Sheridan Smith To Miss Up To A Month Of 'Funny Girl' Performances Because Of Stress

Sheridan Smith

The producers of West End musical ‘Funny Girl’ have announced that its star, Sheridan Smith, is to miss up to a month of performances due to stress and exhaustion.

The announcement comes after the 34 year old actress missed three consecutive performances of the production this week in the wake of the TV BAFTAs on Sunday night (May 8th), at which many speculated that she was displeased at losing out on the best actress award for her part in ‘The C Word’ – a topic close to her heart, since her brother passed away from the disease 15 years ago and her father was recently diagnosed with it.

Sheridan Smith has hit back at her critics on social media after she was ridiculed for missing a West End performance last night following the TV BAFTAs at the weekend.

News of the cancellation of her performance in ‘Funny Girl’ on Monday night (May 10th), just a few hours after she was seen after the ceremony drinking with a number of fellow stars. Sheridan Smith "Beguiling," David Walliams "Smarmy" In 'Midsummer Night's Dream'

Sheridan Smith David Walliams

Michael Grandage's updated take on William Shakespeare's centuries old comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream, has finally premiered at London's Noel Coward theatre. Set in the 60s, the psychedelic and confusing aspects of the play work well with the bright costumes, joint smoking and dress up games; the fairies are reimagined as a group of stoner, free-loving hippies with actress Sheridan Smith as Titania at the helm.

Hilarity And Life Lessons In The Ladies' Room Are The Main Themes Of 'Powder Room' [Trailer]

Sheridan Smith Kate Nash

Powder Room is a neon-lit, booze-soaked revelation into what goes on in the lives of women when no one is looking in a story set, as you may have guessed, mostly in a nightclub restroom. Or so the trailer would have us believe, at least. The film, based on the appropriately titled play When Women Wee, by Rachel Hirons, takes place within a single club in the space of one night.

Watch the Powder Room trailer

It tells the story of bored with life Sam, who spends days working and her nights, much like the current one – out at one questionable venue or another with a gaggle of shot-downing friends. A revelation comes to her on this particular night, when she has a chance encounter with old friend Michelle, who is now engaged and leads a dream life, full of glitz and glamour in Paris. Unlike Sam, Michelle is thoroughly underwhelmed by the particular club and makes her friend question her own judgement and standards.

Sam is living an entirely uninteresting life full of hardships and love life troubles. However, during one night out to what she reckons is a 'posh' nightclub, she is forced to reassess her life and think about who she really wants to be as she is reunited with her glamorous old friend Michelle, who is now engaged and leads a glitzy lifestyle in Paris with her equally trendy friend Jess. To her, the club is a distinctly cheap and tacky and Sam becomes so consumed with jealousy that she finds herself carving out a whole new identity that she is forced to keep up the rest of the night. But with friends like Chanel, Saskie and Paige who spend the evening downing shots and shamelessly seducing men, it becomes a harder feat than she realised.

Harry Hill And Julie Walters Race Scooters For 'The Harry Hill Movie' [Pictures]

Harry Hill Julie Walters Jim Broadbent Matt Lucas Sheridan Smith

Forget The Fast & The Furious! This week, comedian Harry Hill and British movie legend Julie Walters took to their scooters and powered through a quiet London suburb to film scenes from Hill's new movie Harry Hill The Movie. In a pretty hilarious looking scene, the comedian drives a yellow mobility scooter in typically slapstick fashion, falling off it at one point as Walters - who plays his grandmother - cackles away.

Iconic actress Walters was almost unrecognizable in a white frizzy wig, dark sunglasses and purple jacket while Hill was dressed as, well, Harry Hill. The comedian opted for his signature suit with big collared shirt and creeper shoes. The movie follows Harry and his grandmother as they attempt to get his pet hamster from London to a vet in Blackpool before the clock winds down. It's seems a pretty silly premise, though Harry has assembled quite for the cast for the movie, including revered actor Jim Broadbent, comedian Matt Lucas and recent Olivier award winner Sheridan Smith.

Directed by Steve Bendelack and co-written by Harry, Jon Forster and James Lamont, the movie is due to hit cinemas later in the year.

Olivia Coleman, A Nation's Sweetheart In The Making Following BAFTA Success?

BAFTA Sheridan Smith

The TV-leg of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards was held last night (May 12), offering thrills, spill, tears and laughs as always, as well as indicating who the United Kingdom's next national treasure in waiting might very well be. Peep Show actress Olivia Coleman picked up two awards on the night, finally earning plaudits on the back of decades spent working on TV.

The actress, who won two BAFTA awards for Best Supporting Actress (Mo's Story) and Best Female Comedy Performance (Twenty Twelve), was clearly overwhelmed with her first win, and by the time her name was called out for a second time she could barely keep things together - but managed to get through without breaking down, a quality that will no doubt endear her to the British public all the more. This morning, whilst speaking to ITV's Daybreak, the actress explained her disbelief and how the wins compare with having children and getting married. She said, "I haven't come up with a good answer yet, it feels amazing, feels amazing. So I've lost the ability to be eloquent!"

Quartet Is A 'Labrador' Of A Film: Average Reviews For Dustin Hoffman's Directorial Debut

Dustin Hoffman Maggie Smith Sheridan Smith Michael Gambon Billy Connolly

Very little of the criticism levied at Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut, Quartet, are serious. Largely because it's not a particularly serious film. The whole thing is lighthearted fun, behaving like a bit of a playground for the above-middle-age cast and director, all of whom who have enjoyed successful careers and don't necessarily need to push themselves in anything dark and mysterious.

Quartet is the story of a quartet of ageing musicians, living in a home together. In their younger days they had performed together, and they would like to again. Starring Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, Michael Gambon, Tom Courtenay and Sheridan Smith as support. Reviews have been fairly average so far.

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw gave it a desultory 2/5 stars saying that it "is stale, lifeless and often weirdly humourless," but praising Sheridan Smith, who he says "actually steals the film, just a little, with a quietly affecting final speech."

Quartet Review

Very Good

For his directing debut, Dustin Hoffman takes no chances, filling the screen with gifted actors who are working from an intelligent script. So even if it's essentially a rather flimsy little drama that never really stretches the talented cast, there's plenty to like along the way. And Hoffman makes sure that we enjoy ourselves, inserting some sparky humour and a bit of romantic comedy to keep us smiling.

It takes place in a stately home for retired British musicians, which is planning its annual fundraising gala. Then iconic soprano Joan (Smith) arrives, and the gala's diva-like director (Gambon) decides to reunite the quartet known for a famed performance of Verdi's Rigoletto. The other three have long been residents: womanising Wilf (Connolly) and ditzy Cissy (Collins) are up for it, but Reggie (Courtenay) has never recovered after his marriage to Jean failed decades ago. Of course, everyone connives to get Jean and Reggie to talk to each other, but getting Jean to come out of retirement to sing again is an even more daunting task.

Aside from the central theme of second chances, there isn't much to this film beyond watching a group of superb veteran actors have a lot of fun on screen together. As the swishy ringleader, Gambon camps it up hilariously, even as everyone else ignores him. Connolly gleefully chomps on Wilf's innuendo-filled dialogue, and Collins radiates warmth. While Sheridan Smith surprises with a strong turn as the doctor in residence. This leaves Smith and Courtenay with the script's only meaty scenes, and they make finding the raw honesty in these wounded people look easy.

Tower Block Review

Good

Gritty and claustrophobic, this British horror-thriller holds our interest with well-played characters rather than the wobbly plotting. It's a clever idea for low-budget suspense, because it essentially has just one set. And the premise is unnerving even if we instantly realise its implausibility. Still, once everything is set in motion, the story has no where to go, trapped like the characters themselves on the top floor of a condemned London apartment building.

Aside from the residents of the top floor of this block, everyone else has already been relocated. And after a violent murder in the corridor, these people are ready to get out too. Then one morning sniper fire starts picking them off one by one through the windows. Their phones and internet are down, every way out is blocked, and they have to work out a plan of action. Intriguingly, it's a young woman, Becky (Smith), who rises as the group's leader, tenaciously refusing to give up. Other residents include a local thug (O'Connell), a depressed alcoholic (Tovey), a couple of pensioners (Brown and Baker), a tense mum (Graham) and her teen son (McEntire), and two drug dealers (Elouhabi and Robinson).

As we begin to understand what's happening, there are some massive lapses in logic that continually niggle. The sniper is shooting from one side of the building, so presumably the flats on the other side are safe and undisturbed, and yet everyone remains huddled in the hallway. The building's front door is blocked, but they ignore the fire exit. And how exactly do you block a mobile phone signal at the top of a tall tower in a massive city? Fortunately, the actors make us believe that they aren't worried by these gaping plot holes. Smith is especially good as the feisty Becky, a refreshingly complex female hero who doesn't have to be rescued by the boys. O'Connell adds a few layers to his annoying character, and Tovey is as likeable as ever.

Hysteria Review

Good

There's probably a fascinating, complex story behind the invention of the vibrator in 19th century London, but this silly farce isn't it. Instead, this is a comical romp that just happens to be set against the birth of the most popular sex toy in history. It's nicely assembled, with a strong cast, but the tone is so goofy that it never breaks the surface.

It's the late 1880s when young doctor Mortimer (Dancy) takes a job in London with Dalrymple (Pryce), who specialises in treating hysteria, considered a serious medical condition at the time, even though it seems to only afflict women whose husbands are neglecting them socially and sexually. As Mortimer courts Dalrymple's placid younger daughter (Jones), lining himself to take over the practice one day, it's the feisty older daughter (Gyllenhaal) who continually challenges his worldview. And as he treats his patients, Mortimer works with his friend Edmund (Everett) to create a mechanical vibrating device that has an immediate effect on his patients.

Everything in this story is played broadly, as if it's frightfully hilarious to talk about sex in such a straightforward way. But this prudish approach only trivialises everything about the story, from the premise to the characters themselves. And it doesn't help that the script never gives any of these people more than one or two key personality traits. The actors do what they can with them, adding moments of effective drama and comedy while hinting at the serious themes underneath the story. But it's so silly that we never really care about anything that happens.
