This morning we were treated to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations. It's one of the biggest award ceremonies on the movie calendar and, well, it's kind of a big deal. Forget the Globes - this is the ceremony that best predicts what's going to happen at the Oscars, with Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, Crash, Return of the King, Slumdog Millionaire, No Country For Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, The King's Speech and Argo all winning the best ensemble cast award before going on to win best picture at the Academy Awards.

Obviously, we're not really interested in who got nominated today - we want to know who got snubbed, right? Well, this article probably isn't going to be too lengthy given that most of the nominations announcement was fairly predictable.

However, one notable absentee from the best actor list was Robert Redford for his exquisite one-man performance in All is Lost. The movie was actually nominated for the stunt ensemble (and Redford did most of the stunts) but there was nothing for the veteran actor who has been talked about in Oscar circles.

To be fair to the SAG's, the lead actor category is littered with strong performances and the likes of Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Christian Bale (American Hustle), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) also missed out.

That category will be contested between Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Forest Whitaker (The Butler), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) and Matthew Mcconaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).

The lead actress category pretty much played out as we thought with Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) the massive favorite. She'll go up against Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena), Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks). It's likely that the SAG nominations for this category will be exactly the same come the Oscars and it's likely to be a two-horse race between Blanchett and Thompson.

In terms of the best ensemble cast award (the equivalent of the best picture), Lee Daniels' The Butler will go up against 12 Years a Slave, August: Osage County, Dallas Buyers Club and American Hustle. No real dramas here, apart from possibly the exclusion of The Wolf of Wall Street, but Martin Scorsese's movie hasn't been seen enough by the nomination committee.

The SAG Awards will be broadcast live on January 18, 2014.
