Ricky Gervais

Comedian Ricky Gervais has moved to defend himself after he made a controversial joke about AIDS on Twitter earlier this week, angering a substantial part of social media as it spread.

The 55 year old former star of ‘The Office’ sparked outrage when he answered a popular Twitter meme that asked “things you can say both during sex and during a funeral” by replying with “AIDS?” on Tuesday (June 20th).

Ricky Gervais Defends Himself Over 'Dead Baby' Joke

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais has defended the nature of “offensive jokes” in the aftermath of the complaints of a grieving couple who walked out of his current stand-up show over a controversial joke about a dead baby.

Ryan and Suzi Gourley attended the Belfast leg of Gervais’ latest stand-up tour, titled ‘Humanity’, on Tuesday night (March 28th) – but it was the first night out they had had since their son Eli was stillborn in July last year. Shocked at the content of one of the former ‘Office’ star’s jokes, whose punchline was about a dead baby, they got up and walked out of the auditorium at Waterfront Hall in the Northern Irish capital.

Ricky Gervais Gives David Brent One Last Moment In The Spotlight In 'Life On The Road'

Ricky Gervais

It's been 13 years since audiences had their last glimpse of Ricky Gervais' iconic The Office alter-ego David Brent, and he's now back on the big screen in the mock-doc Life on the Road. Critics have been wondering if Brent's desperation to launch a rock-star career is an echo of Gervais' own ambitions.

Ricky GervaisRicky Gervais brings back David Brent in 'Life On The Road'

The comedian laughs this off. "It's a fake documentary!" he says. "I don't think I'm a pop star. The point is that Brent's been sold a lie. He was told that if you're not performing, you won't be popular. And if you're not popular, then you're nothing."

Gervais sees this as a comment on contemporary society. "People don't think they exist unless they're in the paper or they're trying to be a singer. For Brent, it's a vanity project. But it's really bad. He's a man at his lowest ebb."

Watch the trailer for 'Life On The Road' here:

And he thinks the time is right to revisit this character. "Since The Office we've had The Apprentice," he observes, "where people get on by saying, 'I'll destroy anyone who gets in my way.' So now it's harder, it's more dog-eat-dog. We have Donald Trump saying, 'I'd like to punch that person in the face!' It's like Gordon Gekko has come true: greed is good!"

To promote Life on the Road, Gervais has been touring with his band performing songs from the movie. "This is an album I have created as David Brent," he says. "It is part of that fiction."

Intriguingly, Gervais did have a brush with pop music stardom early in his career with the 1980s new wave group Seona Dancing. "It was all too good to be true," he laughs. "We put a single out and it nearly broke, so we put a second single out and that nearly broke but didn't. And that was our bite of the cherry. It was all over in about six months."

As for The Office, Gervais continues to insist that he will never go back, only forward. "I said I'd never bring back The Office and I won't," he says. "And this isn't that. This is David Brent now, what he's doing now. There might be another spin off - like the soundtrack album and live gigs - so he might pop up now and again. But as a huge big project, a series of David Brent or The Office, or another movie? Probably not."

David Brent: Life On The Road Review

Good

The original BBC sitcom The Office ran for 14 episodes from 2001 to 2003, and now 13 years later Ricky Gervais returns to his iconic character for a follow-up movie. Referring to the original series as a "BBC documentary", David Brent gets a camera crew to follow him as he makes a last-gasp attempt at achieving his dream of being a rock star. But instead of going on a reality show like everyone else, he hires a band and hits the road.

David is now working as a tampon salesman for a firm in Reading, with a chucklehead colleague (Tom Bennett) who gets all his jokes and a coworker (Jo Hartley) who has a soft spot for his idiocy. Now he has decided to take all of his holiday and cash in his retirement fund to reform his band Foregone Conclusion with session musicians as well as rising-star rapper Dom Johnson (Ben Bailey Smith). He hires a tour bus and heads off to a series of gigs in nearby towns, determined to embrace the rock-n-roll lifestyle. But without much promotion, the fans don't quite materialise. And there's tension within the band, mainly because they're all just here for the cash and are annoyed by David's antics.

Of course, everything David does is excruciating. The rambling introductions to his jaw-droppingly inappropriate songs are accompanied by grimaces from his bandmates and the audience. The music is actually quite good, while the lyrics are simply painful (Native American seems like the low point until he kicks into Please Don't Make Fun of the Disabled). David is the only person on screen who doesn't realise how appalling this is. And yet, since the film is written and directed by Gervais himself, there's a strange sense of irony at work here, as if Gervais himself would like to be a rock star, and is using this film as a chance to ignite a side career.

Caitlyn Jenner Hits Back At Ricky Gervais - And Hopes To Replace Him

Caitlyn Jenner Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais insisted earlier this week that his jokes about former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner were not meant to be intentionally transphobic, though that still hasn't convinced a lot of people. As for Caitlyn herself, she only has one thing to say about the whole matter: 'I'm going to replace you'.

Caitlyn JennerCaitlyn Jenner hits back at Ricky Gervais

Well, she didn't put it as bluntly, but it was that sort of dignified answer we've come to expect from her. It was only a matter of time before somebody asked her to address the issue, and they did so only four days after the fiasco yesterday (January 14th 2016) during the Television Critics Association's winter press tour which took place in Pasadena, California.

Ricky Gervais Responds To Criticism Over Caitlyn Jenner Joke At Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais Caitlyn Jenner

Ricky Gervais has a message for those offended by the jokes he made at the 2016 Golden Globes on Sunday, ‘you have every right to be offended, just don't cry when no one cares.’ The comedian made the comments on twitter after referencing the criticism he’d received over jokes made about Caitlyn Jenner, which some had labelled 'transphobic'.

Ricky GervaisRicky Gervais offended plenty as host of the 2016 Golden Globes.

‘Suggesting a joke about Caitlin Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist,’ Gervais tweeted. ‘In the future, everyone will be offended by me for 15 minutes,’ he added. ‘You have every right to be offended. Gervais hosted the ceremony for three years in a row between 2010 and 2012, in a stint that raised ratings and, admittedly, the shock factor for the Golden Globes. Following three years of co-hosting by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, he’ll be coming back for the January 10th show on NBC, and spoke to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the ceremony.

Ricky Gervais's 'Derek' Divides Critics (Again) After Season 2 Premiere

Ricky Gervais Karl Pilkington

Ricky Gervais reintroduced care worker Derek Noakes on Wednesday night (April 23) for a second season of his latest comedy. The show was heavily criticised during season one, with some indignation focusing on Gervais' apparent portrayal of learning difficulties. Derek is a kind man, helpful and selfless with good intentions, though some critics couldn't help but ignore the way in which Gervais played him.

Derek season 2

It appears to be more of the same in terms of criticism for season 2, with The Guardian's Sam Wollaston writing, "That's the biggest problem with Derek. Not, as some have said, that it mocks people with learning difficulties (it's too kind for that, and tries to be sympathetic). Just that it's a very crude portrayal. Gervais's previous characters - David Brent and Andy Millman - are not, I suspect, so very different from RG himself, kind of grotesque caricatures. Here he's trying to be someone else completely, and it's awful."

Ricky Gervais Considering Uncharted Territory: A Third Series Of 'Derek'

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais isn’t a third series kind of guy. ‘The Office’ wrapped up in two seasons followed by a 2-part Christmas special. ‘Extras’ was much the same. ‘Derek’, though, Gervais’ less critically acclaimed but equally popular effort, could be in line for a third outing.

Ricky Gervais

"It's the first time I've ever considered doing a third series of something," said Gervais. "I think I certainly want to do the two series and a special for Derek and then see. I don't want to make TV for the sake of it. You have other ideas and also you don't want to outstay your welcome."

"Muppets: Most Wanted" Isn't Just For Kids, Apparently

Ricky Gervais Ty Burrell Tina Fey

For a kids’ movie, The Muppets: Most Wanted has more than its fair share of decidedly adult jokes. Of course, it’s no surprise that a film starring top tier comedians like Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey would have a few jokes aimed at the grownups.

'The Muppets Most Wanted': On The Road Again

Ricky Gervais

After the surprise success of The Muppets in 2011, first-time British director James Bobin knew making a sequel would present a big challenge. "I thought we needed to make it harder," he says. "So that's what we did: let's make an action comedy musical movie, you know!"

The MuppetsRicky Gervais in The Muppets Most Wanted

The movie sees the Muppets embark on an ambitious world tour, taking in Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London while a nefarious plot unravels around them. As expected, the story is plainly ridiculous, and merely exists to let the Muppets indulge in all kinds of craziness. It also allows for some terrific human actors to join in the fun, including main cast members Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell and a blinding array of cameos from Celine Dion to Tom Hiddleston.

After A Shaky Start, 'Muppets Most Wanted' Strikes A Chord With The Critics

Ricky Gervais The Muppets

It must be difficult to follow 2011’s The Muppets, featuring Amy Adams and Jason Segal in a musical that delighted critics and fans alike. And Muppets Most Wanted certainly fell victim to that pressure early on, but a recent surge of positive reviews have seen the Ricky Gervais-starring film garner a more than respectable average on Rotten Tomatoes.

So far, the critics are divided on Muppets: Most Wanted.

With two days left until the premiere, the movie is already a hit, as far as early reviews are concerned. Without going into too much spoiler-y detail, The Wrap’s review promises self aware jokes and absurdist plot twists – just what we’ve come to expect from the Muppets. It’s not a universal hit – THR’s review is one of a few negative ones, pegging MMW as “an oddly off-key follow-up to the generally amusing 2011 feature”.

Possible David Brent Movie Will Feature Real Departure For Former Paper Merchant

If, and we mean if, David Brent makes his feature debut in a movie, then it won’t be anything to do with the 2-series BBC sitcom that thrust the character into the hallowed ground of legendary status in the U.K.

David Brent Heading On UK Tour With Ex-Razorlight Drummer Is SO David Brent

Ricky Gervais Andy Burrows

While David Brent and Andy Burrow’s musical union isn’t a joke in and of itself – the pair have known each other since Ricky Gervais met Burrow on Jonathon Ross in 2008 – there’s nothing more Brent than coupling with a member of Razorlight. Nothing.

David Brent

Burrows is alright though; he’s got a lovable face and plenty of auburn stubble. And he’s not Johnny Borrell. Combine those things and you’ve got yourself a pretty decent bloke all told. He’s now realising the dream of every 29-year-old man (he’s 34 himself) by playing live with Gervais’s Brent.

David Brent & Foregone Conclusion Deliver The Laughs In First Live Show

Ricky Gervais

It's been almost ten years since David Brent was last on our screens, however Ricky Gervais' most celebrated character still has the potential to draw in one helluva crowd. It took only 15 seconds for tickets to his two shows at London's Bloomsbury Theatre to sell out and needless to say, the anticipation before the first show was at tipping point. The pressure was on Brent and his backing group, Foregone Conclusion, to deliver when they went on stage last night (14 Oct.) and deliver is just what they did.

The 'Learn Guitar with David Brent' series re-launched the comic creation

Gervais reignited interest in Brent when he began uploading 'Learn to Play Guitar with David Brent' videos on to his YouTube page. They were viewed by millions and the humour was roundly praised by fans, prompting record deals, movie offers and concert opportunities to be thrust Gervais' way. But rather than take the offers to release an album and perform at Wembley, Gervais decided to take baby steps first and begin Brent's possible future with two shows in intimate settings, with a second performance taking place at the Bloomsbury later this month.

David Brent Live, Is This Ricky Gervais's Worst Idea Ever?

Ricky Gervais

Having achieved moderate success with the comeback of David Brent, Ricky Gervais has decided to push the envelope even further by putting his seminal creation on the road for live shows.

We say moderate because, in comparison to the remarkable achievement that The Office was, contemporary Brent is nothing above average.

Ricky GervaisIs Gervais a bit of a muppet for extending Brent's lifespan?

Brent's Back: Red Nose Day Delight As Ricky Gervais' Character Returns To Screens

Ricky Gervais

"What's happened in the last 10 years? What hasn't happened in the last 10 years?" David Brent asks in his triumphant return.

To describe Brent as a beloved character of British comedy is something of a fallacy. He's a grotesque caricature of someone we can all recognise. A character we love to hate to love; monstrously irritating, casually racist, sexist but ultimately endearing in his endeavours to do right. He just doesn't quite know what right is.

Now a part time music producer, part time cleaning product salesman, the 10 minute episode that aired on YouTube last night during Comic Relief exhibited Brent at his cringe-tastic best, with hilarious one liners and those uncomfortable moments that go on a little too long. New Brent gems include: "I'm like a local Simon Cowell... better really!", "So can all you lot rap then? Could Trevor McDonald rap if he really had to?" and "I don't look at what things say. I know how they feel."

Escape From Planet Earth Trailer

Scorch Supernova is a highly respected astronaut who also happens to be a brawny blue alien from the planet Baab. While spending his working hours rescuing distressed civilians from various planets, Scorch's intelligent but significantly scrawnier brother Gary guides him from mission control at the national space agency BASA. However, Scorch's strength and bravery is tested when the BASA chief Lena informs him of an SOS call from one extremely dangerous planet. In spite of Gary's strong warnings, Scorch sets out to rescue his fellow alien from whatever danger might be lurking but finds himself trapped and imprisoned by the planet's inhabitants; one of which is the alien-hating Shanker who vows to rid the universe of all alien lifeforms. Gary finds himself landed with a new responsibility; he must now become the rescuer and aid his brother in his escape from the dark planet and with it, secure the future of his own.

Donald Trump Obama 'October Surprise': What Do The Celebs Think?

Donald Trump Barack Obama Jay Leno Ricky Gervais Adam Levine

A special Donald Trump announcement, which saw him promise to donate $5 million to Obama's favourite charity if the president released his college records and passport information, has been met by a less than favourable response from a few choice celebrities.

In a rare moment of genuine wit, which would probably be better applied to some of his music, Adam Levine of Maroon 5 tweeted: "Will someone tell Donald Trump we don't live in Gotham City?" And it was the micro blogging site that proved to be a breeding ground for comic responses to the frankly bizarre request from Trump; ‘The Office’ star Rainn Wilson posted, "I will pay 5 million dollars to see copies of Donald Trump's humility," while her show’s creator, Ricky Gervais tweeted, "I will give $500 to charity if Donald Trump gives up his hairdresser's passport and college records." Singer Josh Groban tweeted, "For Halloween I'm going to be Donald Trump! Gonna comb over my hair and not give 5 million dollars to charity!"

Perhaps the most important commentator on Mr. Trump is Obama himself, who of course was the subject of the odd YouTube upload. "What's this thing with Trump and you?" Leno asked on The Tonight Show, reports The L.A Times. "This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya," Obama responded. "We had constant run-ins on the soccer field. He wasn't very good and resented it. When we finally moved to America, I thought it would be over." We at Contact Music will give $5 to our chosen charity if Donald Trump ever says anything sensible. And that’s a promise.

$24 Million Salary: Ashton Kutcher Tops Forbes' Actors Rich List

Ashton Kutcher Demi Moore Charlie Sheen Steve Carell Ricky Gervais Hugh Laurie Ray Romano Alec Baldwin

Ashton Kutcher has been named TV’s highest paid actor. The Two and a Half Men star may have disgraced himself in the celebrity gossip world, by allegedly cheating on his partner Demi Moore, but in the world of television, he’s still hot property and commands a staggering fee for his appearances in the show.

According to Forbes’ annual survey of the highest paid television actors, Kutcher earned $24 million between May 2011 and May 2012. His predecessor on Two and a Half Men, Charlie Sheen (who left the show in a pretty dramatic fashion after suffering what appeared to be some kind of mental breakdown) did not even make the Top 10. That said, when Sheen was at the top of his game, he out-classed Kutcher significantly, with earnings of $40 million. Sheen wasn’t the only big name star to mysteriously disappear from the Top 10 though. Steve Carell, who proved to be a massive hit on the small screen with the US adaptation of Ricky Gervais’ The Office, also dropped off the list.

Snapping at Kutcher’s heels at the top of the list was Hugh Laurie, who ranked second with $18 million, largely for his role in House. Ray Romano earned an equal amount, and still appears to be raking it in with re-runs of his classic Everybody Loves Raymond comedy. Alec Baldwin’s in next with $15 million, still charming TV audiences with his role in 30 Rock.

Replaced By Tiny Fey And Amy Poehler At The Golden Globes.

Ricky Gervais Amy Poehler

Being dropped from the Golden Globes can't be a nice feeling, especially for a British male, in favour of two American women, whose nationality and gender were already somewhat of a threat. So, it was in maintaining a stiff upper lip (retaining those age old British traditions) that Ricky Gervais gave a statement to EW, saying: “Good luck to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the Golden Globes. After failing three years in a row to make E! Channel's Best Dressed list, I decided to hand over the reins.”

Gervais had hosted the Golden Globes, one of the biggest film award ceremonies in the U.S. However, while his acerbic and astute wit delighted his British audience, often his humour was just a little too far for the Americans who were sometimes merely rendered mute in confusion, or, worst case scenario: really rather offended. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will hopefully not quite make the same mistakes. Everyone speaking on behalf of the Fey/Poehler choices cites “unparalleled comedic timing.” But it seems the choice of Fey and Poehler for 2013 is just as excellent comedic timing, as their role in the Golden Globes is almost a perfect match against Seth MacFarlane as the host for the Oscars just three days after the Golden Globes.

Gervais offered up jokes about scientology in case the girls have some problem with that 'impeccable comedic timing', but he did well not to give advice on their red carpet attire. Clearly he's the first to admit it's not his domain. The Golden Globes will be awarded January 13th 2013.

Golden Globes Hosts Announced; Ricky Gervais Steps Down From Controversial Routine.

Tina Fey Amy Poehler Ricky Gervais

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are to host the Golden Globes this year as a team effort, reports Bloomberg. But should the candid services of Ricky Gervais have been retained? We’re in two minds.

Takla-O'Reilly, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is (obviously) happy with the decision: "The unparalleled comedic timing of Tina and Amy will surely have viewers wanting to tune-in to see them in action," she said. "The HFPA is thrilled to have the magnetic duo be a part of the show's 70th anniversary!" Sure, fine; they’ll be nice and funny, and they won’t offend anyone. But that’s what we’ll miss. Ricky Gervais’ confident, and biting style has become infamous, and it’s something the ceremony will really miss. A classic Golden Ricky Globe was: “Looking at all the wonderful faces here today reminds me of the great work that’s been done this year… by cosmetic surgeons,” he said, to a room of awkward laughter. Perhaps one of his most controversial jokes, though, was this: “I hope I haven’t offended anyone. It’s not my fault [points at his drink]. I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.” Ouch! We thank the Independent for reminding us of those.

"Having both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on board to host this year's festivities is a major coup," said Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming at NBC. "Tina and Amy have a proven chemistry and comedic timing from their many years together on 'SNL' to their successful co-starring roles in 'Baby Mama.'" At least they think dropping The Office star was a good idea. The Globes are set to air Jan. 13, three days before the Oscars.

Video - Ricky Gervais And George Clooney Greet Fans Outside Golden Globes

British comedian and actor Ricky Gervais (The Office; Night At The Museum; The Invention of Lying) and George Clooney (The Descendants; Up In The Air; The Ides Of March) arrive at the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles. Ricky is seen leaving a limo; he waves to the fans before running over and slapping the hands of those on the front row. Later, George does the same, to the delight of the crowd who have assembled.

Ricky hosted the Golden Globes for the third year in a row. In 2011 he caused controversy by offending various Hollwood greats but this year he toned it down, joking about Kim Kardashian's marriage to Kris Humphries and Justin Bieber's paternity test

Brits Julie Christie And Daniel Day-lewis Take Sag Awards

Julie Christie Alec Baldwin Brokeback Mountain Coen Brothers Edie Falco Heath Ledger James Gandolfini NBC Paul Thomas Anderson Ricky Gervais Sarah Polley The Office The Sopranos

British actors Julie Christie and Daniel Day-Lewis have won the top acting prizes at the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) awards.

While Christie took the best actress gong for her acclaimed portrayal of a woman facing dementia in Sarah Polley's Away From Her, Day-Lewis was rewarded for his stunning role as an amoral oil prospector in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood.

Though the awards season has been jeopardised by the ongoing industrial action by the Writers' Guild of America (WGA), the SAG awards were held without a hitch after an interim agreement was signed between the two unions, allowing acting talent to attend the ceremony without having to cross picket lines.

Christie - who is nominated for the best actress Academy award for her part in Away From Her - paid tribute to the SAG, adding to The Associated Press: "It's lovely to receive an award from your own union, especially at a time when we're being so forcefully reminded how important unions are."

And Day-Lewis dedicated his award to the late Heath Ledger, who was tragically found dead in his New York apartment last week.

"In Brokeback Mountain he was unique, he was perfect," Day-Lewis said while accepting his trophy.

"That scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything I think I've ever seen."

The 50-year-old added backstage that he had never met Ledger but had been profoundly affected by the actor's death.

"I thought he was beautiful. I just had a very strong feeling I would have liked him very much as a man," he said. "I admired him very much. I'm absolutely certain he would have done many wonderful things in his life."

Javier Bardem took the best supporting actor prize for his role as psychotic killer Anton Chigurh in the Coen Brothers' No Country For Old Men, which also won the award for outstanding cast in a motion picture.

With The Sopranos finally coming to an end, leads James Gandolfini and Edie Falco claimed the best actor and best actress prizes for TV dramas, while Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey, the stars of NBC's 30 Rock, took the comedy equivalents.

And another NBC series, The Office - an adaptation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's Golden Globe-winning sitcom - won the award for best cast in a comedy programme.
