Speaking about what each generation can learn from the other, De Niro said, “Theres no downside in asking somebody who’s been around a lot longer than you, especially if they've done things that you've done, or in that area.”

“Someone in the theatre or movies asking a person what to look out for, I've done that with people when I was younger especially. It’s a good thing.”

De Niro also added that he enjoys giving advice to those who ask and may even offer some pearls of wisdom if he feels an actor needs some help. “I enjoy giving advice to people if they ask. Or maybe I’ll volunteer it if I really feel they’re going to hit a wall of some sort,” the 72 year old said.

In his latest film, The Intern, De Niro stars opposite Anne Hathaway as a senior citizen who interns at an e-commerce fashion company. But De Niro himself has actually never experienced life as an intern, but says it’s ‘a great thing to do if you're in a position with someone who can be a mentor.’

“I was flattered when she asked me to do because I know she’s very much a stickler for detail," he added. "So I knew she made sure she wanted me before she made that decision and the offer and it made me feel good.”
