Paul McCartney invited a man onstage so he could propose to his girlfriend.

The former Beatle was performing in Albany, New York, on Saturday night (05.07.14) when he noticed a couple holding up signs that read, ''He won't marry me 'til he meets you'' and ''I have the ring and I'm 64''.

According to local newspaper The Democrat & Chronicle, the 72-year-old rocker then invited the sign-holder, John Darn, up onto the stage where he proposed to his girlfriend Claudia Rodgers, who happily accepted.

Paul even invited John, 64, to sing part of The Beatles classic 'When I'm Sixty-Four' to the 13,000-strong crowd before joking that the couple had ''booked us for the wedding'' too.

Meanwhile, Paul is well on the road to recovery following a viral infection that forced him to cancel part of his 'Out There' tour.

His performance on Saturday was the first in nearly two months after the legendary singer was admitted to hospital in Tokyo for six nights to help fight the illness in May.

A source close to Paul previously admitted he was ''very sad'' about cancelling his Asian shows.

The insider said: ''Paul has really been through the mill. He was desperately sad he had to cancel those shows but he was really poorly. But he is on the mend which is great news.''
