In the latest news from what’s been a very bad 2014 for Robin Thicke, it’s been announced that his estranged wife Paula Patton has filed for divorce. The Los Angeles Superior Court confirmed the application to Us Weekly.

Patton and Thicke were married for eight years, having been high school sweethearts. The announcement puts a full stop after what was pretty much a fait accompli. Back in February this year the news broke that the couple had split up, with a source close to Thicke stating that “their marriage was unravelling for a long time.”

According to TMZ, which managed to get a glimpse at the court documents, Patton cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of the split. It may well have something to do with Thicke’s now notorious performance at last year’s VMA Awards and the twerk with Miley Cyrus. He was also rumoured to have cheated on Patton after photographs surfaced of him grabbing a woman’s rear while posing for a photo.

All other aspects of the proceedings appear to be harmonious. Patton has applied for joint custody of their 4 year old son Julian, and the couple put their Los Angeles house up for sale earlier in the summer.

Following the controversy of 2013’s planet-straddling hit ‘Blurred Lines’, which was the biggest selling single of the year, feminists may regard Thicke’s fall from grace to be the result of cosmic karma.

In contrast to that single’s enormous success and its accompanying album, he released a follow-up record called Paula in June, plainly dedicated to his wife and a lovesick attempt to win her back. It flopped disastrously outside of the States, selling just 530 copies in Britain. Even its showing at number 9 in the Billboard charts was a considerable failure by comparison to its predecessor.

He even wept onstage at the BET Awards in the same month, announcing to the crowd "good evening, my name is Robin Thicke, I'd like to dedicate this song to my wife" and "I miss you, and I'm sorry.'"
