British singer Sam Smith has took the music industry by storm in 2014 and garnered a global fan base after the release of his first album, 'In the Lonely Hour' (released May 26th), which included the hit singles, 'Money on My Mind' and 'Stay With Me.'

But as the 22-year-old star, who is openly gay, tries to bask in all his success, a lot of the attention surrounding the award-winning singer only focuses on his sexuality, and whether or not he will be an influential figure within the gay community.

"I'm a singer and a songwriter. I get upset sometimes because I don't talk about it too much," he shared on Monday's Ellen DeGeneres Show. "People say, 'he doesn't want to be a spokesperson for the gay community.' I do, of course I do."

He added, "I want to be a spokesperson for everyone. Ya know, straight people, gay people, bisexual. I don't want to be limited."

Smith's brave decision to publically come out was rather remarkable as he chose to do so before the release of his debut album. Although some were concerned this would hurt his young career, the American Music Award winner wasn't hesitant in the slightest.

"I wanted to do it before because if I did it afterwards, people probably would have thought I was lying just to sell records," he told DeGeneres.

As of right now, Smith is very grateful for the support of his fans and the success he has received, but he still has a lot growing up to do - in and out of the music industry. "I'm 22 as well," he said. "I'm still trying to figure everything out."
