On Sunday, Ann Hornaday wrote that "mass entertainment has been overwhelmingly controlled by white men, whose escapist fantasies so often revolve around vigilantism and sexual wish-fulfilment (often, if not always, featuring a steady through-line of casual misogyny)."

"How many students watch outsized frat-boy fantasies like Bad Neighbours and feel, as Rodger did, unjustly shut-out of college life that should be full of 'sex and fun and pleasure'?" she continued. "How many men, raised on a steady diet of Judd Apatow comedies in which the shlubby arrested adolescent always gets the girl, find that those happy endings constantly elude them and conclude, "It's not fair"?"

Rogen has reeled at Hornaday's piece, tweeting "I find your article horribly insulting and misinformed.how dare you imply that me getting girls in movies caused a lunatic to go on a rampage." Famed comedy director Judd Apatow soon joined in with Rogen's criticism of Hornaday's writings, saying "She uses tragedy to promote herself with idiotic thoughts."

The 22 year-old son of Hunger Games assistant director Peter Rodger emailed a 140 page manifesto to 30 people, including his mother, father and former teachers, before he carried out the six killings in the student beach community of Isla Vista and left 13 injured. Rodger also uploaded a six minute video manifesto to YouTube, proclaiming that the "day of retribution" had arrived.

Filmed at the wheel of the car that Rodger eventually died in, the video shows the student lamenting his loneliness since hitting puberty and his perceived rejection by women, and vowing revenge against humanity.
