To celebrate the release of Divergent on digital download, DVD and Blu-ray we are giving you the opportunity to win a copy of the DVD and the amazing soundtrack featuring the work of Ellie Goulding

Win Divergent On DVD With The Soundtrack

The hit action flick Divergent hit cinemas with a bang earlier this year. Adapted from the popular trilogy of novels by Veronica Roth and set within a dystopian, post apocalyptic Chicago with a population divided into distinct factions based on their human virtues, it was only a matter of time until words were transformed into a slick, action packed big screen adaptation.

The young and talented Shailene Woodley was the actress carefully selected to tell the thrilling story of Tris Prior who learns that she is Divergent and therefore will never be able to fit into any of these factions whilst quickly learning that there is a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.

Miles Teller J.K Simmons Analeigh Tipton Kate Mara Jamie Bell Michael B. Jordan Shailene Woodley

Miles Teller first gained our attention as hedonistic ladies man Sutter in the 2013 rom-com 'The Spectacular Now', before going on to another comedy love story 'That Awkward Moment' earlier this year. Now, Miles Teller is exploring a range of projects over the coming months.

He was convincing as a rom-com fixture until he played the nasty piece of work Peter in 'Divergent', so now we're pretty sure his versatility renders him unpredictable. One look at his upcoming movie projects and you'd never think they were all starring the same guy.

The Fault In Our Stars Review

OK

Based on the beloved novel by John Green, this film is so squarely slanted toward teen girls that it is likely to annoy everyone else. Written and directed in a way that never allows even a hint of ambiguity, each scene and line of dialogue is on-the-nose, pushing the audience to a specific emotional response. This of course leaves everything feeling manipulative and false. Even so, the movie is rescued by another wonderfully layered performance from Shailene Woodley.

She plays the 17-year-old Hazel, who has been dealing with aggressive cancer for three years and has only just been stabilised by a breakthrough treatment. As she still needs to carry oxygen to breathe properly, her parents (Laura Dern and Sam Trammell) are understandably protective, but she's happy to get out on her own whenever possible. Then in a support group she meets 18-year-old cancer survivor Gus (Ansel Elgort), who is immediately smitten with her and flirts so aggressively that she finally agrees to be his friend, but nothing more. As she hangs out with Gus and his pal Isaac (Nat Wolff), another cancer patient, she begins to open up to her innermost dreams. So she goes along with a make-a-wish plan to travel to Amsterdam with Gus and her mother to meet the author (Willem Dafoe) of her favourite novel. And the trip changes her life in several unexpected ways.

Sensitive audience members will be sobbing from the beginning to the end of this film, simply because director Josh Boone tells them to. More cynical viewers will find it impossible to believe anything on-screen. This isn't because the plot is bad (it's actually quite thoughtful and provocative) or the actors get their performances wrong. It's because Boone and the screenwriters can't resist punching every note as loudly as they can. It's been so tidily shaped into a cinematic structure that everything feels fake, which makes it impossible for the actors to create characters who could exist anywhere besides in a movie.

Battle Of The Tear-Jerkers: Will 'If I Stay' Prove As Popular As 'The Fault In Our Stars'?

Chloe Moretz Shailene Woodley

In its opening weekend Shailene Woodley’s new film The Fault in our Stars has taken over $48 million. Directed by Josh Boone and starring Woodley and Willem Defoe, the book is based on the young adult novel of the same name. Centred around Hazel, a 16-year-old cancer patient, played by Woodley, and the relationship she forms with 17-year-old Augustus Waters, an amputee and ex-basketball player, the film is widely considered to be the winner of tear-jerker of the year.

If I Stay The Fault In Our Stars Shailene Woodley has been highly praised for her performance as Hazel in The Fault in our Stars

Woodley has been praised for her performance while the film on the whole has won over the critics. Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers wrote in his review of the film: “It’s a fresh, lively love story, brimming with humor and heartbreak, and lived to the heights by Shailene Woodley, a sublime actress with a resume that pretty much proves she’s incapable of making a false move on camera.”

'The Fault In Our Stars' Takes $48 Million To Sink 'Edge Of Tomorrow'

Shailene Woodley Tom Cruise

The slow-burning publicity campaign for Fault in Our Stars worked perfectly. The teen-romance had started pulling in reviews about a year ago, but it finally got its full U.S release on Friday (June 6, 2014) and pulled in $48 million. Tom Cruise's well-received blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow could only manage $29.1 million.

Adoring Fans Raise "The Fault In Our Stars" To Box Office Success, While "Edge Of Tomorrow" Falters

The Fault In Our Stars seems to be emerging as the winner of this weekend’s box office race, after it made teens across the US (and the world) bawl their eyes out for three solid days. That’s what the tweets say, anyway. The film tells the story of a pair of teens living with cancer – the clever and self-deprecating Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) and the disarmingly lovable Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort). As the two meet, fall in love and go on a life-changing trip together, they discover some truths about life, love and the meaning of it all.. As for the box office stats, well, those are nothing to cry about.

The Fault In Our Stars Cast
The cast of TFIOS at the film's New York premiere.

TFIOS, adapted from John Green’s bestselling novel (read all his books, if you haven’t already, seriously) is doing amazingly well not just in the US, but also in international markets. The film, which reportedly cost just $17 million to make, checked in at $26.1 million in domestic profits on Friday, and is projected to pass the $50 million mark by the end of Sunday, per Box Office Mojo. In international markets, TFIOS is expected to do even better, although the data is still unavailable at this time.

Fault In Our Stars: Shailene Woodley Tries To Rewrite The Female Lead

Shailene Woodley Ansel Elgort

In ‘Fault in our Stars’, Shailene Woodley doesn’t play the typical, manicured female lead. She’s not struggling to attract a guy’s attention or stabbing daemons in the heart with knife drawn from her knee-high boots. She plays Hazel Grace, a cancer patient at the age of 16.

And Woodley isn’t just the star of the film, she was a fan of the book before it was adapted, and even pleaded with author, John Green, to act upon his surname and give a film version his blessing. ‘Green-light it’, in case you didn’t pick up on that.

Shailene Woodley Hates Jennifer Lawrence Comparisons, But What Do They Have In Common?

Shailene Woodley Jennifer Lawrence

Shailene Woodley might not want to be called a feminist, but sometimes she says some really poignant things about women and equality. She also gets compared to Jennifer Lawrence a lot. That might seem unrelated, but according to Woodley, there’s a connection.

Shailene Woodley [l] and Jennifer Lawrence [r] - what do they really have in common?

"As women, we are constantly told that we need to compare ourselves to a girl in school, to our co-workers, to the images in a magazine," the 22-year-old beauty muses in the latest issue of New York magazine, which she covers with BFF Brie Larson. "How is the world going to advance if we're always comparing ourselves to others? I admire Jennifer Lawrence, but she's everyone's favorite person to compare me to."

Shailene Woodley is the star of the sci-fi film series 'Divergent,' and Jennifer Lawrence is the protagonist in the 'Huger Games' franchise, but this doesn't mean they are alike.

Even though these two movies mirror each other in may ways, Woodley does not want to constantly be compared with the 23 year-old Oscar winner.

And 'The Descendants' actress has a good explanation as to why.

Divergent Review

Good

Teens tackle yet another dystopian future in this well-made but derivative franchise-launcher. Filmmaker Neil Burger is more interested in whizzy visuals and a thorny plot to pay much attention to the characters or larger underlying themes, which leaves the film feeling eerily superficial. So while the film is relatively entertaining, it ultimately feels rather pointless.

The story's set after a war has reduced Chicago to a walled-in enclave of people divided into five stabilising factions: charitable Abnegation, peaceful Amity, honest Candor, defending Dauntless and brainy Erudite. Tris (Shailene Woodley) was born to parents (Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn) who are leaders in Abnegation, but when time comes for her to select her own path she discovers that she's Divergent, a cross-faction state that threatens those in power. So she chooses to join Dauntless, entering intense physical training under the tutelage of sexy hunk Four (Theo James) and harsh hunk Eric (Jai Courtney). then Dauntless' soldiers get caught up in a power struggle as Erudite leader Jeanine (Kate Winslet) plots to take governmental responsibilities from Abnegation.

All of this scene-setting takes about half of the film's running time, and it's frankly not very exciting. Burger makes sure it looks fantastic, with seamless visual effects, impressive stunt work and flashy action sequences, but the character drama takes longer to kick off. And there's also the problem that it essentially feels like a cross between The Hunger Games and Harry Potter as an unusually gifted teen takes on a controlling society.

Does 'Divergent' Actor Theo James Want To Be An American?

Theo James Shailene Woodley

It sounds like 29 year old British actor Theo James is keen to switch nationalities! The Divergent star was born and raised in Oxfordshire in the South East of England, afterwards attending university in Nottingham and training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

theo james divergent premiere English actor Theo James seems to be a huge fan of the United States

Before James was walking down the red carpet with Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet, he starred as Jed Harper in British supernatural television series Bedlam, as well as smug tour rep James in The Inbetweeners Movie (we'd take Simon any day!). James’ first major role across the pond was in the 2012 action horror film Underworld: Awakening, in which he appeared as David, a vampire ally of Kate Beckinsale’s character, Selene. Underworld: Awakening was filmed in Vancouver but clearly gave James a taste for what life was like outside of the UK.

The movie adaptation of Divergent, the young adult novel by Veronica Roth, has recorded a massive opening at the box-office despite middling reviews. The Irony Of 'Divergent': Why Are The Critics Not Impressed?

Shailene Woodley Theo James

There’s been a whole lot of hype surrounding Shailene Woodley and Theo James’ new movie Divergent, although sadly critics haven’t responded as well as had been expected. It seems like every other film that comes out at the moment is based on the hottest young-adult novels, each with a cult following that no one over the age of 19 knew existed until it becomes impossible to avoid movie’s promotion. Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games all surfaced in succession, each of them individually impacting a generation. In a time with so many great movies aimed at young adults to be successful you really have to stand apart from the crowd.

shailene woodley divergent premiere Critics were impressed with Shailene Woodley, but not with the Divergent plot

It seems that Divergent just doesn’t manage this. Jocelyn Noveck from CTV News puts her finger on it, “‘Divergent’ doesn’t diverge enough from the pack.” To rival The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen you’re going to have to pull something quite extraordinary out of the bag, and it seems that Divergent, ironically, is too much of the same old to make any kind of new impact. Noveck may feel that the movie fails to deliver plot-wise, but she praises the leading lady, “emerging young star Shailene Woodley delivers a crucial dose of humility, sensitivity and intelligence in this showcase role”. Theo James doesn’t go unnoticed, although it’s as Woodley’s “absurdly good-looking co-star” that he’s noted.

Shailene Woodley Strives To Be Genuine On Her Rise To Fame

Shailene Woodley Theo James

Divergent is out in theaters today and, after a thorough bashing, the film’s fate is now in the hands of moviegoers. Thanks to the book series’ devoted fan base, it’s likely that Divergent will top this weekend’s box office, or at least come near it. And it’s not just because of the success of the books. If there’s one thing the critics all seem to like (and it is really only one thing) it’s Shailene Woodley as Tris Prior and Theo James as the love interest, Four.

Shailene Woodley, Divergent
Woodley isn't really close to home in post-apocalyptic Chicago, but she makes it work.

While doing the press rounds for Divergent, Woodley recently talked about her newfound stardom to NPR. Starring in two book-to-movie adaptations this year, Woodley has plenty of experience with the genre – in fact, she finds it easier to work with.

Shailene Woodley Is Not A Twilight Fan, Thinks It "Sends Girls A Bad Message"

Shailene Woodley Kristen Stewart

Like a number of her fellow next gen Hollywood actresses, The Descendants star Shailene Woodley is conscious of the messages she sends to young people and young women in particular. Woodley is on the verge of superstardom, with teen novel adaptations Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars both due later this year. And since she’s all about empowerment for young women, you can bet that she has an opinion on other members of the genre.

Shailene Woodley, Independent Spirit Awards
Woodley thinks that movies should send a strong message of empowerment.

Speaking for TIME, Woodley took issue with one infamous piece of teen fiction in particular – Stephanie Meyer’s infamous Twilight books. Bella isn’t exactly known as the most looked-up to female protagonist and Woodley explains why: “Twilight, I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. [The protagonist Bella] falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”

Summit Announce Robert Schwentke As New Director For "Insurgent"

Robert Schwentke Shailene Woodley Theo James

The sequel to 2013’s token teen dystopian fic Divergent has just ended up with a new director - Robert Schwentke. Summit made the announcement on Tuesday, via the LA Times. It’s not unusual for a film franchise to switch directors between installments, sometimes more than once. What’s strange is when a director leaves the project even before the first film is released, as is the case with this adaptation of Veronica Roth’s young adult series.

Divergent Still
Ahead of the release of Divergent, Summit has announced a new director for the sequel.

The first film was directed by Neil Burger (Limitless, The Lucky Ones). His replacement Schwentke has some experience with the fantasy genre, having worked on The Time Traveler’s Wife and 2013’s R.I.P.D. He is also the director behind the well-received action/comedy Red. All in all, it sounds like Insurgent is in good hands.
