Butch Cassidy is infamous for being a bank and train robber and the leader of the Wild Bunch Gang, which included the criminals Elzy Lay, George Curry, Laura Bullion and Harry Tracy. He is perhaps well known for committing his crimes with Harry Longabaugh, also known as the Sundance Kid and Longabaugh's girlfriend Etta Place.
Although Butch Cassidy allegedly died in a shootout in 1908, this film imagines what Butch's later years would have panned out if he survived the shootout. Now in his sixties, Butch has retired to Bolivia, where he spends his quiet days under the name James Blackthorn. Just as he decides to return the US and spend his remaining days living in solitude there, a man runs onto his property.
His name is Eduardo Apodaca and he's on the run from the law. When asked why he's on the run, Eduardo reveals he has stolen 50,000 dollars. Butch feels sorry for the young man and plots to help him evade the law.
