Deadpool is on top of the US box office for the second week running and the movie looks set to continue breaking records worldwide. The superhero flick, starring Ryan Reynolds, grossed $55 million domestically in its second weekend, to bring its North American total to $235.4 million in just nine days of release.

The movie now looks set to become the highest grossing R-rated movie in history, according to The Hollywood Reporter eclipsing The Matrix Reloaded which took $742.1 million in 2003. It’s already the fasted R-rated movie to pass the $200 million mark at the box office and has also beaten Fifty Shades of Grey, which was released last year.

Worldwide the film has grossed more than $491 million, including opening to $12.1 million in South Korea and so far taking over $36.9 million in the UK. "Deadpool has become a cultural phenomenon with all audiences that is resonating across the globe," Fox’s domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson told THR.

Elsewhere at the US box office, Kung Fu Panda 3 held onto the number two spot in its fourth week of release, taking $12.5 million to bring its total haul to $117 million. At number three was new entry Risen, a faith based film starring Joseph Fiennes about a Roman solider’s search for the body of Jesus following his alleged resurrection.

Risen debuted with a $11.8 million total. Another new entry at number four was The Witch which entered the top five with $8.7 million. The top five was then rounded off with comedy How To Be Single, which brought in $8.2 million in its second week.
