Paul McCartney has been admitted to hospital in Japan as a result of being stricken by a viral infection that has caused severe diarrhoea and vomiting. Although the former Beatles star is expected to "make a full recovery", several Asian tour dates have already been cancelled to give the performer chance to recuperate.

His symptoms reportedly began not long after landing in Japan on the 15th May, causing the next few evening's worth of concerts to be scrapped due to the musician's poor health. Yesterday afternoon (22nd May), McCartney's spokesman Stuart Bell confirmed the reports that the 71-year-old had been taken to a Tokyo hospital earlier this week.

"Unfortunately my condition has not improved overnight," McCartney wrote after his initial problems. "I was really hoping that I'd be feeling better today. I'm so disappointed and sorry to be letting my fans down." Sankei Sports, a local Japanese newspaper, was the first to report on the singer's diarrhoeic condition; a personal detail that is not considered taboo in Japan.

All of the 'Queenie Eye' musician's remaining Asian tour dates have been postponed indefinitely but Paul will face a fresh wave of commitment in the USA from the 14th June when he is due to begin his 18-date stateside tour. This should give the performer enough time to shake off the virus but he'll want to be on his top form for his show at San Francisco's Candlestick Park Stadium; the last ever held at that venue.
