Captain America: The Winter Soldier is going to be big. Very big.
Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers for another Captain America fix and Marvel's sequel to the 2011 movie, The Winter Soldier, has scored strong reviews ahead of its release next week. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo's movie - also starring Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson and Anthony Mackie - left a couple of critics dishing out some huge, huge kudos.
Chris Evans as Captain America
"Takes the bold (for Marvel) step of reducing CGI spectacle to a relative minimum in favor of reviving the pleasures of hard-driving old-school action, surprising character development and intriguing suspense," said Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter.
"Chockfull of the breathless cliffhangers dictated by the genre, but equally rich in the quiet, tender character moments that made the first film unique among recent Marvel fare ..." said Scott Foundas of Variety.
"The film is everything anyone could want from a comic book movie, and will stand as one of the best of all time," said Eric Eisenberg of CinemaBlend.com
"...the best action film out of the entire Marvel movie universe so far, bar none," said Drew McWeeney of HitFix.com.
Scarlett Johansson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The Russo brothers, best known for their television work on 'Community' and 'Arrested Development,' were considered surprise choices to continue Captain America's journey though appear to have risen to the challenge. In conversation with Collider, the Russo's spoke of the difficulty of landing big projects in Hollywood.
"My brother and I, when we first got into the business, tried to get the rights to The Lord of the Rings," said Joe, "There was a period in the 90s when they were available for a second. We just know how difficult it is to take that kind of material and turn it into something of that scale."
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for release in the UK on March 26, and in the US on April 4, 2014.
