Blurred Lines? Turns Out Robin Thicke's Album Is Pretty Good, Too

The sixth album from R&B singer Robin Thicke hits shelves today, though...it's kind of irrelevant, given all anyone cares about is the single, Blurred Lines, and its unrated video.

Could it possibly provide fans with anything more than the pop-tastic Billboard No.1 hit that will comfortably become the biggest selling single of the year?

Well, it turns out the album is pretty good, too.

"The same qualities that made Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines the single the sexy hit of summer - retro-soul grooves and a playful sleaziness - are in full display on Blurred Lines the album," said critic Brian Mansfield of USA Today, "From electro-thumper Give It 2 U to falsetto ballad 4 the Rest of My Life, Thicke exudes the kind of plain-spoken and occasionally creepy sexiness that marked Prince's early records," he added.

Jed Gottlieb of the Boston Herald dubbed Thicke "the new Justin Timberlake," adding, "If "Blurred Lines" generates a few more smashes, and it should, look for Thicke's follow-up to hone his persona: A pop god with a sensitive side will be an unstoppable combo."

The New York Daily News' Jim Faber echoed the comparison, writing, "The whole disc has that campy, carefree vibe of "Blurred Lines." The album brings to a head a recent boon in blue-eyed soul, boosted by equally hot records from Justin Timberlake, Mayer Hawthorne and Fitz and the Tantrums."

Despite the massive single sales, Robin Thicke has suffered a pretty rough summer. After Tricia Romano slammed his Blurred Lines video for the Daily Beast, a furious debate opened up, leaving the Diane Martel clip - featuring naked models parading around - dubbed sexist, and even "rapey," presumably based on the lyric "I know you want it."

Thicke defended the work, while Emily Ratajkowski - one of the world's biggest models who also appears in the video - told Esquire, "I don't. [think it's sexist] I really appreciate the people who watch out for that stuff, and I'm sensitive to those sort of things.

"On the surface level, the naked women dancing, I understand that can be perceived that way. But we're directed to have a sort of confidence, a sarcastic attitude about the whole situation. That eye contact and that attitude really puts us in a power situation," she said.
