Everyone’s been talking about that Shia LaBeouf acid trip rumour, so what exactly DID LaBeouf get up to when he was filming The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman? Well, Shia left no stone unturned when it came to researching his character, Charlie Countryman. In this case, that extended to taking acid, so that he could experience the psychedelic drug taken by the character. He was quick to assure the press at the Sundance Festival, though, that he did not drop any acid on set, but left his research purely for down time, Wenn reports.

As with any other research he’d do for the character, Shia discussed his findings with his co-stars and even sent Evan Rachel Wood footage of him whilst he was high. “I remember sending Evan tapes. I remember trying to conjure this (drug-addicted character) and sending tapes and Evan being like, 'Yeah, that's good, but that's not, but this is, but that ain't (sic).' Not like she's the expert on set. I'm just saying you reach out to friends and you sort of gauge where you're at. So I was sending tapes around.”

Apparently, one acid trip wasn’t quite enough to get all of that research done and LaBeouf found himself getting high more than once, in order to nail the performance. He was careful not to let it spill onto the set though. “You don't show up wasted. You don't show up completely tripping on acid. But you're rooting for something (the feeling of being on drugs) and you're pushing yourself toward it. Everyone's got their own way.”
