At this 87th annual Academy Awards, which took place on February 22nd, Sean Penn caused controversy when he presented the Oscar for Best Picture to Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

"Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" Penn said before announcing the 51-year-old filmmaker's latest movie 'Birdman' as the winner.

The veteran actor finally addressed the matter during a promo tour of his new movie 'The Gunman' in Beverly Hills this past weekend, where he bluntly said, "I have absolutely no apologies."

"I'm always surprised by flagrant stupidity. I keep having more hope," he explained. "The fact is that I understand it. I see it all the time. When somebody sees the opportunity to frame something in the comfort that it will be common that they can do that and they can get a group to look at them and that they will take on those positions and never really think about what it was."

"In fact, I have a big (expletive) you for every...anybody who is so stupid not to have gotten the irony when you've got a country that is so xenophobic," he added. "If they had their way, you wouldn't have great filmmakers like Alejandro working in this country. Thank god we do."

Penn went on to reveal that his remarks were just a personal joke between the pair. "There's a little inside humor with he and I where I know, and wanted to know, that he would be the first person in that room to know that his film won," he said.

Immediately after the award ceremony, Inarritu even clarified that he wasn't at all offended by Penn's remarks.

"I found it hilarious," he said backstage. "You know, Sean and I have that kind of brutal relation where only true friendship can survive."

"When I was directing him in '21 Grams,' he was always making jokes about that, and I make on him a lot of very tough jokes that I will not tell you" he added. "Anyway, we have that kind of relation, of old friendship. I didn't find it offensive. I think it was very funny, in my personal view."
