British singer Sam Smith has had a pretty incredible 18 months, rocketing to international superstardom with his debut album, and now he’s able to add not just one, but TWO Guinness World Records to his growing list of accolades.

The pair of records were given to him to honour his James Bond theme tune, ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, becoming the first such 007 track to reach the top of the UK Singles Chart earlier this month, and the second was to acknowledge his first album In The Lonely Hour staying in the Top Ten of the UK Albums Chart for the longest consecutive amount of weeks.

Since it was released on May 26th last year, the album has, to date, spent 69 weeks in a row inside the Top Ten, passing the previous record held by Emeli Sande for her album Our Version of Events (63 weeks) more than a month ago.

The 23 year old singer accepted both awards on Monday (October 19th), and said 'This is so amazing! It's such an honour to be recognised by Guinness World Records.”

“It's been an unbelievable eighteen months - the album exceeded even my wildest dreams thanks to the incredible support of my fans, and to record the first ever Bond theme to reach No 1 in the UK is a real privilege.”

‘Writing’s On The Wall’, from the imminently released 24th Bond movie Spectre, is the first theme tune to be recorded by a British male solo artist since Tom Jones sang ‘Thunderball’ in 1964. Last month, it outsold Justin Bieber by 13,000 copies to become the first 007 theme to top the charts in Britain (only Duran Duran's 1985 'A View To A Kill' has done so in the United States).

Craig Glenday, the editor-in-chief of the Guinness World Records, said in reaction: “Sam Smith has had an incredible impact on the music industry since his debut album first hit the charts last year and the longevity of its stay is truly astonishing.”

"His second Guinness World Records title is equally as impressive as many talented artists for over half a century have tried and failed to write a James Bond theme and get it to the top of the charts, so what Sam has achieved will always be remembered in the record books.”
