The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman Review

Very Good

Shia LaBeouf is well-cast in this freewheeling combination of comedy, romance and action. He plays a scruffy guy with no plans and nothing to lose, lost in a strange culture while falling in love with the wrong woman. It's not a particularly original premise, and much of what happens feels wildly improbable, but the characters and situations are so entertaining that we can't help but hold on for the ride.

It opens in Chicago, where Charlie (LaBeouf) watches helplessly as his mother (Melissa Leo) dies in hospital, asking her what he should do next. Then there she is appearing to him, telling him to visit Bucharest. "That's weirdly specific," he replies, but he follows her advice, and on the flight over has another encounter with a dead person. This one asks him to look up his daughter Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood) and give her a message. Of course, Charlie is instantly smitten, but tries to ignore the fact that Gabi's psychopathic husband Nigel (Mads Mikkelsen) looks easily capable of murder. As does the mobster club owner Darko (Til Schweiger) Charlie has a run in with while out on the town with his youth hostel roommates, two chucklehead Brits (Rupert Grint and James Buckley).

As the title suggests, Charlie feels like death is inevitable for him, especially now that he seems to have caught whatever that kid from The Sixth Sense had. LaBeouf gives Charlie just the right mix of hapless loser and quick-thinking resourcefulness, and his chemistry with Wood is tetchy and fun to watch. Meanwhile, the scene-stealing supporting stars Mikkelsen, Schweiger, Grint and Buckley add a terrific mixture of comedy silliness and dark peril. This seems to be director Fredrik Bond's main goal here: to blend genres from grim drama to sweet romance to goofy slapstick to Taken-style action violence.

Brad Pitt And Co Head Back To WWII With 'Fury'

Brad Pitt David Ayer Shia LaBeouf Logan Lerman Michael Pena Jon Bernthal Angelina Jolie

Now storming through cinemas worldwide after claiming the US box office crown last weekend, the World War II tank-crew thriller 'Fury' is an old-school war movie that attempts to update the genre with a more internalised approach to its characters.

Brad Pitt has deep respect for the war veterans who inspired 'Fury'

"It's about a family and their love for each other," says writer-director David Ayer of the five-man crew played by Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Pena and Jon Bernthal. "We wanted to explore the moral and psychological hazards of war, and how they affect this family of brothers."

Fury Review

Good

From Training Day to this year's Sabotage, filmmaker David Ayer writes and directs movies about the cathartic power of releasing your inner warrior. And this World War II action thriller is more of the same, with a "war is hell" message stirred in for good measure. The problem is that there's nothing particularly new here. It's a beautifully shot and edited film, with terrific performances and a remarkable sense of scale, but there have been so many movies made about this conflict that it's difficult to find something original to connect with.

It's near the end of the war, April 1945, as Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) leads the crew of a tank named Fury: Bible (Shia LaBeouf) is a true believer, Gordo (Michael Pena) is a relaxed joker, and Coon-Ass (Jon Bernthal) is a hot-headed thug. Having just lost their driver, they're joined by rookie Norman (Logan Lerman), who doesn't yet have a wartime nickname because he never thought he'd end up driving a tank. Together, they head further into Germany, not as liberators but as invaders and occupiers, working with other tank crews to take a strategic town before heading further into the hot zone, where a series of particularly brutal Nazi assaults ensue.

The point of the film seems to be that war erodes a person's humanity over time, and the sharpest aspect is the way each character emerges at some point on the continuum. Obviously, Norman is the naive newbie who still has a strong conscience, while at the other extreme Coon-Ass is virtually a monster. Wardaddy is somewhere in between, a tough guy who still has a sense of perspective, such as when he reasons that Norman should be allowed to have some private time with a young German girl (Alicia von Rittberg) simply because they're "young and alive". All of the actors are excellent, adding telling details to their characters that deepen every scene. And the camaraderie between the five-man crew is remarkably authentic, as is their ease inside the cramped quarters of the tank, which makes submarine movies look spacious by comparison.

Brad Pitt was joined by his 'Fury' co-stars at a Paris photocall held at Les Invalides. He posed on the red carpet in front of an army tank with actors Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Bernthal and Michael Pena, as well as director David Ayer. During the photo session, Shia and Jon appeared to share a little playful banter, with Shia exclaiming, 'What's the deal, man?!' as they are joined by General Christian Baptiste and General Herve Charpentie.

Shia LaBeouf Finally Breaks Silence On Recent Bizarre Behaviour

Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf has made headlines this past year for an array of bizarre incidents, which includes wearing a paper bag over his head with the words "I AM NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE" written across it at the premiere of 'Nymphomaniac' in February, and most recently drunkenly interrupting a performance of Broadway's 'Cabarat.'

Shia LaBeouf
LaBeouf admitted he was going through an "existential crisis"

However, while the 28 year-old star stopped by Ellen DeGeneres' talk show Friday (Oct 10th), he finally addressed his strange behaviour and admitted he may have crossed the line on a few occasions.

The other members, 'Wardaddy' (Brad Pitt), 'Bible' (Shia LaBeouf), 'Gordo' (Michael Pena) and 'Coon-Ass' (Jon Bernthal) have been together for the entirety off the war so far, and desperately hope that the new recruit is ready to do his job. Shia LaBeouf Won't Be Going To Prison

Shia LaBeouf Alan Cumming

Transformers star Shia LaBeouf has pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct filed earlier this year when he interrupted a theatre performance and then resisted removal from the venue. Under the terms of the plea he will avoid jail time or probation, but will have to attend all court appointments and complete a three month treatment programme.

According to the BBC, LaBeouf was arrested after "smoking, shouting at actors and using abusive language" whilst attempts were made to remove him from the theatre audience. The incident occurred during a performance of hit musical Cabaret in New York, starring Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming. However Scott Gorenstein, the rep for Liza Minnelli, made light of the siutation when he sent a DVD of the 1972 film adaptation of the musical to LaBeouf, telling Us Weekly "I figured he may want to find out how it ends."

In The Wake Of His Recent Arrest, Has Shia LaBeouf Checked Into Rehab?

Shia LaBeouf

The first step is admitting you have a problem and Shia LaBeouf seems to have done just that, having checked himself into rehab. On Monday, the actor entered a rehab facility in LA, after being spotted carrying an Alcoholics Anonymous book. According to RadarOnline, the book is known as The Big Book, it is the central text of the program and considered essential reading for anyone trying to get and remain sober.

It seems like having a DUI is sort of a celebrity rite of passage, all of them seem to have one! King of all DUI arrests, Mel Gibson, was arrested in 2006 for driving nearly twice the speed limit after a night of hard partying. In case he wasn’t in enough trouble, Mel then allegedly began to shout anti-semitic remarks. Most celebrities manage to bounce back quickly after their DUIs, but Mel’s reputation has never recovered.

The Mythological Production Of Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'

Shia LaBeouf Lars Von Trier Jamie Bell Charlotte Gainsbourg Stacy Martin Christian Slater

Lars Von Trier’s latest film Nymphomaniac has been getting everyone hot under the collar since before any actual filming even began. Written and directed by the controversial von Trier, who is renowned for his avant-garde approach to filmmaking, the film stars Stellan Skarsgard, Stacy Martin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LeBeouf, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman and Willem Dafoe...how’s that for a star-studded cast?

shia labeouf nymphomaniac Shia LaBeouf plays one of Joe's lovers in Nymphomaniac

There may be loads of mainstream actors on board, but the concept behind Nymphomaniac is anything but commercial. Charting the sexual history of Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, the plot sees her recount her erotic experiences to Seligman, a bachelor who took her in after finding her having been beaten up in an alley. Divided into two separate films, or “volumes”, and eight chapters, the first volume of Nymphomaniac tells the story of Joe when she was young (played by Stacy Martin) while volume two is concerned with the older Joe.

Lars Von Trier Shia LaBeouf

Lar Von Trier’s controversial film (that’s almost become a mandatory sentence hasn’t it?) ‘Nymphomaniac Vol 1’ hits America tonight (March 21) on a limited basis. But considering the movie has been available on-demand since March 7 in the U.S. through distributor Magnolia Pictures, will anyone go and see it at the cinema?

Lars Von TrierLars Von Trier could have done with this kind of thing at Cannes

We’re talking about those moments you watch a sex scene with your parents. It’s awkward enough at home let alone in the cinema, and while – of course – no kids will be attending the multiplex to check out the steamy number, watching explicit sex scenes in public isn’t the most comfortable way to spend a Friday evening. Especially when the option to watch it at home is very much available.

Nymphomaniac: Volume II Trailer

Joe is a fiercely determined 50-year-old woman whose sexual drive has taken over her entire life. Her story of how she ended up injured in an alleyway and subsequently being nursed back to health by the curious Seligman deepens and darkens in this half of the story, as she relays tales of how her sexuality has caused so much damage. In a bid to somehow recover from her nymphomania, she attends a therapy group, but she also can't resist meeting a therapist of a different kind as she finds new and more dangerous ways to challenge herself and her sexuality. Her pleasure through pain has led her to a potential job with a group of criminals who are looking for somebody to inflict pain on their victims. But with such instable people around her, just how close is she to landing in some serious trouble?

Nymphomaniac: Volume 1 Trailer

Joe has always known she's been completely obsessed with sex ever since she was a young girl. Her excessive desires would see her meet man after man after man, eventually with little ability to remember who was who. Her fantasies were extreme; she wanted to rebel against the idea of love by allowing herself to be used by men as if she were an object. When she finds herself lying in an alleyway in her fifties having been badly beaten by an as yet unknown perpetrator, she is rescued by a charming older man named Seligman who takes her to his home and offers her a pick-me-up and a bed for the night. It's there she uncovers her entire sexual history, though with none of the joy it brought her as a young woman. Instead, she is despondent and filled with a heart-breaking self-hatred as Seligman tries to offer some wise words of comfort.

100% Done - Alec Baldwin Is Retiring From Public Life. For Good.

Alec Baldwin Shia LaBeouf

Alec Baldwin seems to have ended his love affair with New York City. Or would that be MSNBC? Or public life in general? Regardless, Baldwin seems to be fed up with all of it, if his candid essay, published on Vulture, is anything to go by. In the essay, Baldwin recounts all the ways in which 2013 was “pretty awful”, starting with the accusations of homophobia that came his way early in the year.

Alec Baldwin
Baldwin seemed to be on a collision course for most of 2013.

Baldwin has a bit of ire reserved for almost everyone – MSNBC, Rachel Maddow, Shia LaBeouf – no one is safe from his wrath. He goes on to explain how his clashing with LaBeouf sabotaged his return to theater and how later in the year, his talk show was relegated to MSNBC, even though Baldwin wanted to do in on NBC instead. It’s a long read. Even despite the inevitable inaccuracies, it’s still interesting to read Baldwin’s point of view on the whole debacle – and he certainly isn’t shy about sharing it.

Jamie Bell Met A Naked Lars Von Trier, Smacked Gainsbourg Without A Hello. Nymphomaniac Anyone?

Jamie Bell Lars Von Trier Charlotte Gainsbourg Shia LaBeouf

If Jamie Bell’s account is anything to go by, working with Lars Von Trier is a truly unforgettable experience. The young British actor has recounted the Danish director’s strange directing techniques with The Guardian in an interview, and they involve meeting him, totally naked (Von Trier, not Bell) and smacking Charlotte Gainsbourg with pleasantries skipped.

NymphomaniacJamie Bell, pictured far right, plays 'K' in Nymphomaniac.

"I'd just got to Copenhagen to begin shooting. Thomas was showing me around: 'We built this set here, this is where the production design room is.' Then we had to walk past this outdoor pool and there was Lars with a towel in his hand,” explained bell. “He dropped the towel, he shook my hand – he was stark bollock-naked – and he said, 'Do you want to come for a swim?' And I said, 'I'm all right man, I just got here, I've still got my suitcase, so I'll wait.'"

Go And See 'Nymphomaniac' This Weekend, Because It's Really Good

Charlotte Gainsbourg Lars Von Trier Shia LaBeouf

This weekend sees the limited release of Lars Von Trier’s latest mindbender: Nymphomaniac. Fans of the enigmatic Danish director will relish the chance to see both volumes back to back with this one-day (Saturday Feb 22) release, but if you need convincing to see 4.5 hours of Lars then read on.

Charlotte GainsbourgGainsbourg gets up to some raunchy stuff in Nymphomaniac

The film, like many of Von Trier’s, sees Charlotte Gainsbourg take the lead role. She’s a troubled nymphomaniac who provides the film’s plot by recounting her life after Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) finds her beaten in an alley.

It’s split in to two parts – Volume I and II – and both parts are playing tomorrow in London as a double feature. The reviews, however, seem to focus on individual volumes, with the first achieving 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the second, 83%.

“A provocative, engrossing, often hilarious, frequently tough picture. Not for all sensibilities but it's among von Trier's more playful, purely entertaining films, with insight and humour in even the horrors,” wrote Empire’s Kim Newman in his review.

“By the end of four hours the concept "picaresque" has been serially used and abused, much like the film's heroine. There's a vision here, even so, that shapes the film's prolix, promiscuous ends,” said Nigel Andrews in The Financial Times.

“For the most part Nymphomaniac is compelling and achieves exactly what von Trier set out to do: a multi-faceted exploration of sexuality, in all its bizarre, twisted glory,” writes James Mottram for The List.

And here, at Contact Music, Rich Cline awarded Nymphomaniac (both volumes as one film) 4/5, writing: “For the most part Nymphomaniac is compelling and achieves exactly what von Trier set out to do: a multi-faceted exploration of sexuality, in all its bizarre, twisted glory.”

If one thing’s for sure, it’s that Lars Von Trier will take you out of your comfort zone with Nymphomaniac, and it’s something you should experience in its enterity. So what are you waiting for, pick up the phone and start dialing! Oh wait, that’s a different film.

Nymphomaniac Review

Excellent

At four hours long, this drama is as confrontational as anything we've seen by Lars von Trier (Melancholia), but it's also perhaps his most humane and hopeful film yet. This is a challenging, complex exploration of human sexuality, but it's told with a surprisingly light touch, allowing humour and warmth to seep in around the edges. So even if it's darkly haunting and occasionally shocking, violent or sexually explicit, it's so recognisably honest that we can't help but be moved.

This is the story of Joe (played as a teen by Martin and as an adult by Gainsbourg), who is found near death in an alleyway and nursed back to health by the kindly Seligman (Skarsgard). While she recovers from her injuries, she tells him about her life, which has been defined by sex since she was 2 years old. She loses her virginity as a teen to the greasy biker Jerome (LaBeouf), who will re-enter her life two more times over the following decades. Through the years she struggles to understand love, which she sees as lust plus jealousy. Then when she suspects that love might be the secret ingredient for good sex, her subsequent experiences take her down an unexpected road.

Flashbacks to Joe's life are sequential, so as she narrates her story we experience it along with her. This includes her riotous teen years preying on men as a game, protesting with her friends against a love-fixated society. Getting sex is easy, but making sense of it is something else. She tries being randomly cruel to men, and having a master (Bell) physically abuse her. She experiences love and motherhood, and eventually finds a career as an enforcer for a loan shark (Dafoe). Along the way, Martin and Gainsbourg deliver unflinching performances that let us see Joe's soul. And Skarsgard takes our breath away in an unusually introspective, wrenching role.

Amanda Bynes And The Curse Of The Child Star

Amanda Bynes Britney Spears Shia LaBeouf

The Amanda Bynes saga was funny at first. When she started dressing like Nicki Minaj, pierced her cheeks and began tweeting strange messages to rapper, Drake, it all just seemed like harmless Miley Cyrus attention seeking. But then things took a turn for the worst when Amanda’s behaviour became increasingly erratic, culminating in her attempting to start up a fire in a neighbour’s driveway before accidentally covering her puppy in gasoline.

Amanda Bynes Troubled Star Amanda began behaving strangely, emerging from court wearing a knotted blonde wig

The actress’ problems didn’t seem to really start until 2012 when she received a DUI and later that year she was charged for two more alleged hit and run incidents. By 2013 she had been arrested for possession of drugs and her hard partying seemed to be a symptom of something a little more sinister. When things finally came to a head with the fire incident, it was clear that Amanda wasn’t high on drugs or ‘acting out’, this was somebody with mental health issues.

While Eric Cantona is no stranger to being banned, his latest is not really his fault. The advert in which he stars – one for Kronenbourg 1664 – has been pulled for misleading customers.

Eric CantonaEric Cantona's parody ad is not cool

The misleading part comes from the assertion within the advert that the beer is brewed in a particular French town, Alsace. But it’s not: it’s brewed in the rainy British city of Manchester. Which isn’t quite as glamorous. The ad sees Cantona parody the treatment footballers get, from fan adulation to superstar treatment in various establishments.
