Scarlett Johansson’s new sci-fi action thriller, Lucy, came out over the weekend (25th July) and audiences seem to have given it a big tick of approval. Here are ten reasons to go and see it.

Scarlett JohanssonScarlett Johansson plays the titular character in Lucy

The Black Widow - Scarlett Johansson showed us how she can fight with the big boys as Black Widow in the Marvel comic movie adaptations and her turn as superhuman Lucy only compounds her new action heroine status further.

Hercules - With exceptional Herculean force, Lucy bounded over Hercules to claim the top spot at the box office on its opening weekend.

The main star Scarlett Johansson is in almost every scene as the titular character and she’s very good.

Even the critics can’t dismiss it - While there are few critics celebrating this as a flawless film, Lucy’s reviewers have had to admit that for any negatives in its narrative, the positives of fun cannot be overlooked.

Luc Besson is very capable French director - Luc Besson, steers the film, providing audiences with a ‘vintage Besson’ title character and ‘trippy, candy-coloured visuals [that] hark back to the outre grandiloquence of 1997’s The Fifth Element’.

Oldboy is in it - The performance of the South Korean star of the show, Choi Min-sik, has been hailed in the press of his native country as the ‘saviour of the film’. While his turn here as the villain may not be the main reason audiences flock to see it, it may encourage some to go and see his best-known film, mystery-thriller, Oldboy, which (although not for the faint-hearted) is definitely worth a watch.

Audiences are intrigued - While it may have so far only received a 57% positive review rating from critics, audiences have not been put off and 98% of Rotten Tomatoes users want to watch the film.

Is France the new America? - The film branches out of American studios and the majority of it was filmed at Luc Besson’s studio complex, Cité du Cinéma, in Saint-Denis, north of Paris.

Could there be a sequel? - With the film coming in at a mere $40 million, distributor Universal Pictures are likely to make a very tidy profit. And with Universal sponsoring sequel after sequel, could this sure-fire cheapie be in line for a reprisal?
