Shia LaBeouf has reportedly been arrested and charged with assault and harassment at the site of his permanent protest against the new president Donald Trump this week, in circumstances that are not particularly clear.

The 30 year old actor, who has been in the headlines more frequently for his series of life-as-art projects than his actual movies in recent years, was handcuffed and led away by police on Wednesday evening (January 25th).

Reportedly, this happened a few hours after a 13-second video was released of LaBeouf shoving a man who addressed the camera with the words ‘Hitler did nothing wrong’, which was seen on the Twitter feed for #HeWillNotDivideUs, the name of LaBeouf’s permanent art installation in Queens, New York City.

TMZ reported that LaBeouf scratched the man and grabbed his scarf. Later that evening, another video fragment saw the actor being led away by the NYPD.

“Shia was attacked by a Nazi. Shia got arrested. Nazi got away,” the Twitter account later posted, echoed by another video in which fellow protesters who say: “Shia took a hit for us. There were all these Nazis here, he came out and tried to protect us.”

Police officials have been attending the site, outside the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, since Monday, the day after LaBeouf was reported to have shouted down a rival protestor by yelling “He Will Not Divide Us” right into his face.

The installation, conceived by LaBeouf and his creative partners Nastja Säde Rönkkö and Luke Turner, invites passers-by to stand in front of a wall-mounted camera and say ‘He Will Not Divide Us’ into it. It has been running since the inauguration on January 20th, and aims to run for the next four years, or for however long Trump actually spends in office.

The New York Police Department said subsequently that LaBeouf must attend a court hearing scheduled for April 7th.
