This weekend at the box office – things went exactly as predicted, in that Avengers maintained its top spot, making bank with another $77.2 million, making it the film with the second highest sophomore weekend gross of all time. It surpassed the second weekend of Fox’s Avatar ($75.6 million) but fell behind predecessor Marvel’s The Avengers ($103.1 million).

Despite receiving favourable reviews, Hot Pursuit didn't do too well at the box office.

Directed by Joss Whedon, Age of Ultron follows superheroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) as they battle  the new villain of the franchise, technological ultra baddie Ultron (James Spader). Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson also star in the film as twins Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, aka (this isn’t a spoiler, they were in the trailer) Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

Meanwhile, the cop comedy Hot Pursuit, starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara fell behind. A lot. Its debut weekend brought in disappointing earnings, as the MGM, New Line and Warner Bros. co-production checked in at $13,3 million domestic, falling behind early predictions. Tracking initially put it between $15 and $20 million in debut earnings.

The comedy, which cost $35 million to make, follows an uptight cop (Reese Witherspoon) who has to help protect a drug lord's wife (Sofia Vergara).
