Appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court, the 83-year-old answered briefly to personal questions and was referred to Southwark Crown Court. He was granted bail and released with his first court appearance set for 7th October.

Harris was accompanied by his wife Alwen and other relatives. Bodyguards prevented the press and photographers from getting too close to Harris. He did not make any comment outside the court or in; only stating his name and address in response to the judge's questions.

The charges refer to an alleged assault on a girl aged 15-16 between 1980-1981; and three relating to a 14-yearold girl in 1986. The indecent images were allegedly made last year. It seems Harris will choose to plead not guilty, as his lawyer intimated to the BBC.

Amongst those to have been arrested are Gary Glitter, Freddie Star, Dave Lee Travis and Jimmy Tarbuck.

Australian born Harris is best known for his singing career, he created such hits as 'Jake the Peg'; he later became involved in television, presenting a number of shows such as Animal Hospital.
