The Judge Review

Weak

This generational drama strains so hard to be serious that it's almost laughable. Its big themes are only superficially addressed, while the bloated nearly two and a half hour running time could easily have been cut down simply by eliminating all of the emotive close-ups of actors with tears welling in their eyes. In other words, while there are the bare bones of a decent movie in here, it's been badly compromised to turn it into Oscar bait.

At least it starts well, with a sequence centred on Hank (Robert Downey Jr), a slick Chicago lawyer with a precocious daughter (Emma Tremblay) and an angry trophy wife (Sarah Lancaster) who has had enough. Hank's cold-hearted ways are a legacy of his estranged relationship with his father Joseph (Robert Duvall), the no-nonsense judge in a small-town Indiana town. Then Hank is called home when his mother dies, comforting his brothers Glen (Vincent D'Onofrio), whose injured hand ended his baseball career, and Dale (Jeremy Strong), who is mentally challenged. He also rekindles his youthful romance with waitress Sam (Vera Farmiga). Then Joseph is arrested for murder, and Hank steps in to help inexperienced lawyer CP (Dax Shepard) defend him against the shark-like prosecutor (Billy Bob Thornton).

There isn't a single subtle element in this film, as the script is carefully constructed to pull our sympathies back and forth even though both Hank and Joseph are deeply unlikeable grumps. Downey and Duvall are good enough actors to make them watchable, but director David Dobkin (The Change-up) hammers every sentimental scene home with far too much force. And the script is so simplistic that it chickens out before anything interesting happens. Even the court case lacks something compelling to draw the audience in. It certainly doesn't help that the characters are all deeply contrived. Just one example: there's a disability for each of the three brothers: physical, emotional and mental.

The Jury Is Left Divided After Robert Downey Jr’s ‘The Judge’ Shows At TIFF

Robert Downey Jr Robert Duvall

Starring Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall as a dysfunctional father son duo, The Judge had its premiere at the Toronto Film festival on Friday (September 5th). While the film’s impressive leads might have been enough for some to generate ‘Oscar buzz’, the critics have been left a little underwhelmed by Downey’s latest offering. Could it be that Robert Downey Jr just packs too much punch for a small town family drama?

Since becoming Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr has reinvented himself as the quintessential action hero. We’re now so used to seeing him surrounded by special effects in the sleek environment of Stark Industries, that it’s hard to imagine him in any other setting. But in The Judge Downey is transported to small town Indiana as a big city lawyer who’s forced to return home after the death of his mother. Along with his mother’s passing, Downey’s Hank must also detail with his judge father and their complicated relationship which becomes more strained after his dad is accused of a hit and run.

How Sandra Bullock Became The Highest Paid Actress In Hollywood

Sandra Bullock Alfonso Cuaron George Clooney Melissa McCarthy Robert Downey Jr

The results of Forbes annual celebrity rich list are in and it is with a certain amount of surprise thatSandra Bullockwas the highest paid film star of the past year. Bullock raked in over $51 million (that just over £30 million) and it seems that the 50 year-old has made some very shrewd decisions over the past years over which films she attached her name to, and not all of them looked like sure-fire box-office smashes, on paper at least.

Sandra Bullock At The DGA Awards
Sandra's box-office success has exerted a gravitational pull on all cash in her vicinity.

Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuaron and also starring George Clooney, cost a whopping $100 million to produce thanks to its almost exclusive reliance on extensive special effects. Yet the film excelled with audiences and critics alike, scooping seven Oscars as well as a host of BAFTA’s. Bullock also duly received an Oscar nomination for her role as the astronaut caught in a potentially catastrophic disaster in Earth’s orbit. Gravity drew $716 million in global box-office takings, awarding Bullock and co-star Clooney a tidy sum for their efforts which included a gruelling shooting experience whereupon the leading duo were suspended from wires and trapped in claustrophobic space suits.

Lead Film Roles That Could Have Looked Very Different

Robert Downey Jr Tom Cruise Halle Berry Vanessa Williams Daniel Day Lewis Liam Neeson Christian Bale Henry Cavill

With Robert Downey Jr fitting so perfectly as likeable irritant Tony Stark, Christian Bale slipping so easily into the tortured billionaire psyche of Bruce Wayne and Daniel Day-Lewis transforming himself into the epitome of Abraham Lincoln, it's hard to believe that for all of the above roles, there were some serious previous contenders. But contenders there were and some of the not entirely savoury.

Tom Cruise as Iron Man

The pint-sized action hero made it his mission impossible to kick ass as IMF agent, Ethan Hunt, but could he have romanced Pepper Potts in quite the same way as Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man? It seems like we very nearly found out with Cruise at one point in serious contention to play the arrogant but entertaining genius.

No one is surprised that Marvel had big things prepared for their Comic-Con panel, after all it’s the biggest industry event of the year. Those, who missed out on a seat in Hall H, however, won’t have to wait long for the recaps and news leaks to start pouring in, not including (unfortunately) the long awaited announcement of the actor cast to play Dr. Strange in the upcoming film, HitFix reports.

Robert Downey Jr.
RDJ won't be the (only) star of the show this time.

The panel, which featured the longest superhero lineup of any event ever (we’re guessing here) included Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), James Spader, who will be introduced as Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Josh Brolin, who was announced as the voice of Thanos. This Is Why Robert Downey Jr Is So Rich

Robert Downey Jr

We've been reporting on the chances of Robert Downey Jr returning for Iron Man 4 all week, and, despite some speculation that Colin Farrell is waiting in the wings to take up the role of Tony Stark, it seems Downey Jr is going nowhere - providing Marvel has (a) a decent script and (b) a fat wallet. Chef Review

Very Good

Like comfort food, this movie has very little nutritional value, but it sure goes down smoothly. This is one of those shamelessly delicious-looking films that makes our mouths water at the tasty dishes that are lovingly created on-camera. And it also has an array of deeply likeable characters, witty cameos and sparkling dialogue to keep us smiling. So who cares that nothing unexpected happens from start to finish? This is a movie we sit back and enjoy without worrying about the appearance of a plot twist.

The title character is Carl (played by writer-director Jon Favreau), the chef at a top Los Angeles restaurant that is stuck in a rut because the owner (Dustin Hoffman) refuses to change anything on the menu. When a snooty food critic (Oliver Platt) criticises Carl for his tired and predictable cuisine, Carl's reaction sparks an angry Twitter war. In a fit of anger, Carl quits his job then hatches a plan to get back to his roots while bonding with Percy (Emjay Anthony), his pre-teen son with spicy ex-wife Inez (Sofia Vergara). So Carl and his sidekick Martin (John Leguizamo) take Percy to Miami to refurbish food truck and drive back to California, along the way building a reputation and perfecting their Latin-infused menu.

Since a complex plot would just be distracting, this film coasts on the charisma of its likeable cast, throwing in lively side roles for the likes of Scarlett Johansson as a restaurant colleague, Bobby Cannavale as a fellow chef and most memorably Robert Downey Jr. as Inez's hilariously nutty ex. Everyone is relaxed and effortlessly funny, which makes the interaction feel amusing and never remotely forced. While this is easily Favreau's most assured work as a director (that's including the first two Iron Man movies), this is also his most generous performance too. He infuses the whole film with easy-going charm.

'The Judge': Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall Have Big Problems In Powerful New Drama

Robert Downey Jr Robert Duvall

Warner Bros. have released the first trailer for The Judge, an emotionally-charged family drama and thriller that sees Robert Downey Jr. starring alongside Robert Duvall as father and son. David Dobkin ('Wedding Crashers') directs this tense and surprising tale of family loyalties and moral challenges.

Though Robert Downey Jr. imparts some of his trademark charm and arrogance to the role to humorous effect for the opening scenes of the movie, Wedding Crashers The Judge is not, with serious and thought-provoking undertones.

Downey Jr. is Hank Palmer, a ruthless but brilliant lawyer who has no qualms about defending people he knows to be blatantly guilty, leading to tension in the courtroom. His high-flying city lifestyle hits the ground with a bump when he learns that his mother has died.

Hank Palmer is a ruthless but excellent lawyer, despised by many of his peers for his habit of representing often blatantly guilty criminals. One day mid-trial however, he receives a call from home informing him of his mother's recent death. Reluctantly, he ventures back to the town of Carlinville, Indiana where he grew up to convene with his family ahead of the funeral. As he expected, the greeting between himself and his father - the local Judge Joseph Palmer - is particularly frosty. As a young college graduate, Hank was desperate to leave the harsh and unfriendly grasp of his father but when the town's sheriff tells him that Joseph is now a murder suspect, he begins to feel a grudging obligation to cast their differences aside and help him protest his innocence.

The 5 Marvel Superheroes We'd Like To See In 'The Lego Movie 2'

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the writer/director dream team behind the hugely successful The Lego Movie have said that they would love to feature Marvel heroes in The Lego Movie 2. The sequel, which is provisionally set to come out in May 2017, will be directed by Chris McKay, rather than Miller and Lord.

The Lego Movie 2 Marvel Superheroes The Lego Movie won over even the harshest critics to become one of the biggest films of 2013

Both have admitted it would be difficult to make it work with Marvel in The Lego Movie 2 because of legal issues. The Lego Movie was made by Warner Bros, so they were able to use all of the DC superheroes, as they are owned by Warner. Superman, the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash all featured in the first Lego Movie, but would Marvel allow Warner to use their characters?

Chef Trailer

Carl Casper is a chef working at one of the top restaurants of Miami. Food is his ultimate passion in life and so he is utterly heartbroken when his boss forces him to cook a 'safer' menu, bypassing his usually ambitious creations. The change came about when it was found that a formidable food critic would be visiting the establishment, but, as it turns out, the menu switch was a bad idea and Carl doesn't take his subsequent criticism very well at all. After reading his bad review and going viral, he sends out a badly judged post over Twitter and is thus forced to leave his post at the eatery. Instead, he sets up his own food truck, delivering his food on wheels to anyone willing to try a new culinary experience, and along the way uses it to reconnect with his young son and ex-wife.

'Chef' is brilliant comedy about self-discovery, passion and drive. The movie's main star, Primetime Emmy nominated Jon Favreau ('Cowboys & Aliens', 'Iron Man', 'Elf', 'Zathura: A Space Adventure'), was also responsible for the direction, production and screenplay and it made its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March. It is due for UK release on June 18th 2014.

'Ant-Man' Will Star Paul Rudd In 2015. Should We Be Excited?

Paul Rudd Joseph Gordon-Levitt Robert Downey Jr

Marvel is steadily gearing up for its highly anticipated “phase 3” and it looks like the studio may cast Paul Rudd as Ant Man, a lesser known superhero soon to be brought to the Marvel film universe. Ant-Man is definitely one of the less coveted roles within the Marvel-verse and the decision to bring the character into the films was originally questioned by fans, because of Ant-Man’s mostly comedic role in the comics. Rudd himself is currently promoting his most recent movie, Anchorman 2, where he stars opposite Will Ferrell, Steve Carell and Christina Applegate.

Rudd's casting is yet to be confirmed by Marvel officials.

Then again, there were similar concerns before the introduction of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Originally, the actor was selected for his similar personality to the character of Tony Stark and with Paul Rudd being known mostly for his comedic work, it seems the studio might be using the same casting method.

Plot Twist: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Tops Forbes Highest Grossing Actors List

Dwayne Johnson Robert Downey Jr Steve Carell Sandra Bullock Jennifer Lawrence

Let’s talk about how Dwayne Johnson was named the highest grossing actor of 2013. No seriously, you did not misread that. Thanks to profits from the incredibly successful Fast & Furious 6, The Rock has topped Forbes’ list of biggest earners for this year with his films making $1.3 bn this year. That’s cool, since Johnson seems like a pretty chilled and hardworking guy, etc.

Dwayne Johnson, Superstars for Sandy
That is what you would call a $1.3 billion smile.

But what about Robert Downey Jr. or F&F co-stars like Vin Diesel? Surely the man who starred in the highest grossing film of 2013 (Iron Man 3, in case you’ve spent most of this year in a cave with no wi-fi) must be somewhere around the top? That he is, in fact Downey took second place. This maybe because, while Iron Man 3 was a huge success at the box office, it was the actor’s only film this year, while Johnson starred in four, including blockbuster G.I. Joe: Retaliation and of course Fast & Furious 6.

Whedon, speaking to the entertainment website, said "I knew right away what I wanted to do with him, he's always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he's got a bee in his bonnet. He's not a happy guy, which means he's an interesting guy. He's got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we'll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [Scarlet Witch, a new character] who's a witch."

Actor Dustin Hoffman can now breathe a sigh of relief after the surgery he underwent to treat his cancer was a success. With little confirmed information regarding the nature or type of cancer, Hoffman's fans should simply be relieved that the twice Oscar-winning actor is still alive and well.
