'Big Little Lies': The Critics Consensus Has Been Less Than Positive

Reese Witherspoon Nicole Kidman Shailene Woodley

It's not everyday you see top Hollywood stars the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman band together for a TV drama, but that's what made the prospect of HBO's 'Big Little Lies' all the more exciting. Unfortunately, the story itself has on the whole proved rather mediocre.

Reese WitherspoonReese Witherspoon stars in 'Big Little Lies'

Based on the 2014 best-selling Liane Moriarty novel of the same name, this 7-episode mini-series seems to be something of a disappointment to the general consensus of critics. It's about a trio of Californian housewives whose children all go to the same elementary school, with their personal lives intertwining and culminating in disaster.

Very Good

The quality of the animation in this musical comedy may not be up to Pixar standards, but the story and characters are thoroughly endearing. And the music is fabulous. As it follows a group of likeable animals through a variety of plots and adventures, there's plenty for everyone in the audience to connect with. So even if the climactic action mayhem gets a bit ridiculous, the movie keeps us laughing. And it also makes us want to get up on that stage and belt out a few numbers.

It's set in a city populated by animals. Buster (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) is a koala who has been obsessed with musical theatre since he saw the diva Nana (Jennifer Hudson then Jennifer Saunders) perform when he was a child. So he grew up and bought the theatre. Now with audiences waning, he stages a musical competition to save the theatre. In the auditions, he selects his finalists: anarchist porcupine Ash (Scarlett Johansson), jazzy mafioso mouse Mike (Seth MacFarlane) and silky voiced gorilla Johnny (Taron Egerton). He also teams up two pigs as a double-act: frazzled housewife Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) and German dancer Gunter (Nick Kroll). There's also golden-voiced elephant Meena (Tori Kelly), who's too shy to face the audience so takes a role backstage. Of course, nothing goes as planned.

The key conflict comes from Buster's frantic efforts to avoid bankruptcy, plus rather half-hearted action subplots involving a gang of bears and Johnny's criminally minded relatives. These generate quite a bit of tension that erupts into rather outrageously destructive slapstick along the way. More interesting are the personal journeys of the various contestants, especially as Ash, Meena and Johnny all discover their voices and Rosita finds inventive ways to balance her long-lost career with her role as a mother to 25 rambunctious piglets. Yes, the film is rather crowded with characters and storylines, and the animation looks plasticky, but everything comes together cleverly,

He's a private investigator who is forced to take on his ex-girlfriend Shasta's case when her new boyfriend Mickey Wolfmann becomes embroiled in a kidnapping plot by his scheming wife Sloane and her secret lover.

Devil's Knot Review

Very Good

Based on the events documented in West of Memphis and the Paradise Lost trilogy, this drama takes an almost clinical approach to the story. By filling in so many details and covering so many perspectives, skilled Canadian director Atom Egoyan sometimes loses the emotional connection, simply because there are too many punches to the gut. But it's utterly riveting.

The events took place in 1993 in rural West Memphis, Arkansas. After three 8-year-old boys go missing, suspicion immediately falls on four goth 16-year-olds: Chris (Dane DeHaan) has just left town, but the fiercely charismatic Damien (James Hamrick), hapless Jason (Seth Meriwether) and mentally disabled Jesse (Kristopher Higgens) are arrested and charged with murder. The victims' parents (including Reese Witherspoon, Alessandro Nivola and Kevin Durand) band together in outrage. But private investigator Ron (Colin Firth) thinks the police have wrongly accused these teens of being killers.

The story is a shocking account of a miscarriage of justice, as the community turns on kids who simply look a bit funny and the police and judicial authorities refuse to admit that they may have made some serious mistakes. The rush to judgement is terrifying, accompanied with explanations that falsely link the teens to satanic rituals and death-metal music. Egoyan cleverly builds a sense of outrage from the start, as the film mourns not only the young boys' death but also the horror of carelessly ruining three innocent teens' lives in response.

Devil's Knot Trailer

Devil's Knot is a biographical thriller drama based on the events of the West Memphis Three case directed by Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Chloe) and written by Paul Harris Boardman and Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose).

Devil's Knot tells the chilling story of three young boys, Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore, going missing in the town of West Memphis, Arkansas. When the bodies are found beaten and murdered, the police and religious people of the town put the blame to a group of teenagers they believed to be Satanists, due to the dark nature of their appearance. After police investigation, three young adults, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., are arrested for suspicion of the crime. These three youths claim to be innocent of the murders, but the citizens of the town want justice for the murdered children and the punishment of the teenagers, innocent or not, seems to be their best answer.

The film will star academy award winner Reese Witherspoon portraying Stevie Branch's distraught mother, Michelle Enos (World War Z, Gangster Squad) as Vicki Hutcheson who was key in the arrest of the teenagers, Academy Award winner Colin Firth as private investigator Ron Lax and Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider Man 2, The Place Beyond the Pines) as Chris Morgan, who was a suspect in the murder case.

Stop Throwing Money At Adam Sandler, He's Officially The Most Overpaid Actor

Adam Sandler Reese Witherspoon Eddie Murphy Steve Carell Nicolas Cage Matt Damon

What we’ve assumed was true for a long time has now been confirmed: Adam Sandler is the most overpaid actor in the world, yielding the least amount of cash for the money he earns. Forbes, who did the maths and put everything into a handy list for everyone to peruse, bestowed the unwanted gong upon Hollywood's so called funnyman. But don’t worry there’s no awards ceremony for an achievement like this, just sarcastic news stories, a few memes and a big bag of Cheese Puffs for the list's #1.

Adam Sandler'Hey Sandler! you stink!' someone might have said once

So let’s look at some numbers: his last three films returned an average of $3.40 for every $1 he was paid. Last year, Natalie Portman earned $42.70 per dollar according to Forbes' most profitable actors list, just to give you some context.

Reese Witherspoon Sees The Funny Side Of Arrest Ordeal As Pal Chelsea Handler Teases Her

Reese Witherspoon Chelsea Handler

Reese Witherspoon laughed off a roasting from Chelsea Handler regarding her recent arrest while picking up an award at the ELLE 20th Annual Women In Hollywood Awards.

The talk show host is not particularly known for biting her tongue about uncomfortable subjects regarding her fellow celebrities, but her Legally Blonde actress pal didn't seem to mind as she chuckled at a joke Handler made about her troubles with the law. 'Personally, as a true friend, my favourite project of hers was an overlooked short film that she made earlier this year', she began at the awards ceremony on Monday (October 21st 2013). 'She plays a very inebriated housewife defending her inebriated husband.'

The quip referred to an incident in April when she and her husband Jim Toth were pulled over in Atlanta because the latter appeared to the cops to be over the legal alcohol limit. The Oscar winning actress, rather than wait in the car as she was told, got out and started hurling abuse at the police officer which ended up with her being arrested for disorderly conduct.

Melissa McCarthy Sports Trench Coat On The Cover Of Elle, Internet In Uproar

Melissa McCarthy Penelope Cruz Reese Witherspoon Naomie Harris Marion Cotillard

Melissa McCarthy is covering this month’s issue of Elle magazine, following a year of career successes. The other five women included in the annual Women in Hollywood issue are Penelope Cruz, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Harris, Shailene Woodley and Marion Cotillard. The problem with this lineup is that, while all of the other women were photographed in form-fitting, rather revealing dresses, crop tops, bodysuits and the like, McCarthy’s cover shows her wearing a bulky trench coat in what is a very “editorial” look, but at the same time, makes it seem like the comedienne is getting a different treatment to her peers because of her size. There are, of course, other problems with the issue as well, such as the fact that only one actress out of the lineup is a woman of colour.

Melissa McCarthy, The Heat Premiere
The trenchcoat does seem to fit in with McCarthy's usual style.

Despite some commenters interpreting it this way, according to McCarthy’s reps, the actress picked out the outfit herself – surely there could be no objection to that. For her part, the actress isn’t offended by the stylistic choice and, in fact, feels delighted to have taken part in the shoot."

Could Ben Affleck Take The Role Of Nick?

The Hollywood Reporter reckons Affleck's got the gig, with Flynn writing the screenplay and Reese Witherspoon and Leslie Dixon producing. It had been originally rumoured that Reece Witherspoon might play Amy as well as produce the movie, but apparently she won't be in front of the camera this time. It is not yet known whether Fincher's adaptation of Gone Girl will follow the choppy backwards-forwards narrative style of the novel, where the plotline is interspersed with extracts from Amy's diary but if his 2011 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remake is anything to go by, it will be a quality piece of faithful filmmaking indeed.

The production team of David Fincher’s upcoming Gone Girl is reportedly courting Ben Affleck for the lead role. The script is based on Gillian Flynn’s eponymous bestseller and the screenplay has been written by Flynn herself.

David Fincher, House of Cards premiere
David Fincher will direct the Gillian Flynn adaptation.

The premise is a classic crime/thriller setup. During a young couple’s five-year anniversary, the wife goes missing. The husband quickly emerges as the prime suspect and is then forced to prove his innocence and, of course, find his wife. Affleck might be signing on for the part of the husband. A bit of background on Affleck’s potential character, Nick Dunne – he is a former writer and current bartender, who leaves behind the disappointments of New York to move with his wife back to his hometown in the Midwest. Rural peace and quiet ensue. Until the disappearance that is. Overall, this sounds like a part right up Affleck’s alley and apparently, it is only the potential for scheduling conflicts that is still holding back the actor.

Very Good

Writer-director Nichols continues to get inside the heads of his characters with this involving but overlong dramatic thriller. Like his previous film Take Shelter, this is another fable-like movie, this time harking back to Huck Finn with a boys' adventure story set on the waterways of rural Arkansas. It's impeccably shot and edited, with terrific performances even from side characters. But at over two hours, the long running-time tries our patience.

Our hero is Ellis (Sheridan), a shy but steely 14-year-old who dreams of one day escaping his backwoods community. For entertainment, he explores the rivers with his pal Neckbone (Lofland), and when they hear rumours of a boat stranded in a tree, they have to investigate. Sure enough, there it is, then inside it they discover the fugitive Mud (McConaughey). Even though he's wanted for murder, they decide to help free the boat so he can escape with his battered girlfriend Juniper (Witherspoon), who's hiding in a local motel. But Ellis and Neckbone need some help with this elaborate plan, so they turn to the scary old man (Shepard) who lives across the river.

Cinematographer Adam Stone beautifully captures both the evocative settings and the expressive faces of the actors, who all bring an introspective touch to their characters. Sheridan and Lofland are excellent in the lead roles, which are pretty demanding as these two teens have to grow up quickly. And McConaughey and Witherspoon dive fully into their much flashier roles, constantly surprising us with sparky details that take these people in unexpected directions. There's also a telling smaller role for Nichols' regular Shannon as Neckbone's haunted, sidelined guardian.

A Fourth Video Of Reese Witherspoon's Arrest Made Public

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon shocked just about everyone last month when the seemingly golden girl of Hollywood was arrested for disorderly conduct following a confrontation with police whilst her husband, Jim Toth, was being cited for drunk driving. Anyway some good news did come out of the whole fiasco in the end; it was filmed and now the the whole scenario is available to watch online thanks to TMZ.

The celebrity gossip site published three videos of the incident on Thursday (May 2) and a fourth on Friday (May 3), with the latest one not featuring the Oscar-winning actress in the flesh, but making her various comments to the police very easy to hear. After Witherspoon argues with the cop, name-dropping herself in an attempt to get out of trouble a few times, the dashboard camera-filmed clip features a heated exchange between Witherspoon and Toth, with the actress questioning why her husband is even being arrested in the first place. She says, "I'm an American citizen, I can say whatever I want to on free ground. He does not have jurisdiction over the ground he speaks on. He does not. I'm allowed to say anything I want to say."

Reese Witherspoon's Arrest Video: The Five Cringiest Moments [Video]

Reese Witherspoon

A new video of Reese Witherspoon's arrest in Georgia has been released online, much to the delight of internet users. In a cringe worthy clip from start to finish, Witherspoon is seen being handcuffed and arrested after arguing with police who had begun questioning her husband Jim Toth for DUI.

The footage - which the police insist they did not leak - shows the Oscar winner getting out of her car to defend her husband only to be apprehended by officers. Here's the five cringiest moments:

1. "I'm a US citizen and I am allowed to stand on American ground and ask any question I want to ask." HAHA. Yep, Witherspoon actually said she was allowed to stand on American ground and ask any question she wanted.

Why Did Reese Witherspoon Tell Cops She Was Pregnant?

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon has dusted herself down and received some pretty sensible PR advice in the wake of her arrest in Atlanta, Georgia earlier this month. The actress spoke out for the first time on the incident during Thursday’s Good Morning America, apologizing profusely while also remaining amiable and reminding audiences that she’s just little old Reese Witherspoon.

“It's one of those nights," Witherspoon told GMA's George Stephanopoulos. “We went out to dinner in Atlanta, had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not. And it's just completely unacceptable. And we are so sorry and embarrassed. And we know better.” Stephanopoulos asked the 37-year-old why she and husband Jim Toth did not opt to call a cab after drinking, though all Witherspoon could offer was “just poor judgement.” The actress shocked her fans when it was reported she had played the celebrity card to get her husband off the hook, asking cops “do you know name?” though she also admitted to Stephanopoulos that she falsely claimed to be pregnant. “I think I've played a lawyer so many times in movies, I think I am a lawyer — and clearly I'm not a lawyer. So, I learned a lot,” she added.

Incidentally, Witherspoon’s next movie is titled The Good Lie, about a Sudanese refugee who is taken in by a straight-talking American woman in their new home in the United States. It hits theaters in December 2013.

"It Will Never Happen Again" - Reese Witherspoon On Her DUI Misfortune

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon might have recently gotten the first blemish on her previously spotless reputation, but she handled it with more grace than your average celebrity. The Legally Blonde actress appeared on Good Morning America to talk about her recent DUI incident, why it happened, how it went down and why she would never do it again. She referred to the whole thing as just “one of those nights”.

“We went out to a restaurant in Atlanta, and we had one too many glasses of wine,” she explained. “We thought we were fine to drive and we were absolutely not, and we are so sorry and just so embarrassed… We know better and we shouldn’t have done that.”

Much like a “don’t drink and drive” public service announcement, the actress admitted that she and her husband should have taken a cab and that they should have known better, Access Hollywood reports. She also appeared to sincerely regret the way she had treated the police officer, who pulled the couple over that night: “I was so disrespectful to him,” the actress said. “I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It’s just unacceptable.”

"I Told Him I Was Pregnant!" Reese Witherspoon Embarrassed Over DUI Incident

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon’s clean-cut reputation took a blow recently when she was arrested for DUI in Atlanta, but in her first interview with the incident – which also saw her husband taken in – she did her best get her image back on track by admitting full responsibility for her action.

Talking to Good Morning America, Witherspoon commented "It's one of those nights. We went out to dinner in Atlanta, had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not. And it's just completely unacceptable. And we are so sorry and embarrassed. And we know better." However she wasn’t let off the hook easily; it was reported she’d asked the cop taking them down if he knew who she was, but when that was put to her in the interview she commented “I have no idea what I was saying that night. I saw him arresting my husband and I literally panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I told him I was pregnant. I'm not pregnant! I said crazy things … I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better."

Witherspoon also said that she’d called up the police since to personally apologize, while also admitted it was embarrassing telling her children about the incident. Sounds like a lesson definitely learnt then. "There were so many lessons learned. Absolutely” she said. “When a police officer tells you to stay in the car, you stay in the car. I think I've played a lawyer so many times in movies, I think I am a lawyer — and clearly I'm not a lawyer. So, I learned a lot." Indeed Rees, real life is not like a movie.

Reese Witherspoon Arrested, Pulls Out 'Do You Know Who I Am?' Line

Reese Witherspoon Charlie Sheen Chace Crawford Nicolas Cage

"Do you know who I am?" It's the quote that has left celebrities cringing and police officers grinning with delight over the years. Reese Witherspoon is the latest Hollywood A-lister to use the immortal phrase (almost) before her arrest for DUI in Atlanta early on Friday morning (April 19, 2013). Cops told TMZ.com that  they spotted Reese and husband Jim Toth's car, a silver Ford Fusion, weaving in and out of lanes, pulling them over shortly afterwards.

Much to the delight of the arresting officer, and the millions reading gossip blogs in the subsequent days, Reese pulled out the celebrity card. As officers dealt with Jim, Witherspoon asked one cop, "Do you know my name?" The officer answered by saying, "No, I don't need to know your name." The Oscar-winner came back with, "You're about to find out who I am. You are going to be on national news." Of course, it was Reese that ended up on the news, having been arrested and told to attend a court hearing in Atlanta on May 22, 2013.

The actress released a statement apologizing for her behaviour. "Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said," she said, adding, "It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that was no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behaviour."

Stevie Nicks Extinguishes Reese Witherspoon's Chances Of Playing Her

Reese Witherspoon Fleetwood Mac Lindsay Lohan

Stevie Nicks appears to have shot down any chance Reese Witherspoon had of playing her in a movie biopic, branding the Oscar winner "too old" to play her. Witherspoon has mentioned as a possible casting choice for a planned movie about Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, but the legendary singer says her days after numbered. "I've already told her she's almost too old," the singer told ET Canada at the Toronto premiere of her new documentary In Your Dreams.

It appears Witherspoon might be of the same opinion, "I love her, but she's like, 'I could play your mother," Nicks recalls. Though the Hollywood actress is just 37, a movie about the Fleetwood Mac singer is likely to focus on her younger years and rise to stardom, which probably would make it a little difficult for Witherspoon to tale the role. Anyway, she's got other things on her plate.

She was snapped on the set of her new movie 'The Good Lie' in Atlanta this week, wearing cowboy boots, a jean skirt and a teal top. The movie is based on the real life story of a young refugee of the Sudanese Civil War who wins a lottery for relocation to the U.S with three other boys. He develops an unlikely friendship  with a brash American woman assigned to help him, though struggles to adjust to the modern world and feels guilty about the brother he left behind in war-torn Sudan.

Mud is a man who has been hiding from a group of bounty hunters who have been hired by the family of a man he murdered in Texas for attempting to steal his beautiful girlfriend Juniper. The boys are sympathetic and captivated by him and agree to help him mend the boat while he makes plans to meet Juniper, who is hiding out in a motel, and run away with her. Things don't go as smoothly as planned and deceptions and suspicion causes tensions to rise between Mud, Juniper and the boys.

Celebrities Create Video Appeal For Increased Gun Regulation

Beyonce Knowles Jamie Foxx Amy Poehler Reese Witherspoon

In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, a number of Hollywood celebrities have banded together to create the “Demand a Plan” video, which urges politicians to take decisive action against gun violence and the public to demand said action from their representatives.

The video for demand a plan features a number of A-listers, including Beyonce Knowles, Amy Poehler, John Hamm, Elen DeGeneres and Reese Witherspoon among many others. The video is part of a larger effort to bring about increased gun control in the US. Another part of the campaign is a petition, available to sign at demandaplan.com, which demands the imposition of a criminal background check for every gun, sold in America, a total ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as the criminalization of gun trafficking.

Among those advocating the changes is actor Jamie Foxx, who has recently been very vocal with his opinions about violence and the media’s influence. All of this will come into play in the heated debate for and against increased gun regulation, with the other key player in all this being the now infamous NRA or National Rifle Association, advocating for the right to bear arms as a “means of self defense” and constitutional right. The association hasn’t clarified what kind of situation warrants the use of assault rifles. President Obama is yet to take any stance on the matter, despite continued appeals from both sides of the debate.

'Demand A Plan' PSA: Hollywood's Biggest Stars Unite Against Gun Violence

Beyonce Knowles Will Ferrell Reese Witherspoon Jamie Foxx Jessica Alba Zooey Deschanel John Legend

On the same day that the NRA calls for there to be armed guards at all schools, celebrities have come together to film a campaign video for 'Demand a Plan', which asks the government to do just that- come up with a plan to tackle the national epidemic of gun violence. The plan that the NRA offers is definitely not the answer that these celebs are after.

As stars, including Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and John Legend, among many more, speak the names of cities, and the names of places, they also ask their core question: How many more? Fundamentally, there can't be any more, enough is enough. And this is precisely why they are demanding a plan. The video- which you can see below- is linked to the Demand a Plan website, the homepage of which has three main requests:

1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America

Which State Did Reese Witherspoon Name Her Child After?

Reese Witherspoon Ryan Phillippe Casey Affleck Summer Phoenix RYAN SHAWHUGHES Ethan Hawke

Reese Witherspoon’s baby boy has finally arrived, though anticipation has been building for an announcement on the little guy’s name. The actress and husband Jim Toth finally announced the news late on Thursday, introducing ‘Tennessee James’, reports Reuters.

Young Tennessee joins Witherspoon’s two older children, Ava, 12, and son Deacon, 9, from her first marriage to Ryan Phillippe. Resse and Jim’s spokesman Meredith O’Sullivan Wasson said in a statement, “Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth welcomed Tennessee James into their family today. Both mom and baby are healthy and the entire family is thrilled.” The ‘Legally Blonde’ actress married talent agent Toth at her ranch in California in March this year. The reasons for her choice of name for her latest child are obvious – the 36-year-old grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and has always kept a keen hold on her heritage throughout her career in Hollywood. She won an Oscar in 2005 for her work on the country music film ‘Walk The Line’.

Naming babies after states seems to becoming ever more popular. Actor Casey Affleck and his wife Summer Phoenix (actor Joaquin’s sister) welcomed their son ‘Indiana’ in 2004. Ethan Hawke and wife RYAN SHAWHUGHES opted for the same name when their baby daughter arrived in 2011.

Reese Witherspoon Names Baby Tennessee James Toth

Reese Witherspoon Ryan Phillippe Melanie Griffith Don Johnson Joaquin Phoenix

Reese Witherspoon has named her new baby boy Tennessee James, reports The Huffington Post. He was born yesterday (September 27th).

The 36-year-old's third child is guaranteed a shot at acting with a name like that. Witherspoon already has two little ones from her previous marriage with Ryan Phillippe; Ava, 12, and Deacon, 8. Linda Rosenkrantz, co-founder of Nameberry.com, has some explanations behind naming techniques employed by parents. "It's a trend that had its roots starting in the late 1980s," she said," with several celebs picking names from the American West, like Austin, Dallas and Dakota, including Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, whose now grown daughter Dakota is the star of a new sitcom. But lately the trend seems to be heating up and much more widespread." Celebrities seem to be obsessed with choosing never-heard-before names for their offspring, and are looking far and wide for names that fit the bill: "The current trend seems to be really exotic-sounding spots, like Morocco, Egypt and Asia, and states rather than countries or cities -- Alabama, Arizona, Indiana and yes, Tennessee."

Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon made her name in 2001, with her breakout role as Elle Woods in the box office hit Legally Blonde, after bagging a Golden Globe nomination for the critically acclaimed Election. She also garnered critical praise for her performance in Walk The Line alongside Joaquin Phoenix.

This Means War Review

Very Good
A lively pace and a nicely warped sense of humour help make this paper-thin action-comedy a mindlessly enjoyable romp. Sure, the central romantic triangle never really gels, but the bromance subplot is rather sweet.

Frank (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy) are best-pal CIA operatives who wouldn't know the word "subtle" if it clubbed them over the head. After a chaotic case in Hong Kong, they're grounded back home in L.A., and both decide to use the down time to find women. The problem is that they find the same woman, Lauren (Witherspoon), who struggles to decide which one is right for her. Certainly her married best pal Trish (Handler) is no help. The bigger problem is that Frank and Tuck use the agency's resources to sabotage each other.

Rendition Review

Good
About halfway through Gavin Hood's Rendition, Peter Sarsgaard's dweeby congressman's assistant approaches Meryl Streep's white witch of the CIA with enough huff-and-puff to blow down a Dairy Queen. The two ideological opposites go at it with crisp, cool reverie: He promises to send her a copy of the Constitution while she promises him that a copy of the 9/11 Report will be arrive in his mailbox posthaste. It's sloganeering at its finest and that's not the half of it.

CIA watchdog Corrine Whitman (Streep) sets up the titular protocol when evidence is uncovered against Chicago family man and chemical engineer Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally), Egyptian by birth. Whitman suspects that El-Ibrahimi had a hand in a recent bombing of an unnamed North African tea house; an attempt on the life of North African security head Fawal (Igal Naor). Fawal heads the "interrogation" with CIA analyst Douglas Freeman (Jake Gyllenhaal) there as counsel while they electrocute, drown, beat, and strangle Anwar to give up information on the attack.

The Importance Of Being Earnest (2002) Review

Excellent
The Importance of Being Earnest is a sharp, humorous look at the duality of romance and the fear of commitment, served up on a delicate and witty plate in this summer season of comic book heroism and galactic space battles.

The story revolves around two dashing English gentlemen in the 1890s - John "Jack" Worthing (Colin Firth) and Algy Moncrieff (Rupert Everett) - and their trials and tribulations in the games of love and marriage under the moniker of Ernest. Jack spends his days watching over his bookish charge Cecily Cardew (Reese Witherspoon) - the granddaughter of his adopted father - at his country estate. When his restless spirit calls for adventure, he travels to London and visits his wayward city brother "Ernest." In London, Jack becomes "Ernest" and partakes in decadence with his affluent but reckless best friend Algy and ends up madly in love with Algy's sophisticated society cousin Gwendolen Fairfax (Frances O'Connor) - who has a strange love for the name of "Ernest."

Sweet Home Alabama Review

OK

Making only a minimal effort to be any different or better than the hundreds of other forgettable, predictable, almost-married-the-wrong-guy romantic comedies that have come before it, "Sweet Home Alabama" has the benefit of a talented, appealing cast and the burden of being entirely dependent on clichés to drive its story.

Reese Witherspoon stars as Melanie Carmichael, a rising-star designer in New York's fashion world who is downright giddy about her new engagement to the political mover-and-shaker son (Patrick Dempsey) of the city's image-conscious mayor (Candice Bergen). In the movie's most romantic scene, Mr. Wonderful proposes by getting down on one knee at Tiffany's, which he's arranged to stay open after hours, and telling her to pick any ring she wants.

But there's one little wrinkle Melanie's fiancé doesn't know about: Before she can marry him, she'll have to divorce her hayseed childhood sweetheart back in small-town Alabama. A handsome, blue-eyed charmer named Jake (Josh Lucas, "A Beautiful Mind") with a playful Paul Newman smirk, she did nothing but fight with him once the magic wore off their relationship, so Melanie bailed out to follow her ambition.

Little Nicky Review

Terrible

Having now seen "Little Nicky," in which Adam Sandler plays the retarded son of Satan, I have formulated a hypothesis I'm calling the Sandler Theory of Exponentially Obnoxious Returns. It goes something like this:

Adam Sandler goes out of his way to make each gimmick character he plays ("Billy Madison," "Happy Gilmore") more grating than the last, just to see how far he can push it before his easily amused fan base will turn on him.

His most detestable character to date had been "The Waterboy," but that Southern-fried dope was mister congeniality compared to Nicky, the little devil that couldn't. Sandler spends this entire movie with his face screwed up in a hit-by-a-shovel grimace and speaking in a silly, raspy voice like a little kid pretending to be sick so he can stay home from school. There's no joke here. It's just Sandler's version of stretching as an actor.
