That's when he meets Iron Man, who intructs him to use his powers to rid the streets of petty criminals with the strict caveat that he must leave any supervillain problems to the Avengers. He suddenly finds himself equipped with the ability to climb buildings and spin webs - powers that he knows he wants to use for good but of which he really doesn't know where to start. He's being mentored by Tony Stark, who suggests he keep to small-time crime rather than taking on the city's supervillains, but he's ready to take on the big guys and he's certainly tired of being patronised by Iron Man who doesn't think he's ready to become an Avenger especially when he's still got high school to complete. When a new menace in the shape of the Vulture makes himself known in New York, the newly dubbed Spider-Man wants to help take him down, but how can he do that with the Avengers trying to keep him out of the loop?

'Iron Man 3' Director Says Film's Villain Was Changed From Female To Male Because Of Toy Sales

Shane Black Guy Pearce Rebecca Hall Kevin Feige Robert Downey Jr

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black has shed new light on the sexism in the movie industry, by describing how the villain in the 2013 Marvel film had to be changed from female to male, to help toy sales. Speaking to Uproxx, Black said that after the draft of the film’s script was finished, he received a memo saying the villain’s gender had to be changed to male, because a female toy wouldn't sell as well.

Shane BlackShane Black has revealed how Iron Man 3’s villain was changed from male to female.

“All I’ll say is this, on the record: There was an early draft of Iron Man 3 where we had an inkling of a problem,” Black began. “Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the draft.” The character is thought to be Rebecca Hall’s Maya Hansen, who ended up having a much smaller part.

Captain America: Civil War Review

Excellent

After the formulaic thrills of The Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron, Marvel's Avengers were in danger of getting stuck in a rut, but a smart script for this surprisingly focussed thriller kicks everything into a new direction. What's surprising is that the screenwriters have managed to incorporate a wide range of characters without the film ever feeling overcrowded. Each person has a journey to travel, so the actors get a chance to invest plenty of personality into the action.

After the events of Ultron, there's a political debate about the need to oversee the Avengers' missions. Iron Man Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) thinks a special UN council is a good idea, but Captain America Steve (Chris Evans) thinks that will limit the team's ability to help people. Then Steve's best pal Bucky (Sebastian Stan) is framed for a bombing, and Black Panther T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is drawn into the fray. The Avengers are forced to take sides, with those supporting Bucky becoming outlaws. Tony recruits Spider-Man Peter (Tom Holland) to his team, while Steve drafts in Ant-Man Scott (Paul Rudd). And as they all face off against each other, none of them realise that this entire situation is being manipulated by a vengeful man named Zemo (Daniel Bruhl).

Watching this film requires the audience to suspend disbelief that these super-powered friends could be pushed to try to kill each other. That never quite makes sense, and indeed the script acknowledges this fact when one person goes down and everyone reacts emotionally. But the high-powered cast is so good at creating these intensely driven superheroes that it's not difficult to go with it.

Captain America: Civil War Trailer

The Avengers are suffering from an image crisis. As much good that they do and as many lives that they save, the superheroes also cause unlimited amounts of damage to cities and civilisation. The government wish to find an answer to this problem and they decide that all superheroes should be registered and held accountable for their actions.

Tony Stark is brought in to begin talks on behalf of The Avengers, knowing how much damage he's personally done under his superhero disguise, Stark see the government's point and decides that a register wouldn't be entirely unwelcome. Captain America on the other hand has no such wishes; The Cap sees any government intervention as something beyond reasonable requirement. In the middle of all this is Cap's old friend Bucky who could be prosecuted under the new laws. As The Avengers are forced to split into two halves, it looks like there's going to be no way for the old team to form any kind of agreement.

As their opinions deepen and rivalries are deepens, certain members of Hydra begin to tighten their control and their plans for future domination of the world are getting stronger. The Avengers must find a way to put their differences aside in order to beat the real enemy.

'Captain America: Civil War': The Best Marvel Movie Ever? Reviews Are In...

Chris Evans Robert Downey Jr

Early reviews for 'Captain America: Civil War' have been more than positive, but there are still doubts as to whether or not it beats the epicness of 2014's 'The Winter Soldier'. Whatever the verdict, it seems it still cements itself as the comic book movie to beat this year.

Chris Evans in Captain America Civil WarChris Evans plays a troubled Captain America

In the wake of 'Batman V Superman', there wasn't much going on in the way of praise for that DC venture. But now it's been proven that it's not exactly the premise that's put people off. Indeed, in Marvel's 'Captain America: Civil War', a similar idea of two protagonists fighting against each is used; neither have evil intentions, just very different ideas on how to protect mankind; and critics are LOVING it.

People are excited about 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'. That's an understatement; the world couldn't be much more excited about the conclusion to the second phase of Marvel's Cinematic Universe. So much so, that within hours of announcing that Marvel would release the first trailer as part of their 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.', the trailer was leaked. Marvel responded by just uploading the trailer early and blaming the leak on S.H.I.E.L.D. enemy, Hydra. Then, in order to fulfil the promise they made, a second trailer was created for 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

Robert Downey Jr Robert Duvall

Clearly determined to be a contender, this film is carefully designed to showcase the work of stars Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. Of course, Downey has been Oscar nominated before, for Chaplin (1992) and Tropic Thunder (2008). Duvall won Best Actor for Tender Mercies (1983) and has been nominated five other times.

Yet while both of them give it their all in The Judge, the film perhaps isn't a strong enough film to gain much traction among those who are predicting this year's race. The current leaders in the Best Actor race are considered to be Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Michael Keaton (Birdman), Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Steve Carell (Foxcatcher). Duvall has a slightly better chance to get a nod for Supporting Actor, although the favourites are J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Edward Norton (Birdman), Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher) and Ethan Hawke (Boyhood).

TV and film superstars often don’t seem like real people. They live on a screen in our front room, or occasionally on a bigger screen in a bigger room if it’s a special occasion. They perform something funny, moving, sad or uplifting and then we, as the viewing public, go back to our daily lives and they continue to be these things that we can’t really associate with. Do they eat, drink, fight, burp, play and laugh like everyone else? Who can tell when the only time we see them is pouting on a red carpet in beautiful designer clothes that make them look unrealistically sensational?

Hollywood stars like Leonardo Dicaprio have to apply for their job just like all of his fans

While the everyday lifestyle of the average acting superstar may be but mere guesswork for us mortals, what we can conclude is that they have to interview for jobs just as much as the next person - and they have to do it on camera.

The Less Than Marvel-ous Movies Robert Downey Jr Would Rather We Forgot

Robert Downey Jr

Ever since he became the cinematic embodiment of Iron Man, life has been pretty good to Robert Downey Jr. Now, for the second year running, the actor's been named Forbes’s highest Hollywood earner after raking in $75 million this year. Of course things weren't always so great for the future Tony Stark. Just over 10 years ago Robert was well on his way to becoming a Hollywood tragedy, thanks to his drug addiction and numerous arrests, before he finally managed to turn his life around. But even during his darker period we always knew Robert was special, even if he has fallen victim to a few big screen duds in his career. Need some reminding? Here’s our list of some of the movies we think Robert would rather forget about (interestingly, he has admitted he can't remember some of them.)

Plot Twist: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Tops Forbes Highest Grossing Actors List

Dwayne Johnson Robert Downey Jr Steve Carell Sandra Bullock Jennifer Lawrence

Let’s talk about how Dwayne Johnson was named the highest grossing actor of 2013. No seriously, you did not misread that. Thanks to profits from the incredibly successful Fast & Furious 6, The Rock has topped Forbes’ list of biggest earners for this year with his films making $1.3 bn this year. That’s cool, since Johnson seems like a pretty chilled and hardworking guy, etc.

Dwayne Johnson, Superstars for Sandy
That is what you would call a $1.3 billion smile.

But what about Robert Downey Jr. or F&F co-stars like Vin Diesel? Surely the man who starred in the highest grossing film of 2013 (Iron Man 3, in case you’ve spent most of this year in a cave with no wi-fi) must be somewhere around the top? That he is, in fact Downey took second place. This maybe because, while Iron Man 3 was a huge success at the box office, it was the actor’s only film this year, while Johnson starred in four, including blockbuster G.I. Joe: Retaliation and of course Fast & Furious 6.

"I can't honestly say I make that, but I do make some Rice Krispies treats and hot chocolate. My best hostess tip is to have good food and really good music! We usually put on the Charlie Brown Christmas album. That's my favorite. And then we'll go to Bing Crosby and stuff like that."

In Marvel lore, according to Entertainment Weekly, Ultron is a robot intent on acquiring power. His qualities include super-strength, mind control, genius intellect and a coma ray. Considering he has these qualities and happens to be a robot may make this a difficult role to play for Spader. It has not been announced if Spader will be providing the voice or playing the role with the help of motion capture.

Whedon, speaking to the entertainment website, said "I knew right away what I wanted to do with him, he's always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he's got a bee in his bonnet. He's not a happy guy, which means he's an interesting guy. He's got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we'll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [Scarlet Witch, a new character] who's a witch."

Dustin Hoffman Gives Cancer The Slip After Being "Surgically Cured"

Dustin Hoffman Scarlett Johansson Robert Downey Jr Sofia Vergara

Actor Dustin Hoffman can now breathe a sigh of relief after the surgery he underwent to treat his cancer was a success. With little confirmed information regarding the nature or type of cancer, Hoffman's fans should simply be relieved that the twice Oscar-winning actor is still alive and well.

Dustin & Lisa Hoffman
Dustin's Wife Lisa Has Supported The Actor Through Cancer.

In a statement reported by People magazine, Hoffman's publicist Jodi Gottlieb confirmed that the 75 year-old is doing well: "It was detected early and he has been surgically cured," she said, "Dustin is feeling great and is in good health." Apparently the actor and director will undergo doctor-recommended preventative treatments to minimise any chance of a recurrence of what was allegedly throat cancer in the future.

Is Comic-Con Still Just For Geeks?

Bryan Cranston Christian Bale Robert Downey Jr Chris Evans

Comic Con has always been the Mecca of the geek. Whether it’s showcasing the latest superhero movie, a Q&A session with a prominent comic book writer or a season reveal of the latest sci-fi franchise; it’s always been for geeks, by geeks. But what about this year?

Iron Man 3Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man

The last decade has seen a rise in popularity of geek culture, culminating in the ever-popular U.S sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, featuring four lovable geeks and their supposedly ‘normal’ neighbor Penny. Sheldon, Leonard, Howard and Raj all eulogize Comic-Con in the show, and like many of so-called geeks who identify these characters, they collect innumerable fantasy and sci-fi object D’art.

Robert Downey has obliterated the field in Forbes' annual list of the highest paid actors in the world, earning $75 million in just 12 months thanks to super-hits The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

Downey Jr didn't even feature in last year's list, though beat second place Channing Tatum by over $30 million in earnings for 2013. He also left the likes of Leonardo Dicaprio, Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington in his dust, begging the question: is a man once considered box-office poison by studios really worth the cash?

George Clooney's 'Odd Film' 'Gravity' To Open Venice Film Festival

George Clooney Sandra Bullock Robert Downey Jr Blake Lively Scarlett Johansson Natalie Portman

George Clooney's new movie Gravity, about two astronauts stranded in space, will open the 70th edition of the Venice Film Festival on August 28, 2013. The 3D movie by acclaimed director Alfonso Cuaron, will hit theaters in the U.S. on October 4, 2013 and is already drumming up anticipation thanks largely to an intriguing teaser trailer.

"It is a very odd film, really," Clooney told USA Today in 2011, the year before Gravity was originally set to be released. "Two people in space. No monsters. It's more like 2001 (A Space Odyssey) than an action film." It's been a long road to get the movie to screen, with Robert Downey Jr originally pencilled in for the male lead before dropping out of the project and opening the door for Clooney.

Producers originally settled on Sandra Bullock for the female lead after reportedly testing French actress Marion Cotillard and mulling over the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively. Natalie Portman was apparently offered the role without a screen test following her Oscar winning performance in Black Swan, though passed on the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man Will Return With Two More 'Avengers' Movies

Robert Downey Jr Gwyneth Paltrow

After rumours had circulated that Robert Downey Jr. wouldn't be involved in any more Avengers films due to contract issues, an announcement was made on Marvel's website this week that put our collective minds at ease. It read: "Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of the 'billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.'"

The 48 year-old actor has signed a two-picture deal that will see him don the red and gold suit as least two more times in the Avengers films. Downey's co-star in the films, Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays love interest Pepper Potts explained how it just wouldn't be right for anyone else to take over from Downey Jr. in the franchise: "Personally, I think it would be very hard for someone to step into Iron Man, because it is so Robert."

The success of the first film could have been a deciding factor for the Manhattan-born actor after reportedly earning $50 million (£33m) from the first Avengers film alone. According to Marvel, the first of the Avengers films - 2012's Avengers Assemble - and this year's Iron Man 3 are ranked currently in the top five highest grossing films to date, with collective worldwide earnings of over $2.7 billion (£1.7bn).

Joss Whedon Won't Make 'Avengers 2' Without Downey Jr. And That's A Fact.

Joss Whedon Robert Downey Jr Avengers

Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr is yet to sign on to appear in Avengers 2, it has emerged. Contractual negotiations between Marvel and the actor have been complicated by the fact that the third movie in the Iron Man franchise became the fifth highest grossing movie in history, just $100 million short of The Avengers.

Pretty much everyone - including Marvel - assumed Downey would be turning in for work on Avengers 2 given the huge success of the first film, though nothing has been signed. In conversation with the Daily Beast, director Joss Whedon made it clear he would not begin production on the sequel without his leading man, saying, "He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him, nor do I think I'll be called upon to do that," he said, unequivocally adding, "I don't think it's in my interest, Marvel's interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine. But I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things. You have to be ready for the unexpected. But I loved working with Robert, and everybody knows he embodied that role in a way no one else can."

Of course both Whedon and Downey Jr would make an ABSOLUTE FORTUNE from Avengers 2, though the actor's standing as (probably) the most bankable star in the world right now is muddying a deal. Nevertheless, Whedon remained upbeat, saying, "I think everything will be fine."

Forget 'The Hangover', Zach Galifianakis Top 5 (Other) Roles

Zach Galifianakis Tim Heidecker Eric Wareheim Ted Danson Steve Carell Paul Rudd Robert Downey Jr Will Ferrell

Zach Galifianakis may well be back for another stab at The Hangover franchise, with the rest of the goofy gang who constantly managed to find ways to get more boozed up than anyone thought possibly imaginable, but he's got plenty more to his canon than that too, you know? The actor has been in the game since the 90's, and already had ammassed a large selection credits before the first Hangover film came about in 2009. 'Sure, anyone can tot up how many small speaking roles he's had listed on IMDB' I hear you cry; well, let us show you that there is a little more to Zach Galifianakis than roles where he simply has to drink hard and be a little bit weird.

Lindsay Lohan 'Determined' To Leave The Betty Ford Center

Lindsay Lohan Robert Downey Jr Johnny Cash

Lindsay Lohan is apparently "determined" to leave The Betty Ford Center though prosecutors are having absolutely none of it. According to TMZ.com, doctors at the famous rehabilitation center have cut Lindsay off her precious Adderall, which she always considered a deal breaker.

Sources connected to the situation say Lindsay is going "crazy" and is desperate to move to another facility that will cater for her needs. The Hollywood star has taken matters into her own hands and have researched other facilities, finding one on the west coast which she believes is the perfect venue to spend her 90 days. It is believed that Lohan believes the Betty Ford Center - home to previous patients including Robert Downey Jr and Johnny Cash - is "old school" and not sensitive to the contemporary problems of young people.

Law enforcement sources say prosecutors are "unbending" and will not approve any move. One source said, "She had 45 days to find a suitable place.  She didn't listen to her people and just did what she wanted so it's her problem now. Not gonna happen."

Iron Man 3 Review

Excellent

Changing the writer and director for this third Iron Man movie turns out to be the best thing that could have happened, because Shane Black is a much more focussed filmmaker, and he gives this franchise a badly needed kick. We know that he and Downey work well together (see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), but we could never have anticipated how Black would bring clarity to Downey's comical riffs. He also makes the action scenes much more human, and therefore a lot more thrilling.

The story takes place in the overall Marvel chronology. Wealthy arms manufacturer Tony Stark (Downey) is feeling badly shaken by his experience working with the Avengers to fight off an alien invasion. So he dives into his work and neglects his relationship with Pepper (Paltrow), who also runs his company. Then two faces from the past reappear: bio-scientist Maya (Hall) is an old colleague of Tony's, while technical genius Aldrich (Pearce) has a past with Pepper. And both seem somehow connected to a wave of nasty bombings that is terrorising America, masterminded by a menacing man who calls himself the Mandarin (Kingsley). And the Mandarin's next target is Tony.

Intriguingly, the script keeps Tony out of the Iron Man suit for much of the film's running time, which makes his character feel much more grounded than ever before. It also makes the action set pieces even more spectacular, since they're not mere robot-vs-robot animated battles. So even if the dialog is peppered with technical gibberish, at least it has a personal dimension. Which not only deepens Tony and Pepper as characters, but makes the surrounding people more interesting. These include Tony's old pal (Cheadle), two self-healing goons (Dale and Szostak) and a pre-teen (Simpkins) who helps Tony. And with his constantly surprising character, Kingsley very nearly steals the show.

Iron Man 3 Trailer: "I Build Neat Stuff, I've Got A Great Girl, I Save The World" (Video)

Robert Downey Jr

"I build neat stuff, I've got a great girl, and occasionally save the world. So why can't I sleep?" asks Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark in the opening sequence of the new Iron Man 3 trailer. The businessman and superhero promises "good, old-fashioned revenge," in the third movie in the franchise, which sees Stark do battle with Ben Kingsley's evil Mandarin. At one point in the new promo, the villain forebodingly asks Iron Man "Do you want an empty life, or a meaningful death?"

We also get our first real look at Stark's girlfriend Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, who appears to be in danger. We wonder who'll come to her rescue? It's been long assumed that the third instalment of the Marvel franchise will be the darkest yet, and the latest trailer appears to confirm that. The official synopsis reads, "Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds..When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle."

For the first time, Stark is feeling very vulnerable as he struggles to come to terms with himself as just Tony Stark rather than the supposedly indestructible Iron Man.

As 'Iron Man 3' Trailer Hits, Terrence Howard Blames Franchise For 'Killing His Career'

Terrence Howard Robert Downey Jr

With the third instalment of the Iron Man franchise fast approaching you could be forgiven for forgetting that Oscar nominee Terrence Howard was actually one of the stars of the first instalment of the comic adaption. One person who hasn't forgotten about his involvement though is Howard himself and the reason why is not nostalgia or because he holds particularly fond memories of his time portraying James Rhodes/WarMachine, the reason he recalls his only liaison with Marvel is because he blames the Disney-owned studio for ruining his career.

Black Mirror: How Britain (And Hollywood) Fell In Love With Charlie Brooker

Charlie Brooker Robert Downey Jr Hayley Atwell

Charlie Brooker's Channel 4 anthology series Black Mirror returned this week, with an altogether more dramatic and engaging season opener. Though praised for its uniqueness, the first installment of the show was dubbed unwatchable by some TV critics, with plot lines exploring the Prime Minister being forced into sexual intercourse with a pig and a talent show descending into pornography. Brooker's show was certainly hard hitting, though he seems to have toned things down for season two, sacrificing some of the surrealism for a more narrative driven approach.

Last night's episode - Be Right Back - was set in a distorted reality future, following young couple Ash (Domhall Gleeson) and Martha (Hayley Atwell). When Ash is killed in a road accident, his girlfriend signs up for a computer program that trawls the internet for Ash's public information and creates a profile representing him, which replies realistically to her messages. The Guardian gave the show a positive review, "This Black Mirror feels less like the usual Brookerian nightmarish video game dystopia, and more like 2019. It's also less satirical and acerbic than some of his previous television; not just a technology-obsessed sarcastic underwhelmist's bleak view of the future," wrote critic Sam Wollaston. The Independent's Neela Debnath picked up on Brooker's ability to intrigue the Twitter generation, "Be Right Back works so well because it has captured the social media zeitgeist. It was a lovely and touching story."

Brooker - a former PC Zone writer - has become a familiar figure on British television in recent years. He won early acclaim for his Screenwipe series, a comedic yet intelligent look at current shows and how television is produced. He went on to create the Newswipe spin-off series as well as hosting 10 O'Clock Live and writing for The Guardian. His five-part horror drama Dead Set was nominated for the 2009 Best Drama Serial at the BAFTAs.

Iron Man 3 Trailer

Tony Stark may be Iron Man, but he's feeling less than unbreakable these days. Plagued by nightmares and guilty feelings, he is forced to doubt himself and his ability to protect himself and the ones he loves against a new enemy; the formidably ruthless Mandarin. His doubts are only amplified when his world and his power source are brutally snatched from him and left to burn at the hands of his enemy and he is left with his own internal strengths and resourcefulness alone to find the perpetrator and end his reign of terror. Stark is finally made to confront himself and his superhero identity as Mandarin sets out to prove there are no real heroes in the world.

The third instalment of this Marvel adventure, 'Iron Man 3' is set to be the most hard-hitting of the movies so far with questions being raised less about Iron Man and more about the true Tony Stark and his deeper abilities. It has been directed by Shane Black (the writer of the 'Lethal Weapon' film series) who also co-wrote the comic action flick with Drew Pearce ('Lip Service', 'No Heroics'). It is set for a spectacular release in cinemas on April 26th 2013 in the UK.

Little has caused more contention in the contactmusic office than our recent discussion about the Christmas films list! Obviously, everyone has their own favourite, and to them that will always be the top of the list. One thing that became all too clear to us was that - with the exception of Elf & Bad Santa - there really hasn't been too many full blown Christmas films so we'd like to make a plea to Bill Murray and the other Hollywood greats - PLEASE make a new (top quality) Christmas film to join these festive favourites!

I can't say we particularly advocate parents encouraging their offspring to watch films above their age certificate, but it appears we all grew up in houses that didn't really mind what we watched - and let's face it, some of the best Christmas films might have a few boobs or rowdy drunken behaviour... As children of the 80's and 90's, we're fully aware that there's original to some of these remakes, but as is always the way, these are the films we grew up with and as such, they are our favourites.

Enough explanation, in no particular order here are the films we recommend you watch over the holidays!

The Avengers Review

Excellent
Like four action movies mashed into one, it's often difficult to know where to look while watching this busy blockbuster. It takes a while to get going, but once writer-director Whedon hits his stride, the film rockets through a series of frantically entertaining set pieces.

When mischievous Loki (Hiddleston) steals the tesseract from top-secret agency Shield, director Nick Fury (Jackson) and his sidekicks (Gregg and Smulders) call in their superheroes: Tony (Downey), Steve (Evans), Natasha (Johansson), Bruce (Ruffalo) and Clint (Renner), better known as Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk and Hawkeye. And Loki's brother Thor (Hemsworth) also turns up. But calling them a team is misleading, as they find it tricky to put rivalries and mistrust aside to save the world from Loki's apocalyptic plan.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows Review

Good

Ritchie, Downey and Law are back with another manic romp that feels more like a Victorian James Bond adventure than anything about the famed Conan Doyle characters. While it has the same comical energy, it's not quite as fun as the first go-round.

Brilliant Cambridge professor Moriarty (Harris) is up to no good, taking on Holmes (Downey) by messing with those around him, including his girlfriend-nemesis Irene (McAdams) and his partner Watson (Law), who plans to retire after his upcoming wedding to Mary (Reilly). But nothing goes as planned, and Holmes and Watson are propelled into a vicious game of intrigue that sends them to Paris where they team up with a sexy gypsy (Rapace). They also get help from Holmes' brother Mycroft (Fry) as they head to a climactic showdown in Switzerland.

Who needs logic when the action is this wildly exhilarating? And much of it is drastically slowed-down so Ritchie can show us Holmes' powers of deduction as well as whizzing bullets, explosions and other cool-looking things. The dialog is the same mix of faux intelligent banter and shameless innuendo, which gives the actors something to play with, especially as Downey and Law amusingly move beyond bromance into Brokeback territory.

But we do need some logic. This plot is so messy that it never engages us. And as it builds to a climax in a crazy cliff-perched Alpine castle, we begin to lose interest. Even with the bigger action, zingy dialog and colourful characters, this film barely works up any steam. Whenever Holmes isn't being mischievous, Downey actually looks bored. And Rapace is so sidelined that it's difficult to understand why she's here at all; the filmmakers never give her anything interesting to do.

It's a shame the screenwriters never push the characters further. But at least Ritchie keeps things moving briskly, filling the screen with comical nuttiness and big-gun mayhem. Even if Moriarty makes no sense (would someone this intelligent resort to such a ridiculous plan to make his fortune?), Harris adds heft in the role, including some jagged chemistry with Downey. Let's just hope that the requisite third film lets us in on the joke.

In Dreams Review

Weak
Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) just keeps going down down down. This time, it's a "thriller" about a loony who controls the dreams of Bening, making her loony as well. The loony (I'll kill the "suspense"--it's Downey) also kills her daughter and husband, you know, just for kicks. And there's apples apples apples galore! You know, for symbolism. I think.

Black And White (1999) Review

Good
A very unique and brutal subculture exists in America these days. It's a strange juxtaposition of harsh street life and uber-materialistic greed tempered with a sense of justifiability from a code of unwritten ethics. The world is that of the gangsta rappers, the ghetto boys, and the thug-life advocators that dominate the world of hip-hop and rap music. Black and White, the latest film by James Toback, explores this subculture that grows stronger with every new generation it affects.

The hardest thing about an outsider trying to infiltrate a subculture and explain it to the masses is that the truth is often lost in the translation. Toback throws together a huge canvas of characters and actors in attempt to create a clear picture of why white kids are motivated to impersonate black rappers' lifestyles and why rich whit guys treat black rappers like Arnold and Willis from Diff'rent Strokes.

Restoration Review

Good
Robert Downey's schizophrenic personality has finally found a home in Restoration. This sweeping film, set in 1660 England during the reign of the flamboyant Charles II (Sam Neill), tells the story of Merivel (Downey), who rides a rollercoaster from volunteer surgeon to King's veterinarian, to his fall from grace and his eventual rebirth.

Merivel, the kind of guy who pawns his medical instruments to buy time with prostitutes, starts out as a pretty loathsome chap. However, he's also a pretty talented (and daring) physician, and after healing the King's beloved spaniel, he is brought into the fold of nobility. But the story then takes an inexplicable turn as Merivel is given a knighthood and coerced to marry the King's mistress, Celia (Polly Walker), and then promptly falls in love with her.

Gothika Review

Weak

If only screenwriter Sebastian Gutierrez had put as much effort into story logic and credible characters as director Mathieu Kassovitz puts into generating seat-grabbing goosebumps in "Gothika," the wannabe-cerebral supernatural horror thriller might have had more going for it than just a few good shudders and jumps.

The first above-the-title starring vehicle for 2002 Oscar winner Halle Berry -- playing a criminal psychologist who blacks out after a car accident and wakes up in her own prison asylum, accused of axe-murdering her husband -- the film begins with a strike against it for its laughable attempts at evocative dialogue in the opening-scene rantings of a wild-eyed inmate (Penelope Cruz).

"He opened me like a flower of pain...and it felt goooood," the pretty Spaniard flares, all dowdied-down in Serious Actress Mode. "(Then) I cut his Adam's apple in half like a soft fruit on a summer day."
