Unless you’ve been in hibernation for the past few weeks, you may have noticed the internet going crazy for the third season of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and its latest star, Ruby Rose. The 29-year-old Australian actress has caused something of a stir with her good looks and her portrayal of the titillating Stella Carlin on OITNB. In case you’ve missed the buzz surrounding Rose, here’s what you need to know.

She’s Multi-Talented

Rose’s career has included dabbling in acting, modelling, designing, singing and presenting. She first came to prominence in Australia when she featured on Girlfriend magazine’s search for its next top model. During this time she worked for MTV as a VJ and became a well known television personality, appearing as herself in such shows as Australia’s Next Top Model and The 7PM Project. She turned her attention to acting in 2013 when she appeared on two Australian television shows but has gained worldwide attention with her role in Orange Is the New Black

She’s Had Some High Profile Romances

Rose has been romantically involved with a number of high profile women. Rose is currently engaged to Phoebe Dahl, the granddaughter of James and the Giant Peach author Roald Dahl and the cousin of the model turned author Sophie Dahl. The couple have been engaged for over a year. Rose was previously in a relationship with Australian supermodel Catharine McNeal. Rose and McNeal began dating in 2009 and became engaged the following year but announced their separation just months later.

She’s #Twinning With Justin Bieber

One of the jokes on OITNB about Rose’s character is that she bears a striking resemblance to pop sensation Justin Bieber. The two met up at a star studded event in Las Vegas earlier this week and shared a number of pictures from their encounter on Instagram. Rose and Bieber, who have a number of tattoos and a similar haircut, certainly look very similar!

She Identifies As Gender Fluid

Rose identifies as gender fluid, meaning she feels she is a mixture of traditional male and female attributes. Rose explained what it means to be gender fluid during a recent interview with Elle:

"Gender fluidity is not really feeling like you're at one end of the spectrum or the other. For the most part, I definitely don't identify as any gender. I'm not a guy; I don't really feel like a woman, but obviously I was born one. So, I'm somewhere in the middle, which – in my perfect imagination – is like having the best of both sexes."

Rose highlighted her gender fluidity in a short film released last year, ‘Break Free’. Rose transformed herself on camera from being feminine looking, with her tattoos covered and wearing a long haired wig, to appearing masculine. The transformation is incredible and truly does show how each of us can, with relative ease, explore different parts of our gender identity.
