"OFFICIALLY sold 1 MILLION copies of In The Lonely Hour! To say I am ecstatic is a huge understatement. Thank you so much to every single person who has purchased my album," Smith said in a statement.

By midnight last night, the album had sold 1.007 million copies in the UK - the second album to pass the milestone this year, after Ed Sheeran's X. In the US, only Smith, Taylor Swift and the Frozen soundtrack have passed the million mark.

2014 is now the first year since 2011 to have more than one album passing the one million mark. On that occasions, Adele's 21 and 19, Michael Buble's Christmas and Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans all sold over 1 million.

If reports are correct - Smith's fame will continue to grow on both sides of the Atlantic. Insiders working on the new James Bond film suggest Smith has already signed up to sing the official theme song. A representative for the British singer said it was "not confirmed".
