Rebel Wilson Wins Her Defamation Case Against Bauer Media

Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson has emerged triumphant in her defamation case against publishing conglomerate Bauer Media in Australia.

A jury comprised of six people spent two days in deliberations, during which they considered eight potentially defamatory magazine articles published by outlets owned by Bauer, including Woman’s Day and Australian Women’s Weekly, and also considered 40 questions to guide them.

They handed their verdict to the supreme court of Victoria on Thursday (June 15th), finding that the 37 year old star of Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids was defamed by Bauer Media when those publications they own accused her of lying about her age and childhood upbringing.

Rebel Wilson Begins Defamation Lawsuit In Australia

Rebel Wilson

Lawyers for film star Rebel Wilson have told an Australian court that her “world collapsed” when a series of articles published by Bauer Media in 2015 portrayed her as a liar, in a defamation lawsuit brought by the actress against the publisher.

As the case brought by the 37 year old Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids star, real name Melanie Elizabeth Bownds, began in court in Melbourne on Monday (May 22nd), her lawyer Matthew Collins QC claimed that articles claiming that Wilson lied about her age, name and upbringing appeared in several of Bauer Media’s publications, including Woman’s Day and Australian Women’s Weekly.

Rebel Wilson Reveals She Used Her Weight To Get Famous

Rebel Wilson

Comedy actress Rebel Wilson has revealed that she deliberately gained weight early on in her career and used to her “advantage”.

The 36 year old actress, who has racked up a large amount of starring roles in comedies like Bridesmaids and Grimsby, but is probably best known for her role as Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect movies, was interviewed by the Daily Telegraph.

Asked about her size and how she felt about it probably being the most recognised aspect of her fame, she revealed that she once wrote a play and cast herself alongside a much larger girl, and quickly noticed that her co-star was being better received – which she ascribed to her weight.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Review

OK

Nearly 25 years after the sitcom debuted, Edina and Patsy arrive on the big screen to continue their drunken antics, although without the usual enthusiastic laugh-track everything feels eerily muted. Thankfully, there's still a lot of fun to be had, including well-aimed jabs at celebrity culture. Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are still hilarious in their signature roles. And it's hard to get too worried about the limp plot when every scene is packed with amusing cameo appearances.

With her PR agency fading and her money spent on expanding her home, Edina (Saunders) discovers that her credit cards are "broken" and her champagne fridge is empty. So she and her pal Patsy (Lumley) set out to make some cash. After failing to sell her memoirs, Edina sets out to woo Kate Moss as a client. But this goes spectacularly wrong when Kate ends up falling off a balcony into the Thames. Now under investigation, Eddie and Pats flee to the South of France to find Patsy's wealthy ex (Barry Humphreys). They're chased by a detective (Robert Webb), who's the boyfriend of Edina's daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha), whose teen daughter (Indeharna Donaldson-Holness) has run off with them.

Written by Saunders, the script is very loose, bouncing around without much focus before a series of impatient, nonsensical conclusions. Basically, it's little more than a flimsy framework that includes brief scenes for series regulars (including Jane Horrock's airhead assistant, June Whitfield's dotty mum, Celia Imrie's rival PR and Kathy Burke's bulldog editor), plus a few new characters like Chris Colfer's stylist. All of these people have their moments, but never quite emerge as much more than comedy sketch figures. On the other hand, the big-screen format allows Saunders and Lumley to give Edina and Patsy a bit of surprising emotional depth amid the usual slapstick nuttiness.

Adele Denies Rebel Wilson Is About To Play Her In Biopic Film

Adele Rebel Wilson

Adele has laughed off reports that Rebel Wilson is set to play her in an upcoming biopic movie about her life, saying that the media has only made the link because they are both “plus-sized”.

A recent article in the Daily Star suggested that the Australian stand-up comedian, and a star of light-hearted movies such as Pitch Perfect and How To Be Single was interested in the role so she could “prove she can cut it as a serious actress”.

However, the 27 year old British singer used her Tuesday night gig at London’s O2 Arena to ridicule the content of the report, denying that there was even a film in which to cast Wilson in the first place.

Rebel Wilson Believes She Was 'Spiked' At A Club, Warns Fellow Girls

Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson pleads with her female fans to stay vigilant while out in bars and clubs at night, after an incident where she suspected someone had slipped something into her drink while she was out with friends. The actress wasn't harmed or approached even after she sipped the laced beverage, though she soon started to feel a little dazed.

The 'Grimsby' star was out in a 'trendy club' on Wednesday night (March 9th 2016) when she started to feel unwell after a few sips of her first drink. Luckily, it wasn't long before she realised that something wasn't quite right about what she was drinking and she got herself home before anything could happen to her.

Grimsby Review

OK

Although it contains some memorably outrageous comedy moments, this movie (retitled The Brothers Grimsby for North America) is such an awkward combination of gross-out humour, violent action and sappy sentimentality that it never becomes a classic. Sacha Baron Cohen creates yet another lively alter ego as lager lout Noddy, although he isn't nearly as fully formed as the indelible Ali G, Borat and Bruno.

Noddy Butcher lives in Grimsby, northeast England, with his girlfriend (Rebel Wilson) and 9 or maybe 11 kids. His main passions in life are football and beer, then he learns that his long-lost brother Sebastian (Mark Strong) is alive and working as a super-spy. So Noddy heads to London and crashes Sebastian's latest mission, protecting a model-turned-philanthropist (Penelope Cruz). In the havoc, the brothers end up on the run trying to both clear their names and prevent an impending terror attack. This takes them to South Africa and Chile, as they're pursued by both a villainous thug (Scott Adkins) and a ruthless assassin (Sam Hazeldine) hired by Sebastian's boss (Ian McShane). Along the way, they're assisted by Sebastian's love-lorn colleague (Isla Fisher), locals (including Gabourey Sidibe and Barkhad Abdi) and the gang from Nobby's hometown pub.

The script merrily pushes the boundaries of taste, often with riotous vulgarity. Some of this is so jaw-dropping that it's funny (an unforgettable scene involving a herd of elephants), while other jokes are harder to take (a running gag about HIV infection). Most of the humour centres squarely on male genitalia and anal insertion, which gives the film an oddly homophobic undercurrent that will only amuse the drunken yobs in the audience. More interesting is the wildly astute pastiche of Britain's perceived benefits fraud subculture. But director Louis Leterrier (The Transporter) seems uninterested in this, instead focussing on intensely brutal action, which results in an unusually high body count for a comedy.

How To Be Single Review

Very Good

There isn't much originality in this rude female-led comedy, but its observations on single life are a nicely updated twist on the Sex and the City formula. The film is also often very funny, keeping the energy levels high while refusing to go down the usual narrative route in each of the loosely intertwined plot-strands.

It's set in New York, of course, where Alice (Dakota Johnson) is newly single and starting a new job. Her colleague Robin (Rebel Wilson) takes her under her wing, teaching her how to be single in the big city. Alice's sister Meg (Leslie Mann) is a maternity doctor who's suddenly feeling the need to have a child of her own. Then just as she becomes pregnant using a sperm bank, she meets the outrageously charming Ken (Jake Lacy), who she thinks might be too young for her. Meanwhile, Alice's neighbour Lucy (Alison Brie) is flirting with the womanising local barman Tom (Anders Holm) as she looks for her perfect man.

Yes, this is another movie in which women define themselves by their aching need for a man. This kind of undermines the "you have to be happy on your own" message, although at least the three main romantic-comedy plots don't fit into the usual cliched structure. The film is packed with frank, girly conversations, exploring how it feels to be single in a society in which coupling up is seen as the ultimate goal. So while commenting on every possible aspect of sex and relationships, the script also tries to say that it's perfectly fine to remain happily unattached. Thankfully, the cast is grounded enough to balance the comedy and romance in realistic situations. Johnson, Brie and Mann all deliver funny, revealing performances as smart women who make silly decisions. Wilson, by contrast, is mere comic relief in the same role she always plays.

Pitch Perfect 2 - International Trailer

Suspended after an unfortunate incident of accidental nudity during a performance of Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball', the spunky all-girls a cappella singing group the Barden Bellas are subsequently replaced by European champions Das Sound Machine. They've got a lot of work to do if they want to win the World Championships and beat their rivals, and while they've certainly got both the attitude and more than enough talent having previously succeeded at winning the National stakes, whether or not their ideas can bring them further fortune is another matter. Nonetheless, they have each other, and that's the most important thing for them to hold on to right now as now they face more than just embarrassment and Europeans, but prejudice and heavy doubt from the organisers.

Pitch Perfect 2 - Super Bowl TV Spot

The Barden Bellas are back after their impressive victory in a national a cappella chorus competition, where they proved the strength of girl power over some of the biggest choirs in the country. Beca, Emily, Chloe, Aubrey, Cynthia-Rose, Stacie, Lilly, Jessica and Fat Amy have got bigger fish to fry these days, as they eye up global competition ahead of the daunting international contest. They may have bags of confidence, but as no American chorus has ever managed to land the coveted prize before, it may not be enough to get them through this time. Nonetheless, it's time these girls tested their odds against the greatest collective voices on the planet, even if their new rivals are showing some seemingly matchless talent.

Owen Wilson Felt Comfortable With Funny Co-Stars On 'Night At The Museum 3'

Owen Wilson Ben Stiller Steve Coogan Rebel Wilson Robin Williams Ricky Gervais Shawn Levy

It's probably true when it comes to most family comedies that being involved is less stressful than a more serious drama, but Owen Wilson feels that doesn't ring more true than on the set of 'Night Of The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb'.

Owen Wilson [R] says Steve Coogan [L] and Ben Stiller make him laugh

There may be a lot of chaos what with wild animals and cavemen running loose in London, but 'Night At The Museum' is a set that star Owen Wilson, who plays miniature cowboy Jedediah in the franchise, feels right at home on - mainly because of the stellar cast he has surrounding him. 'Working with Ben Stiller... we've worked together on a lot of things and for me it's just very familiar and very comfortable', he explains. 'And then Steve Coogan and Ben Stiller, that's who my scenes are usually always with... those guys just made me laugh.'

Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb Review

Good

Now in its third instalment, it's clearer than ever that this franchise is based on one joke that has been stretched far beyond the breaking point. And not too cleverly at that. Fortunately, this movie retains much of the deranged idiocy that made the second part rather enjoyable. So it's watchable even if there aren't many new ideas, and even if filmmaker Shawn Levy is far too happy to settle for unnecessary digital effects work where a bit of character comedy would have been much more engaging.

Back on the job as a night watchman in New York, Larry (Ben Stiller) is now orchestrating the museum exhibits when they come to life to provide spectacular shows for visitors who think this is all a special effect. Even his boss (Ricky Gervais) isn't sure what's really going on. But when a glitch in the magical Ancient Egyptian powers causes chaos, Larry learns that he needs to travel to London so he can reunite Ahkmenrah (Rami Malek) with his father (Ben Kingsley), who's on display at the British Museum. Larry's teen son Nick (Skyler Gisondo) comes along, as do his revived pals Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), tiny soldiers Octavius and Jedediah (Steve Coogan and Owen Wilson) and others. But in London, while sneaking around local night guard Tilly (Rebel Wilson), Larry's team awakens a statue of the knight Lancelot (Dan Stevens), who dives into their quest with rather a bit too much gusto.

Until Lancelot turns up, everything about the film feels oddly tired, from the starry cameos to effects work that strains to be clever. Then Stevens injects a badly needed jolt of blue-eyed charisma and warped comical timing that makes the rest of the movie rather good fun. Rebel Wilson's side-plot is also rather amusing, with some wonderfully ridiculous touches. And even the cameos get better, notably a scene on a West End stage that's genuinely inspired silliness. Coogan and Wilson offer some raucous banter to accompany everything that happens, and Stiller kind of hangs on for dear life. But the filmmakers don't really care about these characters; they're just trying to create something visually impressive that's also goofy fun.

But now it seems they could be pushing themselves too far as they venture forth into the daunting international contest - a competition that no American group has ever won before. Apparently, because no-one likes Americans. Go figure.

Pain & Gain Review

Good

Spirited and very funny, this movie should actually be rather disturbing since it's a true story about torture and murder. But director Michael Bay is so slick with the action and comedy elements that he lulls audiences to sleep, entertaining us with events that really should send chills down our spines. So the movie feels rather tasteless when you begin to think about it.

Wahlberg stars as Daniel, an obsessive bodybuilder in 1990s Miami who works as a personal trainer at a local gym. But he's becoming increasingly annoyed by the fact that his clients are much wealthier than he is. So he convinces his steroid-addicted colleague Adrian (Mackie) to help him kidnap a customer (Shalhoub) and steal his fortune. Realising that they need some help, they enlist born-again ex-con Paul (Johnson) in their plan. But none of them is very smart, and the kidnapping goes badly wrong from the start. Still, they manage to steal quite a lot before a tenacious private detective (Harris) notices something isn't right.

For a story that deals with such intensely serious themes, this is an oddly broad comedy. Bay never even tries to find dark irony here; he just focusses on how stupid these criminals are, convinced that they are as cool as the characters from their favourite movies and eerily unbothered by the fact that they are inflicting pain and even death on people for their own greedy ends. The actors inhabit the roles with a disarming naivete, so we can't help but laugh at their idiotic actions. Wahlberg plays Daniel as a muscle-head so focussed on getting what he wants that he doesn't notice the carnage in his wake; Mackie at least gives Adrian a sense of self-doubt, plus some comical romance (with scene-stealer Wilson); and Johnson has a tricky role as a religious guy with a weakness for drugs and women.

Franklin Franklin is a wig-donning, Swiss wannabe loner who lives alone in a small apartment having previously lived with his mentally deranged brother Bernard. He's not the only eccentric character at the complex, however; his wacky neighbours include the Liquor store worker Tommy Balls, Tommy's herpes ridden girlfriend Rocky, the beautiful Simone and the ill-tempered Mr. Allspice. One day, Franklin finds himself in a spot of bother when he accidentally murders his landlord Mr. Olivetti when he pays him a visit about the rent (of lack of it). In an attempt to cover up the homicide, he clumsily stages it as a suicide, which the cops become very suspicious of. Things don't get any easier either, as his Franklin's brother dies suddenly from a brain tumour and he ends up getting badly beaten in the street. Will Franklin find that future that he dreams of? Or will his tedious life gradually spiral further out of control?

Daniel Lugo is a former criminal whose passion lies in his love for fitness and bodybuilding. When he is hired at the particularly notorious Sun Gym in Florida - a place where the pressure is on to get as big as possible, and where steroids are for sale in the locker rooms - he finds enjoyment there initially before deciding that his low wage wasn't worth it and sets out to organise a criminal method of gaining fortune and fame. He teams up with part-time gym worker Adrian Doorbal and another bodybuilder and former criminal Paul Doyle to set up a plan of extortion and kidnapping against another man, Victor Kershaw, who also has a criminal past. Despite Daniel promising Paul that there would be no-one harmed in their plot to take ownership of all Kershaw's assets, things get out of hand, people end up murdered and they find themselves on the run from the police led by detective Ed Du Bois.

'Pain & Gain' is an action comedy directed by Michael Bay ('Bad Boys', 'Pearl Harbor', 'Transformers') and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely ('The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'). Rebel Wilson Confirmed As MTV Movie Awards 2013 Host

Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson has been confirmed to host the MTV Movie Awards, as the event’s bosses continue to use comic foils to emcee their annual bash.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Wilson will be hosting the awards for her first time, and will be the first female to host it since Sarah Silverman in 2007. The show has a hit and miss history of hosts, with Jessica Alba proving largely uninspiring in 2006. Lest we forget that Lindsay Lohan also guest hosted one year, in 2004, however she was from the wayward star that she is today.

The news that Wilson was to host the awards came during a first look trailer that aired during the Jersey Shore finale. A relatively recent name to come to the fore of the acting world, her biggest roles came in Bachelorette and this year’s Pitch Perfect, for which she was nominated for a handful of low key awards. She also gave a voice over performance in Ice Age: Continental Drift and appears in the Michael Bay-directed Pain & Gain next year. Andy Samberg, Aziz Ansari, Jason Sudeikis, and Russell Brand are among the other recent hosts of the event, which is traditionally one of the biggest in the MTV awards calendar.

'Pain And Gain' Trailer Released: Preview Of Michael Bay Movie Hits The Web

Michael Bay Mark Wahlberg Dwayne Johnson Anthony Mackie Christopher Markus Stephen McFeely Ed Harris Rebel Wilson

Michael Bay’s going back to what he does best with his latest movie Pain & Gain. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson (‘The Rock’) and Anthony Mackie, the movie finds the director finally unleashed from the world of Transformers and back into a world of action movies and dark humour.

Pain and Gain tells the tale of a ‘gym rat’ who finds himself discontented with his life and plots to steal from a corrupt businessman, with the help of two fellow weight-lifting buddies. The trailer looks pretty neat, a fine blend of action and a sharp comic strip. Oh and Mark Wahlberg, looking distinctly beefy in his role as Daniel Lugo, the frustrated fitness freak. Pain & Gain is based on the story of the Sun Gym Gang - three guys who “robbed and extorted their way around southern Florida in the mid-90s", according to Empire online and the script appears to have been deftly handles by the Chronicles Of Narnia’s Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The story was originally reported on by the Miami New Times journalist Pete Collins, back in 1999. Now, their tale gets the big budget Hollywood treatment, courtesy of Bay.

Also starring Ed Harris and Rebel Wilson, the movie is scheduled for release in April 2013 in the US and May 2013 in the UK. Prepare yourselves for a great deal of hype between now and then!

Pitch Perfect Review

Essential

You can call this Glee meets Mean Girls if you want to, but this riotously intelligent comedy is much better than that. With one of the funniest scripts of the year, the film keeps us laughing all the way through, never running out of witty gags even when the rather predictable plot kicks into gear. But then, we never really care where the story's going when getting there is this much fun. And honestly, we never want this movie to end.

Anna Kendrick stars as Beca, a young woman who would rather mix mash-up tracks than attend a boring university. But here she is, so she decides to make a go of it by getting a job at the student radio station and joining the women's competitive a cappella group, the Bellas. But control-freak leader Aubrey (Camp) is annoyed to have the snarky Beca in her group, to say nothing of self-named Fat Amy (Wilson). Meanwhile, Beca's colleague at the radio station, Jesse (Astin), joins the champion male group the Troublemakers, led by the arrogant Bumper (DeVine). But as Beca and Jesse start to become friends, they risk running afoul of Aubrey's only rule: Bellas cannot date Troublemakers.

This rom-com plot isn't the focus of the film, nor is the impending a cappella championship, which we know from the start will be a showdown between the two groups. No, the focus is on the individual journeys of the characters, and even the smallest side characters are given space in which to grow on us. They're also brilliantly well-played by the entire cast, anchored by a solid, surprisingly layered turn from Kendrick. But the film's real scene-stealers are Banks and Higgins as competition commentators who reel off snappy jokes with such blinding speed that we can barely breathe whenever they're on screen.

Bachelorette Review

Good
It's easy to see this comical romp as Bridesmaids meets The Hangover, but there's a bit more to it than that. It's a genuinely silly film with a rather simple plot, as three women try to accomplish something urgent while impaired by alcohol, drugs and romance. But it's goofy enough to keep us laughing.

The trio in question are Dunst, Fisher and Caplan, high school friends who reunite in New York as bridesmaids for Becky (a cleverly against-type Wilson), a girl none of them ever really liked. On the night before the marriage, they're goofing around with Becky's rather large wedding dress, and they tear it. So now they have one long night to get it repaired. Along the way, they run into the stag night for Becky's groom (MacArthur) and his chucklehead friends (Scott, Marsden and Bornheimer).

A Few Best Men Review

OK
Anyone who has seen either film version of Craig's previous script Death at a Funeral will immediately recognise the approach: madcap chaos at a family rite of passage. For a late-night screening when you definitely don't want to engage your brain, this approach might just keep you laughing. But sober audiences looking for an enjoyable comedy should steer clear.

At the centre are a blandly likeable couple, British David (Samuel) and Aussie Mia (Brent), who decide to get married. On the day before the wedding, David heads from London to Sydney with his three idiot friends: prankster Tom (Marshall), creepy Graham (Bishop) and the deeply depressed Luke (Draxl). While David meets Mia's establishment parents (Newton-John and Biggins) and rebellious sister (Wilson), his groomsmen get entangled with a seedy drug dealer (Le Marquand). Will they be able to sort out the mess before the marriage ceremony?

Pitch Perfect Trailer

Beca is a fairly aloof music lover who arrives at Barden University as a freshman apathetically unable to fit into any sort of clique on campus. She is approached by the leaders of an a capella girls singing group, The Bellas, who ask her if she would like to join. Beca declines insisting that she doesn't sing, however she is soon discovered by one of the leaders whilst she belts out some tunes in the shower and is almost forcibly dragged onto the team. The singing group turns out to be an odd mix of weird kids, mean ones and dumb but nice girls who all create the most amazing sound when bundled together for a song session; Beca fits into the diversity pretty easily. The group set out to compete against their counterparts, a formidable male singing group, in a college contest.

On David's return from his holiday, he announces to his friends Tom, Graham and Luke that he has met someone and is engaged to be married. They are shocked and not altogether happy about it but agree to give David a day to remember and together travel to Australia where the wedding is to take place. However, with bride-to-be Mia's coke-head mother, her father's transvestite sheep, a gimp mask, a dodgy drug dealer and a catastrophic stag-do, will David and Mia's wedding turn out to be a day they'd rather forget?

This hilarious Australian-British comedy is full of cringe-worthy moments and will most definitely attach a permanent smile to your face as Xavier Samuel ('Twilight: Eclipse'), Kris Marshall ('My Family', 'Love Actually'), Kevin Bishop ('The Kevin Bishop Show') and Tim Draxl ('Swimming Upstream') entertain you with all manner of disasters and misadventures.

The film is directed by Stephan Elliott ('Easy Virtue', 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert') and written by Dean Craig ('Death at a Funeral'). It is to be released on August 31st.

Starring: Xavier Samuel, Kris Marshall, Kevin Bishop, Tim Draxl, David Sullivan, Laura Brent, Olivia Newton-John, Rebel Wilson, Steve Le Marquand and Angela Bishop

Director: Stephan Elliott
