certainly do know how to tickle our movie-going-tastebuds. The 18 second trailer sees various scenes from the film, utterly rife with drama and intrigue. Tony Stark AKA Iron Man being harassed by the press, Pepper Potts in hysterical tears, overcome by fear as we see her trapped in something metal, somewhere dark, and Ben Kingsley who plays the hero's arch nemesis The Mandarin, loading a gun. None of it's surprising, but nothing could excite us more. As yet, the film is a long way off, but tomorrow (23rd Oct 2012) sees the release of the official full length trailer, which is just enough to keep us satisfied until the release of the movie.

Robert Downey Jr. again stars as the eponymous hero, and Gwyneth Paltrow returns to her role as his love interest, but this film will also include newbies Guy Pearce (Memento) and Rebecca Hall (Frost/Nixon), as the creators of a virus. ABC News reports a brief synopsis for the film, which reads: "With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?" A question everyone wants to know the answer to, but even with the trailer released tomorrow, we'll have to wait another 6 and a half months to find out! Iron Man 3 is set for release May 3rd 2013.

The Awakening Review

Good
A nifty twist on the standard ghost story, this British period drama starts extremely well and then slips into overwrought melodrama. And while the plot feels a little too gimmicky, at least it's complex enough to hold our interest.

In 1921 England, Florence (Hall) makes a fortune debunking fake psychics who claim to talk to the ghosts of Brits who died from war and flu over the previous decade. Her latest challenge is to solve a mystery at a private school in Cumbria, working with teacher Robert (West) and matron Maud (Staunton).

Rumour has it that the ghost of a schoolboy haunts the house, so Florence sets out to find out what's really going on. But she has her scepticism shaken to the core by some genuinely bizarre events.
