This was not part of the plan for Sony. It's big-budget superhero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may well have been toppled from the top spot at the box-office after just one week, with Seth Rogen's stonking comedy Neighbors set to take $45 million for the three day weekend.

NeighborsZac Efron is 'Neighbors'

According to Friday afternoon estimate from Variety, the frat-comedy also starring Zac Efron took around $18 million on its first day, including $2.56 million for Thursday late night shows. That would put Neighbors on track for $41 million-$45 million, enough to beat Spider-Man which was tracking for around $12 million on Friday for an overall total of around $40 million.

The R-rated Neighbors stars Seth Rogen and Roe Byrne as new parents at odds with the fraternity that moves in next door, headed by the obnoxious leader, played by Efron. It performed strongly with the critics and has been gaining traction for Universal since it premiered at South by Southwest in March. It also establishes Rogen as one of the most in-demand comedy actor-writers in the world.

"Rogen's always a dominating presence, but [Byrne], who showed her comic chops in Bridesmaids, comes close to stealing the movie here, in an uncorked performance full of volatile, liberating mischief," said Liam Lacey of the Globe and Mail.

Elsewhere at the box-office, Cameron Diaz's The Other Woman looks likely to finish third with $9 million for its third week. The comedy has grossed $52 million over it first two weeks - a big success for Fox.

Sony-TriStar's faith-based family comedy Mom's Night Out took around $2.2 million on Friday for an opening weekend taking of around $6 million.
