'Star Wars' Episode VIII Director Promises "Darker Tone"

Rian Johnson

'The Last Jedi' certainly sounds like one of the more ominous 'Star Wars' films in the episodic collection, and new comments from the movie's director Rian Johnson hint that the flick will certainly be headed in a darker direction than those that have come before it.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, the director teased: "This is the second movie in the trilogy, so it’s easy to draw parallels to 'Empire' in terms of a darker feel. And we do dig into the characters: we’re going to challenge them and things are gonna get tough for everybody. But I didn’t want this to go too dark. One of the things I drew from J.J.’s film was that sense of fun and playfulness – that as much Star Wars as ‘I am your father'."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer

After the release of The Force Awakens at the end of 2015, Disney and Lucas films didn't mess around delivering the general public its first announcement/teaser for The Last Jedi back at the start of 2016. Now, well over a year later, we finally get to see some proper footage from the upcoming movie.

Many of the key cast from Star Wars: The Force Awakens will feature in The Last Jedi including Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren who famously slaughtered his much-loved father in a face to face battle that made for one of the most pivotal scenes in the history of Star Wars.

As ever with new Star Wars releases, the scrip and the story outline is one of Hollywood's most closely guarded secrets and few official details have been released to the public. We do know that the story will pick up where The Force Awakens ended with Rey going off into a mountainous setting to hunt down Luke Skywalker in a bid to train with him and learn his knowledge.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at a screening of his new movie Midnight Special on Monday night (March 28th), Driver joked: “They’re still at war. It’s still Star Wars, they’re not at peace.”

Set for release on December 15th 2017, Star Wars Episode VIII is currently filming but hasn’t yet got an official title. Much talk has been about who is to replace Han Solo, but there are changes behind the camera as well as in front of it, with Johnson taking over the direction from J.J. Abrams.

May The Force Be With Him! But Who Is Star Wars Episode VIII Director Rian Johnson?

Rian Johnson Star Wars Jj Abrams Harrison Ford

In the latest round of Star Wars news, Rian Johnson is said to be directing Episode VIII, ie the one that comes after the one that Jj Abrams is currently filming. According to Deadline the director will be taking the reins after Abrams and will then go on to script the third instalment Episode IX. For some ,the appointment of Johnson is an interesting and welcome curveball from the Star Wars team, but for those of us not too up on who’s hot in the directing world the announcement was met with a resounding, who? So if you’re finding yourself in the latter category let’s get to know Mr Johnson a little bit better before he takes on his most important directing gig yet and undoubtedly becomes a household name.

Rian JohnsonMeet Rian Johnson, the next Star Wars director

Born in Maryland but raised in California, 40 year old Rian Johnson counts Annie Hall as his movie making inspiration. After attending the University of Southern California and then graduating from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Johnson made his directorial debut in 1996 with the short film, Evil Demon Golfball from Hell!!! Loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart, the 8 minute short featured a man tormented by a golf ball. Johnson then followed up with two more short films, Ben Boyer and the Phenomenology of Automobile Branding and The Psychology of Dream Analysis.

What You Need To Know About Rian Johnson's Star Wars Appointment

Star Wars Rian Johnson Jj Abrams

We don’t get many leftfield directorial appointments in the world of movies, so Rian Johnson’s Star Wars nod really is something to savour. Johnson will direct Star Wars Episode VIII, and word on the street is that he’ll be working Episode IX, too.

Rian Johnson Rian Johnson big pressure on his hands with two Star Wars movies to direct

The reaction to Disney and LucasFilm’s decision has been reasonably muted, which should be taken as a positive sign for Johnson. He has a short but impressive CV, including the highly celebrated Brick, his excellent work on the complex, intricate sci-fi thriller Looper and of course, three episodes of Breaking Bad – The Fly, Fifty-One and Ozymandias.

Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s ‘Looper’ The Best Movie Of The Year?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Bruce Willis Rian Johnson

The Looper reviews are in, and it’s great news for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and director Rian Johnson. The futuristic action thriller is set in a world where time travel is invented, though illegal and only available through the black market. OK, so before you start making Inception comparisons… read on.

Gordon-Levitt – now considered one of Hollywood’s leading men – plays a hired gun who ‘takes care’ of men that the mob send back 30 years-old in time. His character is more than happy making quick-cash, until the mob decide to “close the loop” and send his future-self (played by Willis) back for assassination. Frankly, it’s a hugely intriguing concept and even the harshest critics were blown away by the movie. Roger Ebert said Looper “weaves between past and present in a way that gives Johnson and his actors opportunities to create a surprisingly involving narrative,” while Tom Huddleston of Time Out magazine said, “This is a hugely satisfying, enjoyable and thought-provoking piece of work.”

‘Looper’ currently holds a 94% approval rating on review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes (with 97% audience approval). That’s 10% more than Oscar-tipped ‘The Master’ and 7% more than ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. Whether its percentage score will decrease as more opinions flood in remains to be seen, though one thing’s for sure: Looper could be the surprise hit of 2012.
