The Lost City Of Z Review

Good

Based on a true story, it's the historical aspect of these events that holds the attention, even though the filmmakers kind of let the drama slip through their fingers. It's an impressively designed film, with vivid characters and some rather amazing situations. But the script's structure is too fragmented to build the story's momentum.

It opens in 1906 London, where Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam) is assigned to accompany a geographical expedition to the jungles on the border of Bolivia and Brazil. While there accompanied by the intrepid Costin (Robert Pattinson), he discovers signs of a massive ancient city, which he names Z, the ultimate human achievement. Back in England, he reacquaints himself with his fiercely independent wife Nina (Sienna Miller) and plans a return trip with Costin and wealthy benefactor Murray (Angus Macfadyen) to find this lost pre-European civilisation. But Murray causes so many problems that they return empty-handed. The outbreak of the Great War delays Percy from going back to South America, so he heads off to the front to fight. Later, he organises a final expedition to find Z, accompanied by his now-adult son Jack (Tom Holland).

The screenplay has simplified Percy's attempts to find Z (he actually travelled to Brazil around 10 times). But the three trips depicted here begin to feel oddly repetitive, broken up by scenes of impatient domesticity in Britain. All of these sequences are sharply well shot and played, but the overall impact is lessened by all of the travelling back and forth. And many of the long sequences back in Europe feel like asides to the main story of Percy's all-consuming obsession with finding this ancient city, which we now know exists. Hunnam is terrific in the role, with his cut-glass accent and stiff upper lip even in the face of impending doom. He's likeable and passionate, and his scenes with the superb Miller sparkle. Patterson and Macfadyen add some texture as loyal and obnoxious colleagues, respectively. And Holland's quiet charisma very nearly steals the show.

The Lost City Of Z Trailer and Clip Trailer

Colonel Percy Fawcett is an ambitious British explorer who, come 1925, plans to take a long trip into the Amazon rainforest to uncover an ancient lost civilisation that he names 'Z'. He expects to find ruins and treasure, possibly even remnants from the legendary El Dorado, but it seems an impossible task to get the backing of the respected scientists of the day who can't possibly conceive that a civilisation perhaps more advanced than our own could exist amongst the native tribes they perceive as savages. His wife seems to be the only one who supports his mission, as well as his son Jack and another friend who agree to accompany him on the voyage. Unfortunately, this will be the trio's last trip, as they are subsequently never seen in England again.

Good

Ben Affleck launched his directing career 10 years ago with his film of Dennis Lehane's novel Gone Baby Gone, and he now returns to the author to adapt this Prohibition-era gangster drama. It's a big, beefy story with colourful characters and a snaky, expansive plot. And it's beautifully assembled by a skilled cast and crew. Even so, the film never quite generates quite enough energy to engage properly with the audience.

In 1927 Boston, Joe (Affleck) is a war veteran who has turned to crime to survive. But problems arise when he launches a torrid affair with the moll (Sienna Miller) of the Irish mob boss (Robert Glenister). With his life in danger, he turns to the rival Italian mafioso (Remo Girone) for a job, and is sent to Tampa to run their rum-smuggling operation. Working with his pal Dion (Chris Messina), Joe makes a success of a string of speak-easy bars and finds love with a the sister (Zoe Saldana) of a Cuban gangster. Then as he plans to open a huge casino, his gentlemanly agreement with the local police chief (Chris Cooper) is threatened. And it doesn't help that the boss in Boston begins to meddle.

Everything is assembled with a sumptuous sense of style, from the cool cars to the epic suits and hats. The film looks gorgeous, shot with muted colours that echo the subdued emotions of people who never quite say what they think. Of course, this creates a big problem, because it leaves Affleck's Joe looking like a blank slate, intriguing to watch but impossible to sympathise with. Nothing feels properly developed, with romances that seem to exist for no real reason and business relationships that appear to be based on some sort of unexplained subterfuge. The most riveting element of the story is Joe's clash with the KKK, a powerfully bull-headed group that refuses to play by the usual mob rules.

Lost City Of Z - Teaser Trailer

In 1925, a British explorer named Colonel Percy Fawcett disappeared in the Amazon rainforest with his son Jack and one of Jack's friends. He was on the search for an ancient lost city he dubbed 'Z', rumoured to hold never before noted ruins and possibly the remains of El Dorado. He was also on the way to discover to another location in the Mato Grosso region of Brazil, which was talked of in an old manuscript he found at a library in Rio de Janeiro. However, whether or not his journey was completed remains unknown, because neither he not his companions returned from the expedition. To this day, his death remains a mystery. Many have claimed that he was killed by tribal natives in the region, others that they died after falling ill, and one story even claims he spent the rest of his days as the leader of a tribe of cannibals.

Weak

After a string of award-winning arthouse hits like Kill List and A Field in England, director Ben Wheatley and writer Amy Jump stumble with this adaptation of the 1970s J.G. Ballard novel. The satirical dystopian setting offers buckets of eye-popping visual style, plus outrageously twisted characters the A-list cast have a lot of fun sinking their teeth into. But while the themes are strong, the people on screen are so aggressively loathsome that it's not an easy movie to watch.

It's set in a brutal concrete tower within commuting distance of London, where new resident Robert (Tom Hiddleston) is learning his way around the building's modern, self-contained design. He especially enjoys flirting with his sexy upstairs neighbour Charlotte (Sienna Miller). But the building has a social structure that is creating some serious tension. Wealthy residents like the tower's architect Anthony (Jeremy Irons) live at the top, while economically struggling families like Helen and Richard (Elisabeth Moss and Luke Evans) are closer to the ground, with middle-class families in between. So when the lower floors lose their supply of water and electricity, they revolt against the upper classes, waging all-out war in the hallways.

The political commentary is astute and perhaps even more timely today than it was in 1975, when the novel was written and when the film is set. And each of the characters is full of energy and anger. So it's frustrating that the choppy editing style seems to lose track of people and plot-threads as it shifts around to various angles on the action. This makes all of the violence and sex feel oddly random and excessive, as things get increasingly nasty and each of the people loses the audience's sympathy. Hiddleston has terrific presence, but the film kind of abandons him along the way. While Irons is hamming it up shamelessly, Evans is inexplicably brutal and both Moss and Miller are little more than victims.

Sienna Miller, Sean Bean (and Alan Partridge) Amongst BAFTA Nominees

BAFTA Sienna Miller Imelda Staunton Peter Capaldi Sean Bean

Sienna Miller, Imelda Staunton, Peter Capaldi and Sarah Lancashire are among the nominees for the 2013 television BAFTAs. London based actress Miller - a star on both sides of the Atlantic - gets the nod for her role as Tipi Hedren in the BBC's Alfred Hitchcock drama The Girl, which scooped four nominations in total. Staunton received a best supporting actress nomination, also for The Girl, while Lancashire was rewarded for her performance in the romantic-drama Last Tango in Halifax.

Peter Capaldi is up for best actor for BBC Two's recently-axed 1950's drama The Hour, though also for his role as the foul-mouthed spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in political comedy The Thick Of It. The latter nomination - for best male performance in a comedy programme - will see Capaldi pitted against Steve Coogan's return as Alan Partridge in Welcome To The Place Of My Life, as well as Inbetweeners star Greg Davies.

Elsewhere in the acting categories, Sheridan Smith received her first BAFTA nomination for her portrayal as Mrs Biggs, in the true story of the wife of the Great Train Robber, Ronnie Biggs, and Rebecca Hall was nominated for Parade's End. Sean Bean is nominated for his performance as transvestite Tracie in Accused, the BBC drama series which follows people accused of crimes as they await the verdict. Bean's performance was clearly one of the stand-out turns of the year and he won best actor for the role at the Royal Television Society Awards in March.

Jude Law Spotted In France With Stunning New Girlfriend?

Jude Law Sadie Frost Sienna Miller

Rumours of Jude Law and his love life are rife after he was spotted arriving at an airport in France with a striking young woman.

The 'Cold Mountain' star has thrust his love life in front of media eyes yet again by showing up at Marseille airport with the stunning beaut who looked make-up free and was wearing a red leather jacket, wet look leggings and high heeled boots. The photos of the pair emerge only months after there was speculation that Law was dating a much younger PR executive named Charlie Hayes-Jones who has previously been linked to HRH Prince Harry.

The actor's former loves include Sadie Frost who he was married to for six years and with whom he had three children as well as the unforgettable Sienna Miller who he was engaged with for two years but split after he admitted to having an affair with the nanny. He also has a child with model Samantha Burke who he had only a very brief relationship with. He and Sienna were reunited after starring in different Broadway shows in 2009 but it was announced that they had ended their relationship yet again by 2011. If the pretty airport woman is his new girlfriend, she'll need to be a tough cookie to deal with his past romantic dramas.

Can Kylie Minogue Outdo Sienna Miller As Edie Sedgwick?

Kylie Minogue Sienna Miller Peter Serafinowicz Edie Sedgwick Andy Warhol Idris Elba

Kylie Minogue has landed a starring role in a Sky Arts TV comedy based on Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgwick. The Australian pop princess - who is dedicating more time to the acting side of her career - will appear in an edition of Playhouse Presents titled Hey Diddly Dee, with comic Peter Serafinowicz playing the enigmatic artist.

The drama follows a group of actors putting on a production about Warhol, with Minogue playing a Sedgwick-style character called Bibbi. "When the script was sent to me, I read it and knew instinctively I wanted to be part of this project. In Hey Diddly Dee, Marc [Warren, director] has created a beautiful and quirky story," said Kylie in a statement. Sedgwick was an artist student who joined Warhol at the infamous 'Factory' - the pop artist's studio and debauched hangout for a group of cool New York eccentrics, some of them drug addicts. She gained fame as a Warhol muse and successful fashion model, though died in 1971 at the age of 28. A coroner ruled her death as "undetermined/accident/suicide" though her death certificate stated the immediate cause was "probably acute barbiturate intoxication." She was played by British actress Sienna Miller in the 2006 movie Factory Girl, which received mixed reviews from critics, though most lauded the actress' individual performance. Film 4 said, "Sienna Miller guarantees herself a bit more than 15 minutes with a strong performance in an otherwise dazed and confused film." James Christopher of The Times said, "Miller is a genuine surprise as the damaged star. But the film leaves her very much as it finds her: a clueless naïve."

Minogue has appeared in a number of movies including Leos Carax's frankly bizarre Holy Motors, which was tipped to win the Palme d'Or in 2012, though eventually lost out to Amour. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw gave it 5 stars, saying, "A gorgeous furry teacup of a film." Hey Diddly Dee is due to screened on Sky Arts on March 14, which will be followed by a Playhouse Presents episode written and directed by Idris Elba, and another by artist Grayson Perry.

"It's A Tribute To Her Courage", Nude Portrait Of Pregnant Sienna Miller On Display

Sienna Miller has been praised by the artist Jonathan Yeo, for posing naked whilst she was pregnant.

The painting, which Yeo created just a few weeks before the actress gave birth to baby Marlowe will be shown at his exhibition in Berlin, entitled (I’ve Got You) Under My Skin, Marie Claire reports.

Writing about his subject matter, Yeo said “It is a tribute to her courage and self-confidence that she agreed to sit for this. I can think of many figures whose public currency in part revolves around their appearance who would prefer to hide themselves away for nine months.” In the exhibition catalogue, he also said “This portrait of Sienna was painted a few weeks before the birth of her baby Marlowe and is part of a series of pictures of her which I plan to exhibit next year.”

Sienna Miller Baby Bump Paintings Unveiled By Jonathan Yeo

Sienna Miller

Hailed by many as the most beautiful and most natural visage of a woman, the pregnant naked body has captured the imaginations of artists and photographers on a wide scale over the past few decades. Hirst's pregnant nude sculpture was unveiled in a sleepy seaside town earlier this year, and now celebrity portraitist Jonathan Yeo is set to exhibit a painting of a pregnant Sienna Miller in Berlin, as a part of his (I've Got You) Under My Skin exhibition, reports the BBC.

"It made sense to me to unveil this image for the first time in Germany, a country with a very relaxed attitude to nudity, where it is not automatically sexualised or deemed scandalous... It is a tribute to [Sienna's] courage and self-confidence that she agreed to sit for this." Said the artist, "I can think of many figures whose public currency in part revolves around their appearance, who would prefer to hide themselves away for nine months"

The exhibition seems to be all about the human body, and other paintings from the exhibition that can be seen on his website focus far more around cosmetic surgery. Sienna's natural form is in distinct contrast to much of the other work that will be on show in Berlin. Yeo found fame in satirical political portraits, notably a collage of George Bush made of clipping from pornographic magazines.

Sienna Miller Applauded For Standout Performance As Tippi Hedren In 'The Girl'

Sienna Miller Alfred Hitchcock

Sienna Miller has received mass praise for her role as 60's screen siren Tippi Hedren in the HBO special 'The Girl'.

'The Girl' will air on HBO this coming Saturday (Oct 20) and will follow the off-screen terrors that often plagued Hedren during her time working under Alfred Hitchchock. As well as Miller, the mini-movie also stars Toby Jones as the acclaimed directed Hitchcock and Imelda Staunton as his wife Alma Hitchcock.

The show has already been given the thumbs up by a handful of critics that have been given a first look at the new project, commending the impressive performances of the cast and the detailed portrayal of the difficult relationship that Hedren had to endure with Hitchcock.

Alfred Hitchock And Tippi Hedren's Torturous Relationship Unveiled In HBO's 'The Girl'

Sienna Miller Alfred Hitchcock Tippi Hedren Toby Jones Imelda Staunton Anthony Hopkins Helen Mirren

HBO’s The Girl tells the tale of Alfred Hitchcock’s relationship with the screen star Tippi Hedren - played by Sienna Miller. The story itself seems to be the real winner here; the TV movie explores the theory that Hitchcock (played by Toby Jones) “behaved like a psychotic lout” towards Tippi Hedren during the two films that they made together (The Birds and Marnie).

When Hedren spurns Hitchcock’s sexual advances, he uses his directorial power to torture her. When filming The Birds, he insists that she films take after take of the scenes in which she is attacked by birds. He does his best to break her spirit but ultimately, she remains strong and ultimately retains the upper hand.

New York Daily News have praised the feature, saying that Miller and Jones’ performances “keep the story alive and moving,” though Jones’ Hitchcock has but one dimension: “an arrogant egomaniac who was unpleasant to everyone around him.” Imelda Staunton is landed with the role of his unenviable wife, portrayed here as an “enabler” of his torrid behavior. The power of this disturbing story, according to chron.com is so fierce that you will be left feeling like you need to take a shower afterwards. According to their report though, Toby Jones’ performance is caricatured and lacking in authenticity.

Sienna Miller Talks Hitchcock Ahead Of 'The Girl'

Sienna Miller Alfred Hitchcock

Sienna Miller plays Tippi Hedren in 'The Girl' - a film that delves into the intricacies of the actress's relationship with Alfred Hitchcock. In an interview with Reuters, Sienna talks candidly about the subject matter of the film.

The film, which premieres this Saturday, October, 20 on U.S. cable channel HBO, tells the tale of how Hitchcock, played by Toby Jones, both launched and ceased Hedren's career, from her point of view. Asked whether Hitchcock did in fact ruin Hedren's acting career, Miller gives a brutally honest answer: "Well, she absolutely does feel that, because he did. She is at the same time very complimentary about him, and as a director no one is disputing the fact that he was incredible at what he does," she explained, whilst adding, "And also he taught her how to act and she is very indebted to him for that - to learn from the master. But yes, he was really responsible for damaging her career and of course there is resentment that comes with that." The 30-year-old Sienna boasts a strong acting CV, with appearances in gangster classics like Layer Cake, and action flick, G.I Joe, but this will be one of her biggest 'art-house' projects.

"I think his films will remain some of the greatest films ever made and he will always be heralded as one of the greatest directors of all time," said continued in the interview. "But often with geniuses, there is a kind of dark side and that is nothing new. I don't think it will have any profound effect on his legacy as a director or a filmmaker."
