Blake Lively And Ryan Reynolds Learn To Save Lives With Infant CPR Class

Blake Lively Ryan Reynolds

There are some important skills a parent must learn regardless of whether or not they'll ever need it. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are trying to encourage new parents to take classes in child CPR - just in case they one day have to save their child's life.

Becoming a parent means learning a lot of new skills as you go along. Something that you are not going to want to learn as you go, however, is child first aid - more specifically CPR. Hopefully, neither Blake Lively nor Ryan Reynolds will ever be forced to perform this life-saving procedure on either of their daughters; Ines and James; but that doesn't mean they don't need to be prepared.

Life Review

Very Good

Like a mash-up of Alien and Gravity, this ripping sci-fi horror movie is very effective at generating tension and terror. And it helps that an adept cast is on board to give some weight to characters who are rather thinly written. The script, by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, keeps everything lean and mean, concentrating on the scary stuff while ignoring any thematic depth or topicality. But director Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) keeps it moving briskly.

It's set on board the International Space Station, where a specialised six-person crew is examining new soil samples from Mars. Science officer Hugh (Ariyon Bakare) finds alien life in the dirt, and watches in amazement as the cells grow and cooperate to create an interactive jellyfish-like creature, which schoolchildren on Earth name Calvin. Infectious disease doctors David and Miranda (Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson) are concerned that this life-form remains contained in the lab. So Captain Kat (Olga Dihovichnaya) and technicians Roy and Sho (Ryan Reynolds and Hiroyuki Sanada) set out to lock things down. But of course, this proves trickier than they thought it would be.

What follows is, unsurprisingly, a stalker slasher movie in which the crew members go down one by one. Calvin is a quick learner, and grows into a seriously menacing creature, complete with the silly addition of a kind of evil digital face. It also gets a few corny point of view camera angles. But mainly Espinosa holds his nerve, maintaining a believable sense of the science and the setting as things get increasingly out of control. Each terrifying set piece is followed by a brief moment of silence in which the characters (and audience) catch their breath. This also allows them to add one back story detail per person, in an attempt to stir up some emotional connection. But it doesn't really matter once the violent mayhem kicks into gear again.

Criminal Review

Excellent

Almost criminally entertaining, this preposterous thriller mixes buckets of humour and emotion into the violent, twisty action. And Kevin Costner gets his best role in years, a remarkably complex character who's unpredictable and thoroughly engaging. So even as the story grows increasingly ridiculous, the film remains both gripping and a lot of fun.

It's set in London, where hot CIA operative Bill (Ryan Reynolds) is on the trail of an evil anarchist (Jordi Molla) when he's captured, tortured and killed. To stop an imminent attack, the CIA chief Wells (Gary Oldman) needs to know what Bill was working on. So he calls in scientist Franks (Tommy Lee Jones), who has been experimenting with transferring memories from brain to brain in animals. For his first human trial, he copies Bill's dying memories into the only suitable brain available on such short notice: psycho killer Jericho (Kevin Costner), who's serving a death sentence in prison. And now Jericho is desperate to sort out the chaos in his head.

Director Ariel Vromen (The Iceman) keeps everything moving so briskly that there isn't time to stop and think about how silly the premise is. All of these characters act on their basest impulses, never thinking through anything before they charge into the next situation. Viewers who try to make sense of the plot, or of London's geography, will find their brains aching like Jericho's. So it's better to just hang on and enjoy the ride. The film's edgy, urgent tone adds the illusion of depth amid the mindlessly brutal violence, while the formidable cast adds weight to a variety of rather thinly drawn characters, from Oldman's bluster to Jones' wry wit. Only Costner gets some real depth to play with, and Jericho is constantly surprising, mixing a killer instinct with brainy invention and some properly dark emotions. His scenes with Gal Gadot (as Bill's wife) are unnervingly tense and moving.

Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds: The Actors Who Went From Bad To Good Superhero Movies

Ben Affleck Ryan Reynolds Nicolas Cage Chris Evans

When Ben Affleck was announced as taking the role of Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, many comic book fans rolled their eyes. It wasn’t necessarily because they disliked Affleck, it was more because there was still a bad taste in their mouths from 2003’s Daredevil. But as Ryan Reynolds proved earlier this year, redemption in the world of superhero movies is entirely possible and these actors have certainly repented for their past comic book sins.

MTV Movie Awards: What Will Be Named Best Kiss And Best Fight Of The Year?

Mtv Movie Awards Leonardo Dicaprio Ryan Reynolds

The MTV Movie Award nominees are upon us and with it a few more stars that haven't yet been recognised for their 2015 efforts at the major film events so far. Of course, we went straight to the Best Fight and Best Kiss list - and we weren't disappointed.

Leonardo DiCaprioLeonardo Dicaprio can take on any bear

Of course, the number one contender for Best Fight is Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, who's character Hugh Glass fought a bear in 'The Revenant'; a jaw-dropping scene for anyone who got chance to see it at theaters. But then you've got Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa and Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky in 'Mad Max: Fury Road' which was pretty intense, with the former putting up a damn good fight against the ultimately glorious latter. More girl on guy action came with 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' - Rey (Daisy Ridley) vs. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) - which actually leads the list with 10 nominations.

Deadpool Was Ryan Reynolds' Passion Project

Ryan Reynolds

Not only does Reynolds have no regrets about The Green Lantern, but he felt strongly that Deadpool hadn't been given a fair shake in the Wolverine movie. So as a producer, Reynolds set out to make a stand-alone Deadpool film that stuck to the anarchic tone of the comics, starting with a strong script by Rob Liefeld and Rhett Reese and a dedicated director in Tim Miller. But the project got stuck in development for six long years.

Ryan Reynolds plays the masked superhero

"Honestly, I've got to give credit to Tim there, because he kept the faith in a way that I didn't," Reynolds says. "There was a time where I thought, 'I've just got to let it go.' It was like the worst relationship I'd ever been in. It was on-off, on-off. Then we created this test footage that I thought spoke volumes about the character and what we could do with it."

Deadpool Review

Very Good

Both the filmmakers and the characters on-screen are so pleased with themselves that this might just be the smuggest movie ever made. Thankfully, it's also very funny. It's a passion project for actor-producer Ryan Reynolds, who throws himself fully into his role as a snarky mercenary who becomes an indestructible superhero with nothing to lose. And in addition to a constant stream of irreverent humour, he underscores the film's snarkiness with some real emotion.

Reynolds plays Wade, a thug for hire who works out of a bar run by his comical pal Weasel (T.J. Miller), and when he meets fellow mercenary Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), it's love at first sight. The feisty pair match each other with sharp tongues and brutal physicality, but their romance is shaken when Wade is secretly diagnosed with end-stage cancer. His only hope lies in a shady treatment from the ropey Ajax (Ed Skrein) and his sidekick Angel Dust (Gina Carano), which turns out to literally be torture. Sure, it cures his cancer and sparks his innate mutant healing power, but it leaves him hideously scarred. As he sets out to get revenge, two young X-Men (Brianna Hildebrand's Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Stefan Kapcic's Colossus) try to recruit him to their cause. And Wade, now known as Deadpool, tries to work up the nerve to show Vanessa what's left of him.

All of this is revealed early on, as Wade's back-story is recounted in a series of flashbacks in the middle of a massive opening action sequence. And once we're caught up, the story heads into a succession of massive climactic action sequences. Fortunately, there are some quieter moments in between that are both hilarious and involving. Reynolds effortlessly bridges the film's wild mood swings. His sassy attitude and feisty physicality feed cleverly into his riveting chemistry with Baccarin, whose character starts off strongly before dissolving into the standard hackneyed girlfriend role.

Scarlett Johansson Wins The Internet And Second Esquire "Sexiest Woman Alive" Title

Scarlett Johansson George Clooney Brad Pitt Ryan Reynolds Johnny Depp

If you watch any film with Scarlett Johansson, it is abundantly clear that the lady is actually a talented actress, although all that tends to get overshadowed by her constantly topping of any and every “Sexiest Woman Alive” list around. Case in point: this month’s edition of Esquire, which has named ScarJo as its reigning queen of sex appeal for the second year in a row.

Scarlett Johansson, Don Jon New York Premiere
No one can argue that she doesn't deserve the title.

Of course, it’s not like the actress minds the repeat honor. She joins the likes of Johnny Depp, George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the exclusive two-timers club of Esquire. It is so exclusive, in fact, that Johansson is the first woman to be voted “sexiest” twice. Of course, she had to comment somehow – and she received the title with grace, poise and general awesomness, as well as a bit of brutal honesty. "I'm the only woman to win twice right? You know, I gotta hustle," Johansson tells the magazine. "I'm a 28-year-old woman in the movie business, right? Pretty soon the roles you're offered all become mothers. Then they just sort of stop. I have to hedge against that with work-theater, producing; this thing with Esquire."

Are Scarlett Johansson And Romain Dauriac Engaged?

Scarlett Johansson Ryan Reynolds

Scarlett Johansson recently told an interviewer that she is too caught up in her exciting career to think about settling down and starting a family, but what she didn't say in said interview is that she wasn't considering moving towards having a family-life some time soon. It looks like this might be the case though, as Scarlett has reportedly taken those first few steps towards becoming a family woman, by supposedly getting engaged to her boyfriend Romain Dauriac.

The Under the Skin beauty and her French journalist other half have apparently been engaged for about a month, according to People, and have been keeping the fact that they've taken the next step in their relationship to themselves throughout the summer. A source who claims to be close to the actress, 28, and Dauriac, 30, has told People that they have been planning their marriage like it is some clandestine operation and revealed "they're engaged and very happy."

Those who have commented positively on The Wolverine have said the film creates a diverse character which "pumps some feeling into the guy along with his muscles and steel talons" (Geoff Pevere - Globe and Mail). Others, such as Toronto Star's critic Raju Mudhar, have praised the production team for ensuring the "superhero/Asian crime drama mash-up" is successful.

Nightmare Weekend For Ryan Reynolds As 'The Conjuring' Bewitches Box-Office

Ryan Reynolds Guillermo Del Toro Jeff Bridges Patrick Wilson Vera Farmiga Adam Sandler

It was a weekend that Ryan Reynolds would probably rather forget. In fact, it he probably woke-up in cold sweats wondering whether he had another Green Lantern on his hands. The actor starred in two new releases this week, crime-comedy RIPD and the animated flick Turbo - both cost $130 million to make, both were expected to trouble the top of the box-office, both bombed.

RIPDDespite A Pretty Cool Premise, RIPD Failed To Fire At The Box Office

We say bombed: maybe that's a little unfair, though RIPD - also starring Jeff Bridges - took a paltry $12.8 million to sneak No.7 on the box-office, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Conjuring Manages To Scare It's Way To The Top Of The US Box Office

Vera Farmiga Ryan Reynolds James Wan Brad Pitt

The Conjuring is Universal's re-telling of a 'true' story about a family who move to a rural old farmhouse in New England to live the good life, only problem is; they're not alone at their new place, as they soon find out over the course of the fright-fest. In a crowded box office market the Vera Farmiga-starring horror film managed to scare off competition and emerge as the top grossing film this weekend.

Watch the trailer for The Conjuring

The James Wan (Saw, Insidious) directed flick won many plaudits from critic who praised the film as one of the years most genuinely frightening movies and clearly America took notice of this praise as thousands flocked through the turnstiles to make it a clear box office winner. In a market that is usually dominated by family films or action movies at this time of year, Universal gambled when they released the horror, but clearly this was a gamble that has paid off for the Hollywood powerhouse who recouped over $40 million in the film's first week.

Turbo Reviews - Will Ryan Reynolds Race His Way Into Families' Hearts?

Ryan Reynolds Paul Giamatti

Like many animated family movies, Turbo’s premise is simple: a snail dreams of being the fastest mollusc in the world, and intends to prove it by winning the Indie 500. There was a time when Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar could do no wrong; Toy Story, Shrek, Finding Nemo and Ratatouille fooled people into thinking every animation film was, by virtue, amazing.

Ryan ReynoldsReynolds provides the voice for our lead snail, Theo

Recently those times have changed, and we’re getting a little bored of what the studios have to offer. Wreck it Ralph provided some welcome relief, focussing upon the genre that essentially predicated animated cinema. So does Turbo have enough? We’ve already seen Despicable Me 2 and Monster’s University divide the critics this summer after all.

The Croods

This week's big global release is the DreamWorks animated prehistoric comedy-adventure The Croods, led by an all-star vocal cast including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. Look for a huge push for must-have spin-off merchandise for this one, as it's packed with cuddly creatures. And hope it does well at the box office, because it would make a great franchise too.

Doing the publicity rounds this week, Gerard Butler has been out promoting his new White House thriller Olympus Has Fallen. Flitting between New York and Los Angeles to appear on every chat show possible, it's no wonder that he was somewhat fed-up by the time he reached David Letterman's Manhattan studio. Of course, the paparazzi caught it on camera as he lost his patience with a fan trying to get multiple autographs. But he manages to recovers his usual charm.

Turbo Trailer

Turbo is a regular garden snail who, unlike his friends, is bored of living his life at a. well, snail's pace. As much as his friends and family try to convince him that his dreams of becoming a super-fast racer are, frankly, ridiculous and utterly fruitless, he refuses to give up hope and makes a wish that is set to change his life forever. After accidently finding himself taking a ride on the roof of the racing car of one of the fastest racers in the world, he finds himself flying into a tank of nitrous oxide which transforms his genetic code and makes him one of the fastest moving creatures on Earth, putting other wannabe snail racers to shame.

'Turbo' is the hilarious and delightful new animated movie from DreamWorks about the power of hope and determination in striving to achieve your dreams. It is David Soren's directorial feature film debut, though he has worked on a string of other animated flicks in other departments. He also co-wrote 'Turbo' with Darren Lemke ('Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Shrek Forever After') and Robert D. Siegel ('The Wrestler', 'Big Fan'). It is scheduled to be released in UK cinemas this Autumn on October 18th 2013.

The Croods Review

Excellent

Cleverly blending a rebellious teen comedy with an animated prehistoric adventure, this witty film wins us over with sharp characters who are written, voiced and drawn with plenty of personality. It may be yet another hyperactive, silly romp, but the attention to detail is extraordinary, and the rather overfamiliar message is genuinely inspiring.

The Crood family has survived the primordial chaos because dad Grug (Cage) keeps them in a constant state of fear, never letting them out of the cave after dark. There's just too much out there that wants to eat them! But teen daughter Eep (Stone) is restless to explore the world. Her mum Ugga (Keener) has her hands full tending to feral baby Sandy (Thom), lunkheaded pre-teen brother Thunk (Duke) and feisty Gran (Leachman), so Eep sneaks out in the middle of the night. There she meets Guy (Reynolds), a slightly more evolved human who has mastered fire and has what sound like radical ideas about survival. Grog is not happy about this at all. But when the world starts shifting around them, he has little choice but to allow his family to follow this new kid into what is clearly certain death.

Only of course, this being a comical cartoon, we know they'll all be fine, even though most of their adventures are seriously perilous. Filmmakers De Micco (Space Chimps) and Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon) create a lavishly imagined world of mash-up creatures that seem like lost links in the evolutionary chain. Gigantic predatory kittens, mouse-sized elephants, crocodile puppies and walking whales are not only hilarious, but they make us want to buy a plush version all our own. In other words, the film is a riot of marketing possibilities, including the promise of a long-running franchise.

Turbo is a garden snail with big dreams of becoming the speediest snail in the world. One day, his treasured dreams seem set to be realised when, following a freak incident, he develops an incredible superpower that allows him to move at a mind-blowing pace giving him the chance to truly compete at the IndyCar races and win the Indy 500 champion title for himself.

Top 10 Celebrity Weddings Of 2012: From Nutty Nuptials To Classy Ceremonies

Justin Timberlake Amber Tamblyn David Cross Questlove Matthew Mcconaughey Camila Alves Drew Barrymore Carey Mulligan Natalie Portman Ryan Reynolds Blake Lively Giovanni Ribisi Cat Power Dick Van Dyke Jessica Biel

There must have been something in the air this year because we literally had too many celebrity weddings to choose from for this list (sorry Alec Baldwin, you can stop reading now, you got bumped), and it was a tough job whittling it down to 10. So, who DID make the grade in our run-down 2012’s best nuptials?

10. Amber Tamblyn and David Cross

What was the highlight of actress Amber Tamblyn and actor David Cross’ wedding? Well, sadly, even Tamblyn’s stunning gown couldn’t upstage the antics of their unofficial photographer, Questlove. The happy snapper not only DJ’d at the wedding, but also decided to take a number of pics of the happy couple and stick them on his Instagram account. The Roots drummer revealed pretty much everything from the bride’s arrival, to the cutting of the cake, using the hashtag #weddinginthewoods. So, Amber and David – you just about made the grade, but you have your crazy DJ to thank for it.

Gossip Girl Blake Lively's Wedding Ring Gives Fans Something To Gossip About!

Blake Lively Ryan Reynolds

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have been officially married for over a month now, at which time it seems right for Lively to finally begin wearing her utterly incredible wedding ring (and about time too). She's managed to keep it well hidden or simply just not worn it while she's been out and about, but on the set of her hit show Gossip Girl, it seems the star is happy to flaunt her assets-and for once a comment like that about a woman is not meant to be crude.

Sporting a casual outfit of black denim, a Native-American style print jacket and black scarf, with a seemingly effortless and casual up-do of her blonde locks, Lively strolled casually and confidently on set, until she saw the cameras, at which point she tucked her hand away into her pocket, according to EntertainmentWise.

The rock is a 12 carat pink diamond that set Reynolds back an estimated $2m. Jeweller, Lorraine Schwartz worked with Reynolds who wanted to design the ring himself for her. A spokesperson for the jeweller said “'Ryan chose Lorraine Schwartz to help him find a flawless, light pink oval diamond. They worked together to design a custom setting in rose gold and pave diamonds with a nod to deco.”

Amber Tamblyn's Dress Steals The Day At Her Wedding To David Cross

Amber Tamblyn David Cross Questlove Ryan Reynolds Blake Lively America Ferrera Alexis Bledel Amy Poehler

Amber Tamblyn's dress was the real star of the show as the American actress and poet tied the knot with comedian and actor David Cross at a wonderful looking ceremony at the weekend. There was no press photography there, but who needs them when you've got DJ and music producer Questlove around to go snap-happy for you. The 41 year-old couldn't seem to help himself and on his Instagram, among other photos, there are a couple of glorious pictures of Tamblyn looking resplendent in a bright yellow, non-traditional dress.

In a classy looking location - pictures show Tamblyn stepping out of a boat with a lake and a lush-looking wood behind it - the couple were wedded with others in attendance including recently married Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively (also snapped by the ever reliable Questlove), whilst E! Online reports that Tamblyn's other 'Sisterhood Of The Travelling Pants' co-stars America Ferrera and Alexis Bledel were also there, as was Amy Poehler, who recently split from her husband Will Arnett. American rock band Yo La Tengo provided the music.

Questlove really got pretty close up to the bride and groom, with one very intimate shot showing the moment when the pair of them cut the cake. With a man like him around, the paparazzi should be looking over their shoulders.

The Croods - Trailer Trailer

The Croods are a prehistoric family of six who have always lived by patriarch Grug's rule of never venturing out of the cave they call a home. While his wife Ugga, his mother-in-law Gran, his son Thunk and his baby Sandy all stand by his wishes, his eldest daughter Eep becomes restless as her curiosity for what the outside world might be like overwhelms her despite her father's brutal warnings. Giving in to temptation, Eep sneaks out to explore and, to her father's terror, almost gets crushed in an avalanche caused by an earthquake which destroys their home. No-one is hurt; on the contrary, a whole new land is discovered filled with vibrant vegetation and exotic creatures. Homeless and with no excuse to avoid investigating, the family set out on a journey into this new world, with Grug still feeling profoundly reluctant.

This animation adventure is a wonderful story of family, discovery and bravery directed and written by the geniuses of several lovable CGI movies, Kirk De Micco ('Space Chimps', 'Racing Stripes') and Chris Sanders ('Lilo & Stitch', 'How to Train Your Dragon'). Not only is it heart-warming to watch, but you'll also never go long without laughing whatever your age. It will hit UK cinemas from March 22nd 2013.

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke & Cloris Leachman.

Ted Review

Very Good
Plying his trade in pop culture references and surprising punchlines, MacFarlane jumps the adult-oriented comedy bandwagon with a film that's smarter and funnier than most. It also has a surprisingly warm and serious thematic undercurrent.

After a childhood wish brought his teddy bear to life, John (Wahlberg) has become inseparable with his buddy Ted (voiced by Macfarlane). But John's girlfriend Lori (Kunis) is starting to think that a 35-year-old man and his fluffy pal should stop living like stoner-slackers. Worried about the foul-mouthed, womanising Ted's influence, she encourages John to make his own way in life, so they can be a proper couple. But separating Ted and John is more difficult than it looks.

Safe House Review

Good
With a cool Cape Town setting and constant sweaty, kinetic violence, this entire film plays like a wildly thrilling segment from a Bourne movie. It's sharply well-made and acted, but nothing about it remotely scratches beneath the surface.

Matt (Reynolds) is a low-level operative watching over the CIA's Cape Town safe house. After months of sitting around waiting, he finally gets to host a notorious guest: most-wanted rogue agent Tobin (Washington). Then violent thugs assault the place and Matt takes Tobin on the run, calling his handler (Gleeson) in Langley to get help from senior agents (Farmiga and Shepard). But there's clearly a leak in the ranks, and Tobin is obviously carrying something both the good guys and bad guys want.

The Change-up Review

OK
The director of Wedding Crashers and writers of The Hangover get together for a body-swap comedy that's as vulgar as you'd expect. But it also dips oddly into moralising slush, which kind of undermines any expected laugh fest.

While Dave (Bateman) has become a successful lawyer, complete with gorgeous wife Jamie (Mann) and three kids, his childhood friend Mitch (Reynolds) is living like a slacker with a string of random women. One night they wish they had each other's life and the next morning they wake up in each other's skin.

Reynolds To Return As Deadpool For X-men Spin-off

Ryan Reynolds MTV Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as Wade Wilson in a Deadpool spin-off film to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it has been announced.

The wisecracking mercenary is one of the most popular characters in the X-Men comics and a potential Deadpool spin-off had been mooted when Reynolds was cast in the role.

And after Fox announced it was commencing pre-production on a sequel to box office smash X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it has also been revealed that a Deadpool film is now in active development.

Nicknamed the 'Merc with a Mouth', Deadpool was born Wade Wilson and like fellow mutant Wolverine, saw his future irrevocably changed by enrolling in the shady Weapon X military programme.

After submitting himself to Weapon X in a bid to cure his terminal cancer, Wilson emerges as Deadpool, a mentally unstable mercenary with similar healing powers to Wolverine.

According to MTV.com, the Deadpool film will be a "complete exploration of this unique character — his origins, his emergence as the Merc with the Mouth".

Writers are currently being sought for the Deadpool film with Reynolds returning to a role he was seemingly destined to play after Deadpool was once described in the comics as a cross between a "Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds".

X-Men Origins: Wolverine topped the UK box office on Tuesday, having earned over $85 million in its opening weekend in the US.

Smokin' Aces Review

OK
A double-decker, monster-man sandwich of a movie with all the condiments dripping off and the tomatoes soaking through the bread, Joe Carnahan's Smokin' Aces grabs you by your lipstick-smudged collar and chucks you headfirst into a car-crash dizziness of crime, punishment, and bureau hobgob. As with most directors, Carnahan is eager to put the giddiness of his debut, Blood, Guts, Bullets & Octane, on top of the professionalism of 2002's brooding Narc, only too happy to throw in a who's-who of dynamite character actors to add flavor. Flipping scene-to-scene with a racecar driver's patience, Smokin' Aces quickly engages the viewer but just as quickly stuffs the plot with enough peripheral storylines to garner an Advil intermission. Carnahan, however, seems only the merrier to turn the mayhem up to eleven. Here's the scoop: Buddy "Aces" Israel (Jeremy Piven) has turned states evidence and has been marked to be deposited in an unmarked grave, heart removed and in the hand of the invalid Don of the Las Vegas mafia. Quicker than you can say Vincent Vega, a plethora of gun-totting, knife-brandishing assassins are descending on the Lake Tahoe hotel where Israel has commandeered the penthouse suite and filled it with enough blow and prostitutes to garner a Motley Crue reunion gig. There's a sexually-ambivalent pair of Jackie Brown's (scene-stealers Alicia Keys and Taraji P. Henson), a trio of Nazi-punk, south-bred Mad Max's (led by dirtied-up pretty-boy Chris Pine), a relentless torture artist (Nestor Carbonell), and a superbly vicious Ethan Hunt-type mask-wearer named Lazlo Soot (Tommy Flanagan). Oh, and not to mention a bail bondsman and two ex-cops (Ben Affleck, Peter Berg, and Martin Henderson) hired by a Herpes-positive lawyer (Justin Bateman).Israel's right-hand man Sir Ivy (hip-hop ingénue Common in a solid acting debut) has suspicions on Buddy's loyalty as the bureau chief (Andy Garcia, his cheeks tight enough to brandish a diamond ring from a lump of coal) deliberates on whether Buddy is essential to the FBI's case or not. To fast-track the proceedings, two FBI agents are sent to pick Israel up, played with welcome integrity by Ray Liotta and Ryan Reynolds. This is all confounded by a paint-by-numbers mystery about the Las Vegas Don's origins and his hand in an FBI agent's death. Not for nothing, Carnahan's big mess has a stunningly concise tone to it, not trashy enough to be campy and not serious enough to be harshly considered. There's no denying, however, that Smokin' Aces is a backpedal from the grimy cop paranoia of its predecessor. Ultimately, many of the characters are superfluous to the kinetic frenzy of the film and come off as cameos (Bateman, Affleck, and a surprise Matthew Fox head the list). This also lends itself to a problem of absurdly curt storylines that seem to mass into a rubber-band ball of narratives. That being said, it's still a kick to watch Carnahan go all in, pulling out some primo action scenes including a climactic shoot-out that ends with an assassin taking a chainsaw up the keister. The effect sprays about as much bodily fluid to the ironically-named Nomad hotel as one could imagine from a Tarantino disciple with time and money on his hands.Aces high.

The In-Laws (2003) Review

Excellent
Has Michael Douglas found The Fountain of Youth in Catherine Zeta-Jones? Since the Gordon Gekko days of Wall Street fame, his body is certainly a little less nimble, his face a little more wrinkled, and his hair a shade too light. But the guy looks great, and he's once again an action hero. That bumps him up from "silver spoon" to "ageless wonder" in the Hollywood classification book - ever closer to the royalty of perennial good lookers Redford and Basinger.

In The In-Laws (based on the 1979 film of the same name), like most other Michael Douglas vehicles, his gaunt face is rarely off the camera. Wisely, director Andrew Fleming inserts a hilarious Albert Brooks as the perfect remedy for Douglas's self-absorption.

Buddy "Aces" Israel (Jeremy Piven) is a Vegas card sharp come gangster and former member of the La Cosa Nostra (LCN), one of the largest criminal organizations in the United States. In exchange for a vanishing act with Witness Protection, Israel (who is currently hiding out in the penthouse of The Nomad Casino in Lake Tahoe with his posse of bodyguards and hookers), has agreed to testify against his former mentor, Primo Sparazza, and the LCN.

The Amityville Horror Review

Bad
The original "Amityville Horror"bored critics in 1979, but created a box office bonanza and spawned sevensequels.

Now the studios have commissioned a straight-ahead remake. After all, why go to the bother of writing new stories, or for that matter, coming up with material for another sequel? This way no one needs to thinkof anything at all.

Written by Scott Kosar (the 2003 "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"remake), the new "Amityville Horror" begins in 1974 with a flashbackto the catalyst murders, steeped in darkness and lit by intermittent, flickeringflashes of lightning.

A year later, the Lutz family moves into the creepy housewith the big eye-like windows. George (RyanReynolds) is the second husband of Kathy (MelissaGeorge), who has three children from a previous marriage.

National Lampoon's Van Wilder Review

OK

Have campus comedies really reached the point where fashionable, ante-upping gross-out gags are obligatory? I mean, do we really need a movie in which bulldog semen is served in pastries to unsuspecting frat jerks?

I ask only because "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" has such hilariously droll dialogue and such a witty, charismatic lead in Ryan Reynolds (of TV's "Two Guys and a Girl") that it's just bursting with untapped crafty comic energy that has been redirected toward the lowest of the lowbrow.

Reynolds emits an aura of smarmy charm in the title role of consummate collegiate slacker Van Wilder who, after seven years as Big Man On Campus and $40,000 in tuition, has been cut off by his fed-up father (played by Tim Matheson in one of the flick's many nods to "Animal House").

The In-Laws Review

OK

With its overblown script striving for maximum wackiness and cheap laughs, the espionage-and-matrimony comedy "The In-Laws" walks a thin line between funny and dumb in an inebriated stupor. Butt-crack gags and unlikely explosions are the order of the day. But a threesome of smarter-than-the-screenplay comedic performances keep the flick punchy enough to earn fairly steady smiles.

Albert Brooks stars as an anxiety-ridden podiatrist who considers a little foot fungus one of the most dangerous things in the world. Needless to say, he's in way over his head when, while trying to micro-manage his daughter's wedding plans, he stumbles onto a covert operation of international intrigue being led by the father of the groom (Michael Douglas), a loose-cannon undercover CIA agent.

Brooks provides a running narrative of amusing neuroses as he's knocked out and dragged along on a mission so he doesn't blow Douglas's cover as the screwy spook tries to prevent an effeminate French arms dealer (David Suchet) from selling a stolen nuclear stealth submarine. With masked insanity in his eyes and caffeine in his bloodstream, Douglas rides a comically uneven keel as the obnoxious daredevil spy of questionable sanity who does everything by the seat of his pants, including trying to negotiate with bad guys in a restaurant bathroom while having his first dinner with his future in-laws.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle Review

Good

There is a key to good'n'stupid lowbrow comedy that few lowbrow moviemakers understand, and it is this: If you have a thin but serviceable premise upon which to build cheap, vulgar, tasteless, but side-splitting dumb gags, don't slap together some insipid story clogged with clichés to prop it up -- just run with what you've got.

Don't turn your movie into Adam Sandler or Rob Schneider fodder, full of insulting attempts to make audiences genuinely feel for your imbecile heroes and wishy-washy life lessons for your stock characters to learn in the last act. Don't be an "American Pie" and backpedal on your vulgarity at the last minute with a hypocritical-apology "happy" ending.

Instead, be proudly, shamelessly, flippantly stupid, like "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," in which two recent-grad, odd-couple roommates don't discover anything about themselves, they never see any "bigger picture," and they don't grow up at all. They just get stoned out of their gourds on a Friday night, develop the munchies for those famous square hamburgers from the titular eastern-U.S. fast food joint, and spend the rest of the picture having preposterous misadventures while driving all over New Jersey hunting for the nearest franchise location.

Blade: Trinity Review

Bad

A gratuitous wise-cracking sidekick and a tummy-baring, tight-top-wearing eye-candy vampire hunter have been added to the cast of the sequel "Blade: Trinity," but it's the gal (Jessica Biel) who gets most of the laughs, albeit unintentionally, with her lethargic, ludicrously inept kung-fu fighting.

Playing the hitherto unknown hottie daughter of Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) -- that crusty veteran of the underground vampire wars who is mentor to the titular half-vamp Wesley Snipes in all three "Blade" pictures -- Biel can't swing a convincing punch or kick to save her life.

But giving Biel a run for her money as the movie's most absurd character is ironic indie-flick darling Parker Posey, disastrously cast against type as the leader of yet another tiresome uber-Goth vampire faction that pouts around in skyscraper hideouts when they're not busy reviving their millennia-old master.
