Is RZA's 'The Man With The Iron Fists' The Best, Worst, Movie Ever?

RZA Russell Crowe

RZA has made his directorial debut with The Man With The Iron Fists, an epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone hero in nineteenth century China. You didn't expect the Wu-Tang Clan man was going to make this movie now did you?

The movie stars Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu and hits theaters this weekend on the back of quiet praise. It's difficult to predict how the film will fare at the box-office, though most critics were fairly complimentary of RZA's foray into the movie business. Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times seemed pretty dumfounded by the whole thing, though suggested that TMWTIF "may just be one of the best bad movies ever." Manohla Dargis of the New York Times attempted to elaborate, writing, "As erratically enjoyable as it is consistently ridiculous, the martial arts pastiche The Man With the Iron Fists is the latest evidence that the vogue for neo-exploitation cinema shows no sign of flagging." Scott Bowles of USA Today wasn't taken in by the whole rapper-turned-director thing, writing, quite damningly, "Goes a long way in demonstrating that a bad movie with big names is still a bad movie. Just prettier." Kyle Smith of the New York Post provided this week's obligatory facetious review, offering, "At 96 minutes it is exactly 93 1/2 minutes too long.

So, probably enough there to tempt cinemagoers into seeing The Man With The Iron Fists this weekend. Let us know what you thought of the movie.

RZA Swaps Rapping For Film Directing With The Man With The Iron Fists

RZA

Rapper-turned-filmmaker RZA began acting in 1999 with Jim Jarmusch's "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai," but has taken his cinematic career one step further, by directing, co-writing and starring in "The Man With the Iron Fists," which opens today (November, 1)

Working as part of a rap group, with big personalities vying for positions, seems to have strengthened RZA's skillset as a director: "There was a lot of testosterone on the set," RZA told MYSA. "Everybody thinks they're the toughest. Everybody thinks they're handsome. Everybody thinks what they do is the best way to do it. Some friction built up, but I said, 'Listen, y'all ... would you believe Ghostface and Raekwon (prominent Wu-Tang rappers) were enemies before becoming one of the best rap combinations ever? I told them how Meth (Method Man) and Rae would battle. Dealing with those personalities helped me in dealing with actors."

After being enlisted by Tarantino to provide the soundtrack for his 2003 kung fu revenge caper "Kill Bill," RZA became a regular presence on the director's sets and has visited every Tarantino production since then. "I started noticing he was checking how you do it: Me working with the cinematographer, how you do a fight scene in a practical sense," Tarantino told The LA Times of RZA's M.O. in 2010. "He'd sit on a box somewhere, writing on a sketch pad and taking it all in."

RZA To Follow Up ‘Man With The Iron Fists’ With Genghis Khan Biopic

RZA John Milius

Wu Tang leader turned actor turned director RZA will follow-up his directorial debut The Man With the Iron Fists with a biopic on Mongol leader Genghis Kahn, the Hollywood Reporter has revealed.

RZA is teaming up with filmmaker John Milius to bring Genghis Khan to the big screen, with Milius providing the massive screenplay and RZA stepping behind the camera again. The hip-hop legend has another project up his sleeves too, as it has also been announced that he will helm the upcoming action thriller No Man’s Land.

The proposed biopic has been in the pipeline for years now, with Milius having written the screenplay and signing on as executive producer for some time now. It is with the announcement that RZA will direct that the film has finally been given some kind of confirmation that it will come into fruition in the near future, although an exact date has not been given yet. Andre Morgan and Peter Lam have signed on to produce the project, with filming expected to begin next year in China, where RZA filmed most of TMWTIF.
