Sam Smith Wants His Music To Appeal To Everyone, Not Just Gay Fans

Sam Smith

Sam Smith is well known in the music industry for always having been open with his sexuality, and that's something that he's proud to be an icon for. However, he also admits that he wants to be role model for everyone out there - not just gay men.

Sam SmithSam Smith wants to represent everyone who listens to his music

Confessing that he'd been out as gay since the tender age of 10, the 'Writings On The Wall' singer said in an interview that he was happy to represent the LGBT community, as long as that meant he could represent other people as well. 'There's nothing in my life that I'm prouder of', Smith told NME about coming out as a young boy. '[But] I didn't want [my] album to appeal to just one community, I wanted it to appeal to all of them. I wanted anyone, gay or straight, to be able to relate to me singing about men, like I was able to relate to Stevie Wonder or John Legend singing about girls.'

Sam Smith Receives Two Guinness World Records At Once

Sam Smith James Bond

British singer Sam Smith has had a pretty incredible 18 months, rocketing to international superstardom with his debut album, and now he’s able to add not just one, but TWO Guinness World Records to his growing list of accolades.

The pair of records were given to him to honour his James Bond theme tune, ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, becoming the first such 007 track to reach the top of the UK Singles Chart earlier this month, and the second was to acknowledge his first album In The Lonely Hour staying in the Top Ten of the UK Albums Chart for the longest consecutive amount of weeks.

Since it was released on May 26th last year, the album has, to date, spent 69 weeks in a row inside the Top Ten, passing the previous record held by Emeli Sande for her album Our Version of Events (63 weeks) more than a month ago.

Sam Smith Explains His 'Timelessly Classic' Take On James Bond Theme

Sam Smith James Bond

Sam Smith confesses he wanted to abandon the funky pop anthems for his take on the new James Bond theme for 'Spectre', and release a track that was memorable enough to be associated with the franchise rather than something that reflected himself. The result is the orchestral 'Writing's On The Wall'.

Sam Smith promoSam Smith wanted Bond theme to be 'classic'

The 23-year-old singer reveals that, instead of taking on the usual pop aesthetic that has made him a success thus far, he wanted to create something 'timelessly classic' for 'Spectre'. Thus, it's not a driving rhythm or melancholic balladry we have here, but soaring cinematic soundscapes; the perfect combination of harmonic strings, building piano and a crescendo of a voice that goes from one end of Smith's range to the another quite remarkably. It's an impressive change in direction, perhaps surprisingly so in that he enlisted the help of trusted friend and producer Jimmy Napes (who previously worked on hits 'Stay With Me' and 'Lay Me Down') as well as Disclosure who brought themselves and Smith to worldwide attention with their 2012 single 'Latch'. A sound very different from anything we've heard from these guys so far.

Sam Smith's 'Spectre' Theme Proves Divisive Among Fans

Sam Smith Adele Nick Grimshaw

Sam Smith’s eagerly anticipated theme tune to the new Bond movie Spectre has been splitting opinions since it was unveiled earlier this morning. ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ was unveiled on BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show on Friday (September 25th) and was uploaded to Spotify at the same time.

A four-and-a-half minute track of pretty classical construction, it sees Smith cover pretty much his full vocal range and is set to sweeping, widescreen orchestral music. While it is distinctive, some listeners have reacted negatively, with one Twitter user calling it the “worst Bond theme ever”. Surely not, as anybody with ears will recall Madonna’s risible ‘Die Another Day’
