The Jessie's Girl star was approached by director Jonathan Demme to play a guitarist in Streep's onscreen band, and although Springfield was thrilled at the prospect of working with the two Oscar winners, he initially decided to pass on the opportunity.

He explains, "I was very excited, but they wanted to see me the next day (in Los Angeles). I was on the East Coast, I was playing, touring, and... I said, 'There's no way I'm gonna prepare a decent scene, and I don't wanna look like an idiot in front of Jonathan Demme, so I'm not gonna go.'

"My pitbull of a PR girl... said, 'You get your a** on that plane and you go to that audition.'"

Springfield did as he was told and he was surprised when he later learned Demme had been won over within the first 60 seconds of his audition.

The singer/actor adds, "I wish I would have known that! It took them two weeks to tell me and I thought, 'Ah, I'm never gonna get this.'"
