The actress made a surprise return to the show on Friday night (July 8).
Sheridan Smith made her return to West End show Funny Girl last night after nearly two months away. Smith, who stars in the musical as Fanny Brice, was signed off from the show in May, after suffering from stress and exhaustion.
Sheridan Smith has returned to Funny Girl.
In a statement on the show’s official Twitter account producers said: “We are delighted to welcome Sheridan Smith back to Funny Girl this evening (Friday 8th July). It is currently planned that Sheridan will play the role of Fanny Brice on Saturday 9 July at the evening performance, but not at the matinee.”

Smith will also perform from Monday 11 to Saturday 16 July (excluding Wednesday 13 July matinee and Thursday 14 July evening performances). The role will be taken over by Natasha J Barnes, who had be filling in for Smith for the past two months, on the Saturday 9 July matinee, Wednesday 13 July matinee and on Thursday14 July in the evening.
The next week, beginning on July 18, Smith will appear from Tuesday to Saturday, with Barnes taking the lead on Monday. The show is due to run at London’s Savoy Theatre until 8 October, but there’s also been talk of it moving to Broadway.

Smith was first signed off from the show on May 12. At the time producers released a statement saying. “The entire team at Funny Girl is thinking of Sheridan, and know she is getting the rest and support she needs during this very difficult and stressful time. We will all miss her enormously and send our love and best wishes – and we are looking forward to her return to the show in due course.”
