The late Robin Williams was well-known for a number of iconic roles and had spread his talent liberally across comedy, thriller, drama and animation. From the fantastically eccentric Mrs Doubtfire, to the troubled and unhappy Sean Maguire from Good Will Hunting and the inescapable comedic brilliance of the Genie in Aladdin, Robin Williams stamped his presence on so many films that audiences will never forget.

But he also featured in a lot of motion pictures that people have forgotten: perhaps there’s only room in the human brain for so many brilliant movies. As a tribute to the actor, who was found dead as a result of suicide on Monday 11 August, we look at some of his lesser known projects.

The Fisher King (1991)

The Fisher King was a critical success, earned a number of awards and gave Williams his third Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

The film is based on Jeff Bridges’ character, Jack Lucas, a cynical and arrogant radio shock jock who becomes depressed and despondent after his on-air antics inadvertently prompt an unstable caller to commit mass murder at a Manhattan bar. Three years after the incident and Jack is down on his luck, drunk and depressed.

One night he stumbles across Parry, played by Williams, a homeless man who has been left in a permanent catatonic state following his wife’s death at the hands of Jack’s psychotic killer. Jack becomes determined to seek redemption and get the old lives back that both he and Parry once had.

Insomnia (2002)

Directed by Christopher Nolan, Insomnia is a competent remake of a 1997 Norwegian psychological thriller of the same name with Williams starring alongside Al Pacino and Hilary Swank.

Sent from the city to investigate the murder of a teenage girl in Alaska, a police detective (Pacino) accidentally shoots his own partner while trying to apprehend the suspect (Williams). Desperate to cover up his mistake, the detective finds himself in the clutches of the suspect who wants absolution in return for his silence.
