Rupert Grint Fails In Attempt To Win £1 Million In Tax Rebate

Rupert Grint

Rupert Grint, the former Harry Potter actor, has lost in a legal battle with HMRC to win a £1 million tax refund.

The 27 year old actor, who played Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter movies between 2001 and 2011, had appeared personally in court this week in order to attempt to overturn an HM Revenue & Customs block on him being able to change his accounting dates and thus prevent some of his earnings falling within a 50% tax rate imposed in 2010.

Grint’s tax advisers, Clay & Associates, had hoped to successfully argue for a change in accounting dates from July 31st to April 5th in order that 20 months of his income would be taxed in the year 2009-2010, before the Labour-imposed 50p tax rate was introduced.

From Potter To Poet - Daniel Radcliffe Is Officially 'Grown Up'

Daniel Radcliffe Emma Watson Rupert Grint

It’s one of the most widely reported coming of age stories in the media today, Daniel Radcliffe’s. It was almost impossible to see him prevail in high-drama roles when he was prancing around Hogwarts in floods of tears. But now he’s doing scary films, starring on Broadway and breaking boundaries with gay scenes as Allen Ginsberg.

See, if you’d come up to us in a shop five years ago and said: “There will be two beat generation films: one based on the seminal novel by Jack Kerouac, starring Sam Riley and Garret Hedlund, directed by Walter Salles, the man behind City of God and The Motorcycle Diaries, the other: an autobiographical account of Allen Ginsberg’s time at Columbia University from first-time-feature-director John Krokidas,” we would have politely pointed you towards the end of the queue, admitting that the first one sounded better.

Gravity premiere in Venice

George Clooney and Sandra Bullock brought their star power to opening night at the 70th Venice Film Festival on Wednesday. The event launched with the world premiere of Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, and the critical buzz has been big for the thriller about two astronauts stranded in space when their shuttle mission is hit by debris. Take a look at photos of Clooney and Bullock attending The 70th Venice Film Festival here.

The big movie in cinemas around the world this week is the documentary One Direction: This Is Us, which has taken a hammering from critics for being far too on-message. But it's likely to keep fans very happy, especially since it reveals things like the fact that Niall Horan strips down to his underpants when he records in the studio. A scene in the film shows him recording this summer's big hit Best Song Ever in his boxers. Find out why Niall says "I sing better naked" here.

WHO Will Be Next Doctor Who? Place Your Bets Now!

Matt Smith Rupert Grint Ben Whishaw Andrew Scott Billie Piper Steven Moffat David Beckham Jason Statham Simon Cowell

Matt Smith hasn't even given up his role as the Doctor in the BBC's Doctor Who yet but speculation is already rife over who will take over command of the TARDIS as the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor is set to step down this Christmas, having debuted in January 2010.

William Hill have drawn up a list of odds; the most favourable, surprisingly, is for the next Doctor to be played by a female actor.

The bookies current favourite, at 10/1, is 31 year-old Russell Tovey, best known for his roles as werewolf, George Sands, in BBC drama Being Human and the character, Rudge, in both the stage and screen adaptations of The History BoysTovey took to Twitter to lament the stepping down of Smith in a statement that has fuelled speculation he might be in talk to be the next Doctor: "Sad to hear of Matt Smith's doctor departure, he truly is a superb actor and made the Doc proper.. Who's next tho eh? Who's next.. Hmmm x" Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise, jointly ranks alongside Tovey with 10/1 odds. William Hill spokesman, Rupert Adams says he thinks Grint, 24, would "be perfect for the role."

It's World War II and the German and British armies are firmly engaged in combat. However, when a group of Germans find themselves and their shot down aircraft stranded in the freezing temperatures of the Norwegian wilderness, they chance upon an unoccupied hunting cabin. They soon find that they are not alone as a group of Britons approach having also been shot down. Whilst the Brits attempt to abandon the rules of war and work together to stay alive and find help, the Germans insist upon treating them as prisoners of war. There is initial animosity amongst the rival soldiers, but the longer they spend together, the harder it becomes to maintain the invisible wall between them and they soon find themselves becoming closer. However, they all understand that once they are rescued, they must go back to fighting one another in spite of their friendship and the rules of war must take effect once more.

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson And Rupert Grint Are Expanding Their Careers Since The End Of Harry Potter Series

Emma Watson Daniel Radcliffe Rupert Grint

Daniel Radcliffe's naturally creepy pallor makes him ideal for horror and thriller movies. Having played the lead in The Woman in Black, he's now set to appear in a new adaptation of the classic 19th century horror story Frankenstein, playing the hunchbacked laboratory assistant who helps Dr Frankenstein bring his monster to life around which the new film will centre. Not quite the dashing hero role that was his in the Harry Potter movies, but a worthy character nonetheless.

In other Potter news, Radcliffe's co-star Emma Watson has been tipped to play Cinderella in the Disney live-action reworking of the beloved fairytale. It will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and is expected to take on the visual decadence of Alice in Wonderland and this year's Oz the Great and Powerful, according to the Guardian. Cate Blanchett will be playing the evil step-mother and although Watson has reportedly been offered the role it's unclear as to whether she has actually taken in. Since the success of Perks of Being a Wallflower last year, she has been inundated with offers and is definitely going to be appearing in big budget, star studded movies such as The Bling Ring, This Is the End and maybe even another Guillermo Del Toro project called Beauty and the Beast.

Despite being one of the better child actors, and capitalising on the success of the Harry Potter franchise earlier on in their tenure, Rupert Grint's calender is looking decidedly more bare than his colleagues. However, a movie of his opposite Shia LaBoeuf and Evan Rachel Wood The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman will be released later this year, as will a less publicised movie, CBGB.

Harry Potter & The Chamber Of Secrets Review

Good

In his second big-screen outing, adolescent wizard Harry Potter is blessed with enough cinematic magic to overcome several of the very same problems that left last year's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" feeling a little protracted and rambling.

Sure "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" spends twice as much screen time on atmosphere and adventure scenes than on plot and character. But this time around every episode seems relevant, which is a vast improvement over last year's film, bloated as it was with Quidditch matches and monster moments that didn't advance the plot one iota.

Returning director Chris Columbus retains the enchanted ambiance as Harry heads to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his second year of instruction in the black arts. But nothing is ever easy for our young hero, as unseen forces seem to be conspiring against him -- not the least of which is some kind of elusive beast that's loose in Hogwarts' halls, turning students to stone.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban Review

Very Good

Harry Potter is growing up, and so is his movie franchise.Under the tutelage of a new director -- Alfonso Cuarón, known for both children's fare (the 1995 remake of "A Little Princess") and an edgy, insightfully soulful, sex-charged teen road-trip flick ("Y Tu Mama, Tambien") -- the boy wizard has graduated from the world of kiddie movie spectacles with tie-in toys.

"Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" is a film in which depth of character, cunning humor and hair-raising chills come shining through the visual blitzkrieg of special effects -- which are also magnificently improved over the series first two installments. Case in point: a half-horse, half-eagle creature called a Hippogriff that gives "Lord of the Rings'" Gollum a run for his money as the most life-like CGI creation in cinema history.

Beyond just its detailed feathers (which fluff when it shakes) or its golden eyes (which bore holes in the screen with obstinate personality), this winged equine's every movement, from its canter to its peck, is a studied yet natural, amazingly fluid amalgam of the two beasts that were combined to create it.

Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone Review

OK

Overly self-indulgent director Chris Columbus could have cut out the entire middle hour of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and if you hadn't read the popular children's book, you'd never know the difference.

A good 70 percent of the picture consists of showy set pieces that don't service the plot (which we'll get to in a minute) so much as obligingly recreate unrelated passages that would be missed by the boy wizard's enthusiastic and possessive fan base had they been omitted.

One 10-minute episode is spent watching a sport called Quidditch, sort of a flying-broom version of field hockey with more than one puck and incredibly intricate rules that go largely unexplained. It's a lot like the pod race scene in "The Phantom Menace" -- irrelevant but spirited -- although with 1/10th the special effects budget. (Oh, that blatant blue-screening!)
