Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint, singer Pixie Lott, Spice Girls star Geri Halliwell, Sir Ian MCKellen and David Hasselhoff were also among those who attended the bash at London's Grosvenor House hotel.

The recipients of the prizes included youngsters who have overcome difficult circumstances, charity fundraisers, community workers, and nurses who had travelled to West Africa to help victims of the Ebola epidemic.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who appeared via video link, praised all the nominees, saying, "Decency, selflessness, courage, these are the things Britain has always stood for, the things we represent around the world.

"The nominees tonight embody that British spirit. These are the people who've who have gone above and beyond - way beyond - the call of duty."

Soccer superstar Beckham said at the ceremony, "I think the Pride of Britain Awards is a very important night - there are so many heroes here tonight, and it's nice to be here to celebrate what they have done."
