Despite feverish internet rumors that Ryan Gosling will become the next Batman, it looks like it won't happen.
Ever since Zack Snyder announced a Superman/Batman film in the works at last weekend's Comic-Con, the internet has exploded with rumors; few of which have been about the movie and more about who should replace Christian Bale as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel.
Ryan Gosling's was a name that surfaced quickly and it's easy to see why: Gosling has great stage presence and, as we saw in Drive, the ability to flip from calm to guns blazing in mere seconds. What Culture say that the 32 year-old "perfectly fits this more brutal and tortured Batman, not to mention that he possesses the suave playboy looks to serve as the cover story." So it's a shame really that it's not going to be Ryan.
Sorry Gosling Fans, It's Probably Not Going To Be Ryan.
The actor himself has exuded certain apathy when quizzed about his heroic aspirations. In response to the question "When are you going to do a superhero movie?" back in January 2013 with Screen Crave, Gosling's response was "Well, they're all taken."
When the interviewer points out that The Flash and Green Lantern are still up for grabs, Ryan responds "Well Ryan Reynolds is Green Lantern. I can get Flash basically [...] Here's the thing. Drive was my attempt at the superhero movie. I had a costume and everything. The scorpion jacket. It was like my cape. It was like the idea of a guy that had seen too many superhero movies and then decided that he was going to make himself one."
Could Teen Wolf Tyler Hoechlin Be The Face Of The New Batman?
Gosling also informed the Associated Press in March that he was taking a break from acting because "I've been doing it too much. I've lost perspective on what I'm doing. I think it's good for me to take a break and reassess why I'm doing it and how I'm doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that. I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does." It's not a no, but there are now others with better odds at the bookies than the The Notebook actor.
Looks Like It Won't Be Joseph Gordon-Levitt Either?
Tyler Hoechlin has been one of the more recent names to be thrown up by the rumour mill, i.e. the star of Teen Wolf. Yes, the 25 year-old is wolfy in his looks than bat-like but he has that smouldering stage presence that screams "dangerous." Clichéd perhaps but comic books and their movie adaptations rely on their heavily stylised cinematography and Hoechlin, who got his break alongside Tom Hanks in Road to Perdition, could have the magic formula.
Mad Men's Jon Hamm Wouldn't Be A Bad Choice.
Based on the ending of The Dark Knight Rises, it would be natural to assume that Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was set up as the 'Robin' character, would succeed Bale and become Batman. However, screenwriter David S. Goyer has stated that the Superman/Batman face-off will not exist in the Dark Knight universe, so that bet may as well be scuppered.
Could Michael Fassbender Be The Next To Step Inside The Batmobile?
This certainly won't be the end of the rumoured actors (odds reported by The Guardian), with Jon Hamm (18/1), Jake Gyllenhaal (10/1) and Michael Fassbender (25/1) all interesting choices to take over the batmobile. Even at this stage in the game it's pretty safe to say, we won't be seeing Ryan Gosling in the pointed cowl any time soon.
